New years honours list

Barbara Windsor, why? I seriously think these are handed out to anyone lately if they are a little bit famous, apart from the fact I can't stand the woman, she has had a very chequered past and as far as I know has never done anything remotely praiseworthy.

I would rather honours were given to ordinary people who have done good works to worthy causes or something remarkable for others.

That's the whole point of the public being able to nominate people.

Did you make a nomination, either for this list or any others recently?

People from all walks of life are honoured. It isn't just for the rich and famous. But it relies on people being nominated.

This is guidance on how to nominate. It takes at least a year to work its way through the system, so if you did nominate someone within last 18 months or so, it might still be on its way.

No, I didn't, although I know some very nice people who are wonderful in my eyes I don't really know many people.

My point is what has BW done to warrant an honour, I just don't get it.

She does a lot of charity work doesn't she? She is also someone who probably falls into the 'national treasure' bracket (rightly or wrongly) so I don't think her being honoured is that much of a shocking thing.

YANBU OP. I also think that sometimes honours are just given to people who are rich, famous and successful and not those who genuinely deserve them. I didn't nominate anyone either but that doesn't mean that we can't have an opinion on who is deserving of them. The number of celebrities who have honours is just stupid IMO.

BW has devoted best part of 50 years to the British film and TV industry plus charity work.

Whatever you think about her, she deserves it IMO.

And DP just made a good point that if it hadn't been for acting professionals like BW, who supported the early days of Pinewood Studios Britain wouldnt have the film industy it enjoys today

If you read the full list of honours there are tons of people who you're unlikely to have of. "Ordinary" people do receive them but Sky isn't likely to report that Jean Maguire who has fostered for 35 years has received a CBE

I hate all honours with a passion - I hate the twaddle about 'ordinary people' ( how patronising) there's a real hierarchy with who gets what level of honour and with the odd exception, the lower your socio- economic status / social connections/donation to a political party, the lower will be your honour. The honours system is complete and utter rubbish and what's really sad is that so many think it actually matters.

One of the teachers from DD's primary school received an honour last year. she jolly well deserved it. She's also a lovely lady who has had to deal with a lot of personal problems in her life.

Maybe she has done a lot of charity work but I always remember her association with the Krays and the underworld and how she slept her way into fame and fortune and the sadness that came with it.

As far as famous people go I can think of other equally well known people who do far more for charity, and are generally nicer, but aren't on the list again. How do they choose who will be a Dame or a Lord?

as for BW, affairs, countless abortions, connections with the Krays, getting her baps on show..... a bit of charity work and shes the bees kness.

They give the celeb ones to divert from all the civil servants getting one at retirement for just doing their job.

I'd rather people like Barbra Windsor were honoured than civil servants, for whom "honours" are automatic despite their attractive salary and benefits packages: they get them for doing the jobs they are paid for - various sportsmen and celebrities tend (though not always) to have gone over and above their jobs - in BW's case, for doing charity work for decades.

The negatives about her that Becker mentions - those were all before I was born, and I am in my 40's: can no-one ever redeem themselves Hmm?
