New years honours list

Barbara Windsor, why? I seriously think these are handed out to anyone lately if they are a little bit famous, apart from the fact I can't stand the woman, she has had a very chequered past and as far as I know has never done anything remotely praiseworthy.

I would rather honours were given to ordinary people who have done good works to worthy causes or something remarkable for others.

Please explain to me what BW's abortions have got to do with her suitability for a damehood?

what Pirate just said!!

re what she has done:
Windsor began her career on stage in 1950 at the age of 13 and made her film debut in The Belles of St Trinian's (1954). She received a BAFTA Award nomination for the film Sparrows Can't Sing (1963), and a Tony Award nomination for the 1964 Broadway production of Oh, What A Lovely War!. In 1972, she starred opposite Vanessa Redgrave in the West End production of The Threepenny Opera. Between 1964 and 1974, she appeared in nine Carry On films, including Carry On Spying (1964), Carry On Doctor (1967), Carry On Camping (1969), Carry On Henry (1971) and Carry On Abroad (1972). She also co-presented the 1977 Carry On compilation That's Carry On!. Other film roles include A Study in Terror (1965), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), and as the voice of Dormouse in Alice in Wonderland (2010) and the upcoming Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).

her charity works

Windsor was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2000 New Year Honours. In August 2010, she was given the Freedom of the City of London,[28] and in November 2010, she was honoured by the City of Westminster at a tree planting and plaque ceremony.[29][30]

She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to charity and to entertainment.[31][32]

In 2012, she became a patron of the Amy Winehouse Foundation,[33] and in November 2014, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of East London.[34]

BW has devoted best part of 50 years to the British film and TV industry

that's called going to work

MrsJayy · 31/12/2015 11:43

We have Dame shirley Bassey sir cliff Richard they just sing songs meh i bet Babs is loving her damehood good for her .

Celticlassie · 31/12/2015 11:46

It's easy enough to put your name to a charity, but doesn't equate to the people who spend hours actually helping people, for little recognition and no reward.

And the Krays stuff wasn't just historical, she was at the funeral of whichever one died the most recently. (Not sure which one, I don't pay a lot of attention to violent criminals.)

VertigoNun · 31/12/2015 11:51

It's the criminal links that turn my stomach.

DrDreReturns · 31/12/2015 16:14

I think the honours system should be scrapped. It just seems increasingly corrupt as time goes by. A lot of them are, in reality, awarded due to donations or links to political parties.

MrsMook · 31/12/2015 16:21

Our previous County Commissioner for Girl Guiding has just been awarded one, and a brilliant job she did of it too.

ForalltheSaints · 31/12/2015 16:57

The one I really object to apart from Lynton Crosby is to give an award to the founder of a chain of sex shops.

BadgersNadgers · 31/12/2015 18:10

Someone I know has just been given an MBE. It is well deserved and we're all thrilled for him.

Dipankrispaneven · 31/12/2015 18:19

I agree, what sticks in my throat with BW is the criminal links. I'm also not too convinced by her giving her name to a few charities. I don't really care much about the whole honours thing, but if I were a Dame I suspect I might feel it had been a bit devalued.

hefzi · 31/12/2015 20:07

That little boy, Jonjo, has done an amazing job - I think it's terrific he's been awarded a BEM: what an inspiration it was to read his story in the papers this morning.

Janeymoo50 · 31/12/2015 21:53

Celia Hammond, what about making her a Dame. 18 hour days, 365 days a year, recusing stray cats, neutering them (her big focus) and rehoming them in south London. As far removed from her years as a top British model in the 60's as you can get. Cannot abide Barbara Windsor.

buckingfrolicks · 01/01/2016 00:30

Harvey Andrew McGrath. For services to economic growth and public life. (London)

Fuck me - don't know who this man is, but he's made a right mess of things if he's responsible for our economic growth and public life

PirateSmile · 01/01/2016 07:46

Regarding the poster who said BW has just 'gone to work' for 50 years I would point out that the world of theatre, film an. TV is exceptionally difficult to sustain as a career. Anybody who manages to keep going for half a venture has done incredibly well. Whether that in itself deserves a medal is a matter of opinion of course.

PirateSmile · 01/01/2016 07:47

Century not venture.

"I seriously think these are handed out to anyone"

I thought this a few years ago when they pretty much handed them out to everyone in the 2012 British Olympics team.

TheBestChocolateIsFree · 02/01/2016 20:13

That's a bloody brilliant idea Janey. Let's nominate Celia. Even if you're one of those people who moans about animal charities getting more than human charities (which I have some sympathy with), her work providing free neutering is unquestionably worthwhile, and her dedication is total. Has she really not had anything?

BeaufortBelle · 03/01/2016 13:24

Barbara Windsor isn't my cup of tea but I think she deserves it. She has done a lot, seen a lot and on the balance of probability has been a far more positive force than a negative one. She has cheered up a lot of people in her time. She had a bit of a link with the Krays - so did many people in their time - and yes they were violent criminals but they also came from a fairly ordinary East End family and they were violent in a criminal underworld. I can think of far worse and more dangerous criminals than the Krays and I am not in any way condoning their acts of violence of suggesting they were right but far more educated people than Barbara Windsor had truck with them.

Inkanta · 03/01/2016 21:57

No I don't feel comfortable with this whole honours list ritual. Doesn't feel right. I find myself looking at the people on the list and I'm confused and I'm thinking why??

Bloodybridget · 04/01/2016 16:02

buckingfrolicks I do know who Harvey McGrath is; he's pretty much solely responsible for the economic survival of a charity I'm involved with (I know that's not why he got the knighthood but I was v pleased to hear he got it).

gleam · 04/01/2016 16:15

Ego - thanks for that clip - I'd forgotten how good it was!
