to think 90p for 5 sprouts is daylight robbery

Went to local supermarket cafe and ordered a Christmas lunch for me. My sister wanted a serving of brussel spouts with a roll. I specified that the serving of veg should be separate. The food arrived without a separate serving of veg. We were told it was with the lunch as a normal serving is 5 and we had 10.
aibu to think this is a rip off.

She didn't make a sandwich. Had it with them but yes it is a little weird. She had aneroxia for many years and still has serious food issues.

For someone to purchase, store, prepare, cook and serve 5 sprouts on a fresh plate to you in their staffed, heated premises, no 90p is not a rip off.

5 sprouts is hardly a dish. They were tiny Happy to pay 90p if a proper serving but 5 seems stingy for a serving.

Any meal in a restaurant is going to cost a lot more than the sum of it's ingredients though.
You have to pay for staff, and gas/electricity for cooking, lighting and heating. Then there's cleaning. things like toilet rolls, cloths and cleaning materials. Washing up liquid etc etc etc. Everyone who comes through the door, and takes up a seat will have to contribute a fraction of all that expenditure.

The actual lunch was £5.00 for 7 items so pro rata they were pricy.

Sprouts come in all sizes though. These one were mini. A huge bowl of chips for £1.50 would have been better value.

Was a supermarket cafe. Could have just had a drink but had drink roll and veg so they hardly lost out.

I agree. I was coming on to say I'd bought 500g/1lb sprouts earlier for £1 and YWNBU, but now I've read you were eating in a restaurant I think that's pretty reasonable. A lot of restaurants charge £3-4 for a side serving of veg and I've had veg in places like Wagamamas where a 3 or 4 stems of that leggy broccoli stir-fried for £4.50 Shock 90p for a handful of sprouts sounds like a good deal to me.

But "just" a drink is probably the biggest mark up.
You're lucky to get a drink for under about £2.20 in a cafe, and the ingredients for a drink will generally have cost them under 20p - so you can hardly say a drink would have been better for you. Better for the cafe, yes.

It'd be a bargain if they were putting all that effort into cooking 5 sprouts, but presumably they cooked The Five alongside all the other little unnamed sprouts they were serving at no extra cost to themselves.

I wonder how the person who decided what to charge came to the conclusion that it was a fair price.

When you price it up, the mark up on a cup of tea is huge. Boiling water, a tea bag and a splash of milk and they charge over £1.

No RomCom, £4.50 for a few stems of manky broccoli is a bad deal for anyone choosing to be taken in by it.

It doesn't make the 90p a good one just because it's relatively less of a piss take Grin

Its not a restaurant though just a supermarket cafe. Ironically we did same in John Lewis and she got a huge bowl of veg for £1.00.
They didn't even follow our instructions and serve it separately. Maybe because 5 tiny sprouts on even a side plate would look ridiculous.
According to NHS serving size is 8.
But maybe I am being unrealistic.

Happy to pay 90p for a decent sized serving but main meal came with 2 veg so effectively £1.80 of the turkey meal was for veg. Don't think so.
It was thev orange one.
