to think 90p for 5 sprouts is daylight robbery

Went to local supermarket cafe and ordered a Christmas lunch for me. My sister wanted a serving of brussel spouts with a roll. I specified that the serving of veg should be separate. The food arrived without a separate serving of veg. We were told it was with the lunch as a normal serving is 5 and we had 10.
aibu to think this is a rip off.

And would you have paid the (presumably) £1.44 if they'd have given you the job lot of 8 northern?

Bloody hell, who the fuck could eat 8 sprouts though? Shock

Your stomach would be in turmoil.

northern78 · 20/12/2015 00:47

The price of a veg side is fixed at 90p. Normally she pays that a gets a fair amount of carrots . As they were doing Christmas lunches she thought she would get spouts instead. So fully expected to pay 90p.
Just expected a fair amount to be served on a separate dish as we specified.
This is where we go wrong though serving size. A serving of chips is a full pudding bowl full. Spouts 5.

Next time get peas and count them.

AgentZigzag · 20/12/2015 01:03

Hmmm I see what you mean.

They probably thought they were doing a kind deed then when they deliberately went against advice I've shamelessly misinterpreted as from the NHS?

Never in their wildest dreams thinking that anyone should/could manage more than, tops, 4 sprouts.

Did your sister eat them all in the end?

RomComPhooey · 20/12/2015 08:59

I don't order veg as a side in Wagamamas anymore, despite it really harshing my mellow when I have a food group missing from, or inadequately represented, on my plate. Lesson learned. Grin

RomComPhooey · 20/12/2015 09:00

I could definitely manage more than 5 sprouts. They're a Christmas treat as much as the tiny sausages.

northern78 · 20/12/2015 09:25

She had more than 5. I give her a few of mine as I had loads of carrots too. O and I also had a few stray peas on my plate. Not sure where they came from.

Hang on though, a supermarket isn't going to set it's serving size by NHS advice. It'll be worked out based on sprout stocks and profitability. In London, a serving of sprouts is usually three or four, so you did better than you would there!

Chips do have bigger portion sizes, but I think that's because they judge based on filling a bowl, and it's a fairly common side order on its own. Most people who order a side of veg will be adding it to a cooked meal, and therefore adding a serving spoon and of extra veg seems fair. The price is a bit of a red herring if you agreed to pay 90p for a serving without asking what a serving was, but I don't think it's bad.

tibbawyrots · 20/12/2015 09:37

Love sprouts so would definitely eat around 8+ with my dinner. That coupled with the cauliflower, swede, parsnips and cabbage does make for some after dinner music 😷

northern78 · 20/12/2015 12:56

Expected the serving size to be the same as the carrots she normally gets in the same cafe. Over double the sprout serving. On the plate the double serving of sprouts was actually smaller than the single serving of carrots. Hence why we believed thet forgot the extra serving.
Clearly sprouts are worth twice as much as carrots.

Or sprout serving spoon smaller than carrot one.

A restaurant/ cafe doesn't even have to accommodate your, rather strange request, for just a bowl of sprouts.

It's not on their menu so they could just say no.

90p for the meal your sister wanted is very reasonable.

Oysterbabe · 20/12/2015 13:04

I think 90p is pretty cheap tbh.

northern78 · 20/12/2015 13:11

I know it is strange but when you still have an eating disorder and are extremely fussy it is hard to find things to eat. They have always had servings of veg and chips on the menu (priced from x amount) but obviously don't normally have sprouts so I don't think it is that unusual. We meet there weekly since it opened so you would they would be used to it by now.
Anyway agree £1.40 for a lunch including roll isn't alot. But it is the stingly portion I still can get my head around. Or maybe she is just greedy to expect a similar sized portion to the carrots.

I cannot imagine how any restaurant or cafe could charge less than 90p for a side dish and make a profit. When you compare it to the price of a cup of tea it seems an absolute bargain to me.

Perhaps your thread title should have been "Aibu to think 5 small sprouts does not make a decent serving?"

northern78 · 20/12/2015 13:23

Probably worded it wrong. But all along I have said 90 is reasonable for a serving of veg but argued that 5 small sprouts doesn't equate in my greedy eyes to a serving.
