Currently pugs for example. seems wrong.

Any dog or cat with the pug type nose will have breathing issues

What exactly are you worried about?

Mutts are fashionable (by the name of whateverdoodles) surely mutts will be more robust than pedigrees?

Not the breathing so much but about what happens when they go 'out of fashion' I suppose - just seems a wrong way to choose a dog iyswim

The other big problem about a sudden popularity boom is the surge in irresponsible breeding from dogs without health tests by people who want to cash in and don't care about the dogs or their new owners. Lots of suffering all round.

Yanbu. Cute dogs ( pugs, Basset hounds, chihuahuas etc) and status dogs ( huskys, German shepherds, staffs) all come in and out of 'fashion' - for differing reasons, and in differing sections of society, but with the same outcome: an influx of the now unfashionable dog to the pound in three years time

How do you know their chosen because their fashionable? And by fashionable I taje it you mean because celebrities have them.

I know of two "celebrities" that have pugs, both now just over a year old
One chosen because he has three children so needed a dog that was good with children, and ful of energy yet as he works long hours was just as willing to settle and cuddle. He researched and researched, he even gave up a job that meant he'd spend many months out of the country.

Second brought with her brother, the parents of the celebrities partner own the dogs brother, again clearly researched. Their aware of how deep pressure is comforting to small dogs, never leave it for more than four hours. Their aware of pugs health problems breathing and weight.

both are thought of as almost children definitely part of the family. Wha t happens when they go out of fashion nothing dos well their family pets and you get attached to them celebrities aren't just going to go oh well I don't want the puppy I've loved for five years dos its breed isn't in fashion anymore.

I want a pug cross, not cos their cute or fashionable but because I love their personalities, I too have researched what I want and how suitable it would be for my circumstances.

They all look to me like an evolutionary nightmare.

And they're all pretty ugly.

If you want a pet you can carry around with you get a rat.

I am the proud owner of two beautiful Pugs Wilma and Arnie (collectively called the asbo Pugs) never got them because they are in 'fashion' They are sociable, inquisitive, in tip top condition, yes they breathe like 30 a day smokers and their farts can make a grown man cry and yes they do need a lot of attention, like making sure the folds in their little faces are cleaned regularly (they HATE it) But I got them from a very good breeder who is trying to breed out some of the problems.

Pugs are wonderful little dogs

When we were younger - Labs were cool because of the Andrex add - they are great dog but I doubt many people where we live research the breed properly - kids see a cute lab and that's what the parents buy. But there's a lot of negativity about poodle crossbreeds too - it always seems irrational.
I don't have either. But my dog is very cool and trendy anyway - because he's mine!

Mine will never be fashionable (saluki and a lurcher) .
Current fashion seems to be any mix of dog (I. E mongrel) jazzed up with a stupid name. The stupider the name the higher the price. Gumtree is full of these kind of puppies. What worries me is poor standards of care that bitch and pups receive from some 'breeders' out to make a fast buck.

Pugs were used as an example. There are others more deserving of concern. Tea cup dogs particularly tea cup Yorkies can't be healthy. I mean you'd be afraid to stand on them they're supposed to stay the size of a kitten for their whole lives. Something with so much personality, that loves to hare around outside shouldn't be bred that small.

I think breeders, I think £££££'s. The pedigree breeders aren't much better. You breed dogs to earn money - no other reason imo!

Mine is a complete rescue mix! She is about labrador height with telescopic legs, a barrel chest, thick neck,small head, brown short fur, and the sweetest expression in the universe. I have noticed though that where we live and go out dog walking, she is the only - erm mongrel... But she is 9 and is supremely healthy!

Wit I have such dog envy! I'm not fashionable in anyway whatsoever but I have been longing for a lurcher all my life - are they fabulous? I'd never heard of Salukis until my sister upped my cousin's whippet ante by saying she was going to get a Saluki. They are so so beautiful and silky and proud looking!

I have a mutt, but a street dog mutt so not a stylish animal but none the less a much loved one.

Gorgeous Knackered - the old ones are the best!

A friend of mine had a French Bulldog and what had been done to that dog by its breeders was absolutely inexcusable, it couldn't even walk properly. So many dogs are so badly bred they cannot function as dogs.

We had a crossbreed dog when I was growing up. (Rescue not a designer pooch.) My mum researched the characteristics of each breed before taking him on. Unless you are getting a complete mutt (heritage unknown) why would you not look at breed characteristics?

I have a chihuahua. I have her because I researched small to medium dogs to find what would be the best for us personality and characteristic wise.

If other people want to think I have her and chose her because she's a 'trendy dog' that's their prerogative.

We wouldn't be without her now and everyone in my family loves her. She's amazing with the kids, she's a very loving, loyal, affectionate, playful little thing, her poos are teeny which was a major advantage for me as I couldn't pick up huge ones, she's obviously a small dog and doesn't leave loads of hair or slobber everywhere and she doesn't make the place smell like a big dog can. So yeah, I'm very happy with my 'trendy dog'.

Oh and she never gets carried anywhere or treated like anything other than a dog and is happy to walk for miles with us.

The breeder who she came from actually says these are NOT teacup puppies, they are dogs not dinner sets and anyone asking will not be contacted back.

My pug is beautiful but not blessed in the brains department. She's high maintenance and high cost, just like me 😃

I have a deerhound x greyhound. He turns heads when we're out and we get a lot of comments but we didn't get him for a status. We chose a deerhound as they are very chilled, to the point he is horizontal! We just happened to come across a cross, which incidentely means he should have less medical troubles. He's 8 now, which is a fab age for a deerhound :) With no signs of slowing down!

Oh and exas he has MASSIVE poos! :)

I have an English bulldog. She breathes easily, she runs around the park for ages and she is full of energy.

Of course they are more prone to breathing problems but a good breeder can and do produce healthy bulldogs.

I have also met active adult pugs who can breathe fine, but perhaps that is a rarity.

Pugs have spinal deformities. That's how their tail is curled. It's fucking cruel to continue breeding animals that are almost always suffering and definitely have a reduced quality of life. Really depressing.
