not getting ds an xbox one for Xmas

He 14. Both dc recently got new laptops for their birthday on the understanding they wouldn't be getting another large price tag Xmas present.

Because of Black Friday he's been pestering again. He has a perfectly good xbox 360. I know that some of the new games and xbox live will only be supported by xbox one, so it's not an unreasonable request.

We can afford it, but I want him to save his Xmas money and look to be buying one next summer for his birthday, when we will put a fair chunk in ourselves. I don't like him thinking he can have everything on a plate.

Nope not mean at all. There is still plenty of life in an xbox 360 especially if it will be replaced next summer

Nope not at all. DS1 asked us for an Xbox One last year. I said no on the basis that he was 9 and had a 360. His Dad went and bought it for him, he's probably played on it 3/4 times this year. Utter pointlessness, and all he learned was that when Mum says no, ask Dad.

I'll go against the grain here...if I could afford it without getting into debt, I'd get him it, it's Christmas! As long as I knew he would be appreciative I'd do it without even thinking twice tbh...

In fact I did buy my Dc a ps4 today as one of their joint presents, they have a PS3 and other consoles but they wanted the ps4, it's shared, and I got a good deal

Absolutely not unreasonable at all. Its not just the cost of the console but replacing controllers (if you want more than one), headsets and games etc. You can get XBox live on XBox 360 though (unless its about to change).

Stand firm - I think you are right in teaching the value of things. When it does come to the time to upgrade have a look at what Game will give you as a trade in (for everything including games, controllers, kinect etc). They offered my son £100 cash or £150 vouchers so we sold it privately to a friend for £150 cash. He then used that and birthday money to buy a PS4 and one game. He is still existing on just the 2 games (although I'll get him another for Christmas). It does make my (14 year old) DS realise he can't just have what he wants when he wants it and the same as you we can afford it (if we wanted to!)

I swear I read that xbox one is backwards compatible with the 360? That'd be a good incentive to get one, however YANU to say no to it after shelling out for new laptops.

A new update to Xbox one software has allowed backward compatibility of some 360 games and others are to follow. I think the list is on the Xbox website

If his behaviour is good and he is generally appreciative and respectful i'd buy it but not tell him so it'd be a good surprise. He can pay for any extra bits and bobs for it with his Christmas money. He's 14, you don't have many years left of him not being an adult and not just handing him cash as you don't know what to get him.

There's some brilliant offers on the PS4 isn't there taper?! Managed to get my boys a PS4 with 3 games for the fraction of the cost of just the console!

Then again my DS is getting his as a birthday present on the 20th December. I ordered it today on Amazon where I got it for £229 with two games....cheapest I have ever seen it tbh.

He won't be getting anything too big for Xmas though as I just cannot afford it. Have only managed the birthday pressie with input from relatives, savings and an overdraft.

£40 off a 500gb and £50 off a 1TB at Tesco. Some better deals out there, but it ended up costing us £28 for 500gb + Fifa + COD III because of Clubcard points.

Why should I be ashamed Doreen? Those have either been gifts for birthday/christmas over the years (he is now 14) or he has saved and bought them himself. I think the fact that they are all still working shoes that he has taken care of his things. The wii and PS3 are technically half his brothers but tbh neither of them really play with them anymore unless they have friends round. The newer consoles aren't that great for group play plus the controllers are expensive so he doesn't have extra.

It's a waste of time him having a DSi if he has a 3DS. At least a regular DS or DSLite would also play Gameboy Advance games. Trade the DSi in or sell it at CashConverters.

DSS got a new Xbox 360 for his birthday last year then an Xbox Pne for Christmas. Apparently he's getting a gaming laptop this Christmas

I mean yes, teens can be tricky to buy for, but seriously there is just no need.

Sorry for the hijack but I'm really irrationally annoyed.

I've said that Badlad - he doesn't want to! Though I think now it may be the DSl he kept and traded the DSi he had.

I've also said he should trade/sell the PS3 and xbox360 - he says no. We've sold most of the wii games - he had one that sold for £40, at least £20 more that I paid for it. There are around 40 PS3 games but he doesn't want to get rid of them. A lot of his games are specific to particular platforms - he regrets getting rid of his PS2 as apparently he misses some of the games .

He behaves very well, is doing well in school and is polite and well mannered. Some would say spoilt but whilst he has a lot, he is not a brat.

I think the thing is that a lot of their social life is spent gaming with friends on-line. They can only play with their friends if they have the same console and the same game - if they change friendship group or a friend moves up to a new console or is on PC then they feel left out of the play. That's why they all end up with multiple consoles. If there was a way of them playing cross platform there wouldn't be an issue.
