I read a longer version to my 3 year old earlier this week and I'm really not sure about the poor Giant.

Giant is doing nothing wrong, Boy breaks into house and Wife hides him. He steals some Gold

Boy breaks into house again and steals golden goose

Boy breaks into house again and steals harp

Boy ends up chopping down tree and kills giant.

Poor Giant. :(

YANBU

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 12/11/2015 22:48

Thats why its brilliant!! Feel sorry for poor jack, ok that he steals from the rich. Lots of talking points.

OwlinaTree · 12/11/2015 22:48

The giant wants to eat him though. And he's got all that gold he's just counting, he should share his wealth.

Maybe it's a communist parable?

futureme · 12/11/2015 22:49

Giant only wants to eat him as he's broken into the house.... I still think the boy is morally dubious and te shouldnt be cheering at the Giants demise!

Ah but the 'proper' version, and by that I mean ladybird book explains that all the giants wealth was jacks father's. The giant stole from him and killed him. All about revenge, another lovely lesson to teach children...
Hmm

PaulAnkaTheDog · 12/11/2015 22:50

Yanbu.

FattyNinjaOwl · 12/11/2015 22:52

Jacks an arse. You forgot how instead if selling the cow for money so he could eat, he got magic beans. He completely ignored his mother, put his trust in a complete stranger and he lies, steals and murders the giant.

Cadenza1818 · 12/11/2015 22:56

Don't even get me started on goldilocks!

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/11/2015 22:57

Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhyme of Goldilocks is a much better version.

Pipbin · 12/11/2015 22:58

I agree. When I'm reading to my class we discuss if it's OK for Jack to steal. Same with Goldilocks, little sod.

ObiWanCannoli · 12/11/2015 22:59

Don't read Opies and Opies then.

futureme · 12/11/2015 23:04

I've never really liked Roald Dahl. So many just "mean" characters. I hated reading the twits at school. My daughter of course loves anything he's written!

Yanbu. I feel the same way about poor Rumpelstiltskin who gets royally ripped off by the Queen, who by the way has just married the greedy king who locked her up and threatened to kill her!

I also feel sorry for the fox and his mum getting boiled alive at the end of the Little Red Hen. What else are foxes supposed to eat?

NewLife4Me · 12/11/2015 23:14

obi

Opies and Opies?

My dd is currently working through LRRH Into The Woods.
wtf is that, bloody paedophilia.

futureme · 12/11/2015 23:15

I've not heard of Opies.

How has it taken me until my late 30s to question this!

I think, despite years on mn, its my first AIBU! I'm glad to hear I am not :D

OP posts:
NewLife4Me · 12/11/2015 23:17

I know about the researchers Opie and Opie, hoping it's something of theirs I've missed?

Obi, come back.

Bumbledumb · 12/11/2015 23:25

Giant only wants to eat him as he's broken into the house

Not quite; the giant wants to eat him because he can smell him and he likes to eat people. That's what ogres do.

futureme · 12/11/2015 23:27

Well yes - but he wouldn't smell him if he wasn't in his house!

SniffsandSneezes · 12/11/2015 23:30

If you want a really messed-up children's story, try this!!

ObiWanCannoli · 12/11/2015 23:34

Yeah Opie and Opie released a book of original fairytales they'd gathered. Jack is Cornish and not a nice chap. Kills a number of equally not nice Giants and breaks a magical spell. I remember something about a grandmother who could transform herself into a cat, I can't get the book as its in dds room (only one with book shelves in cupboards)

She is 8 I'm not letting her read it for another few years but she will read it when she's older. I think the prince in sleeping beauty is a violent cad. Not so nice the original versions but fascinating.

Definitely worth buying and reading, I loved the history of the original tales as much as the stories it gives them real meaning which we have sadly lost.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 12/11/2015 23:34

The little match girl is sad.

Fatmomma99 · 12/11/2015 23:55

You obvs need to read the late, great Terry Pratchett, particuly anything with Tiffany Aching.

GreatFuckability · 13/11/2015 00:41

Yeah. I've always kind of thought jack was a cunt who deserved eating. .

GreatFuckability · 13/11/2015 00:44

Unfairestofthemall · 13/11/2015 00:46

That's awful sniffs poor poor tatty! Why do people write these things?
