MN is such a tremendous source of info but sometimes it goes wonky. What's the worst/silliest advice you've seen?

OP posts:
BlueThursday · 24/10/2015 15:14

Yes she was a pain! I couldn't sit and have people think that you can simply walk off like that. They're the type who think debt a die with you and the like

Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2015 15:15

Yes I have AIBU completely hidden ssd. I did it quite a while ago because it was getting quite out of hand. I was wearing my eyebrows as a headband and thinking 'chinny reckon' permanently.

As I say though the AIBU threads still appear in Trending and I get curious which annoys me. Grin

FWR=Feminism Womens' Rights? i think.

greenhill · 24/10/2015 15:26

ssd feminism/ women's rights or fwr was the previous name of feminism chat.

Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2015 15:28

I think as Feminism has 'Chat' it could also have it's own 'AIBU'.

PerpendicularVincent · 24/10/2015 15:39

OP: I'm recovering from a c section last week, our baby isn't sleeping for more than an hour at a time and I'm exhausted looking after her and our toddler triplets. DH has just said he's going on a stag do to Las Vegas for a week and I cried, aibu?

Cue chorus of responses about how as the 'breadwinner' he deserves time off, and as long as the OP has a spa day afterwards it's all fine and dandy.

ssd · 24/10/2015 15:39

wearing your eyebrows as a headband, I like that Grin

greenhill · 24/10/2015 16:03

Phew Sparkling fwr has enough problems with trolls, de-railers, misogynists and invasions from men's activists groups as it is Sad

Poor MNHQ they'd need a member of staff permanently on the big red button and ban hammer Grin

It's safer to be a lurker rather than a poster in feminism chat. The regulars have a tough time of it.

Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2015 16:04

Does it greenhill? Oh dear. I will stick with it hidden.

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 24/10/2015 16:09

Can I just praise some advice? I posted not so long ago asking for help as I know fuck all about asthma and didn't know when it's OK to manage at home, when it's a trip to Dr's and when to hospital. My husband was being a dick and telling me I was over reacting and dc's 'squashed lungs' was due to them having been told off.

I got very calm measured advice from some wonderful posters, ignored DH and transpires dc was having an asthma 'exacerbation' and was put on steroids and antibiotics. I'll always be grateful to those posters for being calm and measured with their posts.

Fluffyears · 24/10/2015 16:22

OP: I have 24pence to last me a week.
Answer: can you borrow from friends/family?

Different OP: friend/relative wants to borrow money but I'm not sure if o should help.
Answer: lend the freeloading arse nothing you'll never see it again. Tell them to jog on.

wellliesandleaves · 24/10/2015 16:40

I hate the PIL threads where some respondents are obviously projecting their own issues onto the OP and saying things like 'fuck 'em, it's your child. Grandparents should just butt out' etc.

I remember that thread brokenhearted55a

amazing what pennies can buy. then again I know a few people who think that many more people could afford private schooling for their children but prefer to not save and put money away like they have done

saving 15/30k a year is easy once you know how Hmm

I have another Grin

OP: I'm having to rehome my dog for It's a devastating decision to come to and it's purely to give the dog the best quality of life in a wonderful new home.

Other Posters: I feel sorry for your children. What happens when you get bored of them.

millions of wee sad faces<
I can't sleep for worrying about dog. I'M CRYING NOW.

MerdeAlor · 24/10/2015 18:10

Latest silly one on health that turned into a bunfight, where poster was asking if she should have more time off because of a broken toe.

Answer? No, you must have Munchausens to have taken so much time off already.

Confused
greenhill · 24/10/2015 18:12

YY to misplaced sympathy and making it all about themselves. Support the OP or don't. I'd rather people didn't post than twist the knife like that.

A million years ago, when I first started posting, there was one poster that just went from thread to thread saying that they didn't understand what did the OP mean, many posters would explain, then that poster would return with similar questions, meanwhile the OP was completely ignored as posters were trying to explain ever more simple expressions to this de-railer. It was frustrating.

ComposHatComesBack · 24/10/2015 19:14

Multiple threads in which posters are told that if an item has the wrong price tag on it, the shop are legally obliged to sell it at that price - they're not. Also, people convinced that 'baby on board stickers are a valuable aid to the emergency services - they pay them no notice.

iminshock · 24/10/2015 19:23

when a poster has just been chucked/ assaulted/ lost their entire family in a house fire and someone comes along and tells them to drink some hot sweet tea.

penny13610 · 24/10/2015 19:27

iminshock sugar in tea! That is the worst advice I have seen on here.
You should use agave syrup or asbestos

ssd · 24/10/2015 19:29

or get a cleaner

iminshock · 24/10/2015 19:30

Penny Grin

Garrick · 24/10/2015 19:37

poster that just went from thread to thread saying that they didn't understand what did the OP mean, many posters would explain, then that poster would return ... the OP was completely ignored as posters were trying to explain ever more simple expressions to this de-railer

This happens all the time on FWR. Once in a while, I volunteer as 'explainer' so other people can get on with the topic ... but I've not done it for ages, as it's so damn wearing! I should really go and see who's suffering it now, maybe give them a hand. But I'm preferring to watch ridiculous CSI programmes at the moment Blush

posters are told that if an item has the wrong price tag on it, the shop are legally obliged to sell it at that price - they're not - Ooh! Invitation to treat! It's one of the only two things I remember from my law module.

greenhill · 24/10/2015 20:04

That does sound tiring Garrick there was a feminism for beginners thread ages ago, maybe that ought to be linked to when de-railers attack Smile

Senpai · 24/10/2015 20:21
