Dental treatment under sedation

I'm having this done soon and I'm terrified, aibu? Has anyone else had this done, was it ok?
Please share some experiences! I'm worrying myself sick
I went to my normal dentist about a month ago and made a complete fool of myself with my weeping and wailing, went back to work looking like Alice Cooper and spent the rest of the day traumatised, hence the referral for sedation

You have no idea what a treat you are in for!

I love having the iv sedation. They inject it into your hand/hook you up, you get that "couple of glasses of wine" (it's lovely ) feeling then boom, you wake up and it's all done, very little recollection of anything if at all. VERY groggy and out of it afterwards mind, have to be taken home and rest up that day but you should be fine the next day, I felt a tiny bit down the day after once but it was absolutely fine, went away in a day or so.

It's brilliant, I have everything done with it (very dental phobic), would never go back to no sedation.

Yes, I had my top wisdom teeth out as a teenager with what the dentist referred to as "the soothing needle" (aka, AFAIR, intravenous valium). Meant I was very very relaxed and slightly dozy during the procedure, my main memory is of lying in the recovery room thinking "that was FINE, why didn't I ask him to fix more things while he was in there?". Not distressing at all. What in particular are you terrified about, the sedation or the treatment?

Ohhhhh sedation is looooooovely.

I'm terrified, I have to take Valium to get through a simple check up, but mnmm sedation is good.

Unfortunately my NHS dentist is a real arsewipe who refused to send me for sedation despite me having several major panic attacks AND my GP ringing him to tell him to send me! So I have to pay a small fortune to go private (last lot cost me £600 for sedation and the treatments) But now its all done and I just pop a Valium for my check ups every 3 months.

Sedation is the only way I can have dental treatment. I'm terrified of dentists and needles but cope long enough for the injection (by cope I mean cry and shake) then I know nothing til after. My dentist is brilliant.

Oh this is so reassuring!!
I am completely overthinking it and had visions of being sedated but still in pain and not being able to say anything because I was so out of it
I need three lots of sedation and treatment and will cost approx £350
I thought that was reasonable?

I paid for 5 fillings, 3 wisdom teeth extractions, deep clean and of course the sedation. My teeth were far worse than I thought.

Honestly, sedation was amazing. Nervous before hand but I remember nothing of that day, not even the morning. Money well spent!

My Godmother is sedated each time she visits the dentist and always tells us she is seduced by the dentist. Told mine and he loved it.

Good luck OP, worth the money if it helps you. I'd be the one on the floor weeping and screaming at the sight of a needle.

I feel a lot calmer about it now
How long does it take to wear off afterwards? The dentist said it can take up to twenty four hours, can't really go into work still off my face!
I'm getting it done at 3p.m. so should I just go to bed after and sleep it off?

I had sedation recently for a tooth that had to be cut out and stitched up. I like you worried myself stupid about it.
I can honestly say it was amazing. The needle goes in and the next thing I knew was it was all over. No stress, no trauma...easy peasy.
I took a few hours for the 'drunk feeling' to wear off and I was very sleepy for the rest of the day.
I do find that missing time strange... You know you were awake ish but don't remember anything about it....I find that a bit odd. But it's not a distressing memory in any way.
Seriously don't worry about it.

I had all four wisdom teeth out under sedation - fabulous. It really did feel like I was downing wine when it went in, and apparently i just needed a bit of 'management' afterwards (talking rubbish and being silly) but I was totally fine by the next morning. Pretty much like being a bit pissed really.

I've never been sedated (do you mean general anaesthetic?) for dental treatment, but whenever I have it's taken a couple of days for me to get over it.

People do talk shite whilst they are sedated. Apparently some people have vivid sexual dreams as well. I've had it for an op on my foot, no such dreams but I might have talked bollocks.

No it's not general anaesthetic, it's like intravenous valium, can't remember the name of the drug dentist said they use but I know it begins with an m

Another one who has had it done and recommends it. Had a nasty, dead back tooth that had to be removed; after biting the original dentist and howling my head off I got referred to the local teaching hospital as could not afford to pay for sedation treatment. You can get it done for free if you are willing to let (very thoroughly supervised) students do the procedure.

dc2 had it too when he was 8yo.

They had a screen with a video for him above him so he could watch someting whilst they were putting the canular in.
He feel 'asleep' and 'woke up' with no pain at all.

Certainly much easier than trying to have that tooth out at the dentist!

Fwiw, dc2 is on the spectrum and usually extra sensitive to anything. If he was OK with it, I can promise you you will be too.

I went with a friend recently who is dental phobic. She had to have another adult with her. Taken quite seriously. I had to sign forms and stay on premises during treatment.

She did really well with it but took perhaps half hour to come round enough to walk safely to car. She slept for ages after she got home.

You'd best check this.

You have to have an adult to escort you, you can't drive for 24hr or sign legal documents after the procedure. If you don't have an escort, you can't have sedation. You should be looked after for the rest of the day and not have sole care of your children for example. Occasionally you can "re-sedate" yourself meaning that the effects come back, this isn't a huge issue as the point of sedation rather than GA is that you can hold your own airway open and breathe for yourself. It's an issue if you're in the bath tho or you've just put the grill on.

It's excellent for its amnesic effect OP meaning that even if the treatment is difficult, it won't add to your phobia. Maybe one day you could be weaned off it, we're pretty good at looking after our patients now.

I've had it done once and it was great! This was a few years ago and DH still laughs at some of the things I said! Apparently we had a 'row' about whether the door to the waiting room was push or pull... I sort of remember it (and I was right...). And I argued I was fine to get the bus. I was not fine to get the bus! I 'slept' in the car on the way home. Bits are familiar, other stuff I don't recall.

Having it done on Monday! I'm not dental phobic but my gag reflex is so awful they can't do anything without putting me under. DM is the same.
