Which shop do you think sells genuine sizes?

Having been a lot bit overweight for a really long time while I want to get motivated. I plan to choose an outfit to work towards wearing as a way of keeping me motivated. Which shop sells sizes that are genuine sizes? I know that M and S has a reputation for being too generous. I have no idea about NEXT anymore. Can anyone help? I had thought Monsoon but don't really know.

I find the supermarkets are pretty good these days. Sorry it's not a high end option but I know I can happily buy my size and it'll fit.

katemiddletonsothermum · 25/09/2015 22:55

There are no real sizes, I'm afraid. You'll have to try on lots of different sizes and see what suits you. ie, I can't wear Fat Face, the cut doesn't suit me, but Hobbs and White Stuff do.

Yesterday I went to Laura Ashley and bought some jeans in size 14 and capri pants in size 18. Where is the logic in that?

have a good shop, try on lots of clothes and try to remember that it's the manufacturers at fault, not you.

LoveAGoodRummage · 25/09/2015 22:57

None. I've developed a skill for knowing what size I am in most shops and where I can buy trousers and jeans in a cut which suit me.

spad · 25/09/2015 23:05

So there's no way of knowing what actual size you are? Well what if we were to look at it the other way, which shops sizes are on the small size? Anyone any opinions on that?

If anyone tells me Oasis size 12 jeans are on the large size, I'll strangle you with them Grin

I've never been able to wear Next bottoms and I've been from size 16 down to 12 in the last two years. Always tight on the waist and huge on hips and bums. I think they cut for the Pear shape.

spad · 25/09/2015 23:12

So where is the best place to buy jeans. Years ago I liked NEXT but lately they don't seem to have a good cut of any sorts. Any tips?

Pass. I ordered two lingerie sets. Both the same size and same brand. One pair of knickers fits perfectly (brand known for coming up small). The other pair two sizes too big Confused

Jeans from m&s. One pair perfect, the other a size too small, the grey pair a size too big. All the same style!

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 25/09/2015 23:15

Next boyfriend cut work for me and my fat arsed proportions.

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:15

None of the buggers

LoveAGoodRummage · 25/09/2015 23:16

Too big:
M&S
Next
Monsoon
Tesco
Oasis (sorry!)
Too small:
H&M
Karen Millen
Likes to toy with your mind:
New Look
French Connection
Sainsburys
River Island
Primark
What I would guess is right without trying:
Miss Selfridge
Top Shop

But this based on my body shape so wouldn't necessarily apply to all!

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:17

I vary in each store... M&S always the same the rest... Ugg I spent ages getting to a nice size for me and no bloody chance in some stores! Red, Next is the worse offender IMO plus doesn't fit my taller body... Either look like a hooker or a granny in their shirts ;)

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:18

Not listening to Love.... I'm happy with my M&S size ...

Lmao

jorahmormont · 25/09/2015 23:22

Primark comes up small. I'm a comfortable 18 in most shops but a 20 is a better fit in Primark for me.

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:27

Shhh love...

60sname · 25/09/2015 23:28

None. It's just a number.

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:29

Primark I struggle, but then am a curvy lady and really feel lots of places such as Primark seem to be made for the less curvy lady..

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:30

But wouldn't it be lovely 60 if we could be a size X and purchase in each every store! My DP is able to do this... Despite his addiction to Chinese

Gabilan · 25/09/2015 23:35

"which shops sizes are on the small size? Anyone any opinions on that?"

IME shops that sell mainly to teenagers, probably because they tend to be skinnier anyway. Although actually, now I think about it, I don't clothes shop much anymore so any info I have will be out of date Sad

rainpouringrainbows · 25/09/2015 23:36

none.

Buying clothes is a nightmare, they are all different and sizing are not even consistent within the same brand. To add to the circus, the "small/ regular/ tall" sizing vary considerably too.

I wear items going from size 8 (Oasis) to size 14/16 (Primark), with a jolly mix of regular/ tall 10 or 12 in between. H&M is either super small or gigantic...

Apparently, it is supposed to make us feel good and buy more. I am not convinced.

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:38

Teenager shops definitely the worst offenders. Stop messing with us just get the sizing right!!

I can only buy top shop jeans very long legs and have to buy a size larger!

Lurkedforever1 · 25/09/2015 23:38

They're all vanity sized, just some more than others. And no matter what your size clothes shopping is a pain in the arse. On the whole I'd say places stocking more catwalk knock off ranges come closest, so the likes of tkmaxx, some of the ranges in big department stores etc. But that does depend on your style.

ChilliAndMint · 25/09/2015 23:38

There are no standard sizes anymore. I mainly use charity shops ,and any thing " vintage" ( gosh I hate that word) is tiny for it's size ( by modern standards anyway)

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 25/09/2015 23:39

Teenager shops are for ladies who haven't had kids and therefore have no hips

Justgetknitting · 25/09/2015 23:41

Same for me lunch, but always had the curves
