To say there's nothing wrong with shopping at Aldi/Lidl?

Hi all,

I went round an aunts of mine today and thought I'd bring her some of the (Aldi ingredients) homemade cake I made. The opinion was that it was really yummy but she saw my Aldi reusable bag (those up notch material ones with the handles) and said "Oh, you shop at Aldi then? You sure you're okay financially babe?" (This was in a dead serious, concerned tone).

I was really taken aback! Yes, I'm doing absolutely fine financially. Why does it matter where I do my weekly shop? If anything I've more money.

AIBU to think "live within your means" comes to mind with this aunt? I love her to bits, but she is solely reliant on benefits and I can't see how she's in the position to be commenting on my finances.

I switch between Aldi (some Lidl) for the weekly shop, and M&S for my treats/sweets. I think the quality is lovely in Aldi and I don't have an issue.

I didn't make any harsh comments to my aunt, just smiled genuinely and said "you should give it a go, I'll even give you a lift one evening and we'll go together". She had a face of thunder and said "well I like my Tesco thanks" and walked off into the lounge!

Why do people have such high prejudices against these places? I find it quite humorous that she was concerned for my finances by a bloody Aldi bag.

Might I add she does most clothes shopping in Primark and all my presents as a child were Primark jarmies, year after year

Ha at thinking Tesco is the Better quality. Ignore her, she's a bit of a snob sounds like it.

Exactly OneDay. I avoid Tesco like the plague when it comes to fruit/veg, (nice diet plan milkshakes though).

There are snobs at every level of society. You just happen to be related to one.

The irony. Look at the advert that popped up at the bottom of this thread. Maybe they feel threatened by Aldi's popularity!?

I agree with the last poster: no-one on mn is going to say you're unreasonable shopping at Lidl/Aldi.

I bought the Lidl Balsen lookey-likey biscuits the other day. It was the first time I'd bought them. My goodness, they're good.

Lidl rules, I just got 4 bottles of champagne for £32! And yes proper champagne, not cava / prosecco.

Leave her to Tesco so Aldi/Lidl don't get too busy for the rest of us

I've only been shopping for the past three weeks in Aldi and I'm already a convert. In fact I resent going in Tesco now, everything I want to buy seems so bloody expensive!

One thing that shocks me with Lidl is the prices of their outdoors/home things. I saw some silly little books at £3.99 each, I was shocked as that's a huge amount compared to the pricing of their groceries.

Some People who don't have a lot can be really touchy about keeping up appearsnces. They are often the ones who would never dream if buying second hand or borrowing clothes etc. if you are financially comfortable, it can be easier to not give a fuck what others think. Obviously this only applies to "some" and maybe your aunt.

I've seen ferraris and Masseratis at our local aldi, they obviously don't care.

Did a weekly shop in aldi today - in and out in under an hour and spent £38, that'll do me fine thanks.
Neighbour saw we shop at aldi and her response was 'I couldnt shop there I wouldn't want my kids to go without and don't see why they should' I asked what she meant and turns out daily meals are made up of anything by captain birdseye and mccain with a pre made side salad. She couldn't believe dp and I find frozen chips boring and don't buy them haha - came out with 'but what do you eat WITH your meals????'

Our local Tesco is horrible, it's humongous. The little Tesco express shops are ok. I like smaller stores now with less choice.

Main point: lidl is the best shop ever. My weekly shop is never above £30. Good quality items. And I can spend extra on their middle aisle goodies without feeling guilty.

We spent a long time shopping at Aldi then tried a Sainsburys online shop. The price difference was insane! We tend to get Asda delivery or Aldi. Aldi does some great bargains

i agree with Bambambini. I choose to shop in Lidl and Aldi sometimes but it IS a choice and I get a little thrill out of my savings but if I HAD to and felt embarrassed about being really skint ( no reason to, most of us have been at some point and could be again) then perhaps I wouldn't be so happy to admit it.
I hate Tesco though

Aldi/lidl are amazing. I would never go back to Saintsbury's or the ilk as it costs twice the price and is no better quality.

I have a big family, and by shopping at Aldi/Lidl, we can afford other things as well. Our weekly shop is usually around £100, but I buy a LOT of fruit and veg for the gluttons children. I try to buy their organic bits when I can, just to encourage them to sell more of it.

I don't see why I should pay £40+ more on my weekly shop just for a label.

Urgh, tesco shudder, would rather shop in aldi or lidl any day.

The only thing I buy in a 'regular' supermarket is Dolmio sweet pepper stir in sauce for DS2. I so love shopping in Aldi/Lidl, in and out quickly, great stuff and great prices. Seriously, what's not to love?

I couldn't take anyone who thought that Tesco was better than Aldi or Lidl seriously TBH. Shit quality and overpriced.

I just wish we had an Aldo round here!
