To say there's nothing wrong with shopping at Aldi/Lidl?

Hi all,

I went round an aunts of mine today and thought I'd bring her some of the (Aldi ingredients) homemade cake I made. The opinion was that it was really yummy but she saw my Aldi reusable bag (those up notch material ones with the handles) and said "Oh, you shop at Aldi then? You sure you're okay financially babe?" (This was in a dead serious, concerned tone).

I was really taken aback! Yes, I'm doing absolutely fine financially. Why does it matter where I do my weekly shop? If anything I've more money.

AIBU to think "live within your means" comes to mind with this aunt? I love her to bits, but she is solely reliant on benefits and I can't see how she's in the position to be commenting on my finances.

I switch between Aldi (some Lidl) for the weekly shop, and M&S for my treats/sweets. I think the quality is lovely in Aldi and I don't have an issue.

I didn't make any harsh comments to my aunt, just smiled genuinely and said "you should give it a go, I'll even give you a lift one evening and we'll go together". She had a face of thunder and said "well I like my Tesco thanks" and walked off into the lounge!

Why do people have such high prejudices against these places? I find it quite humorous that she was concerned for my finances by a bloody Aldi bag.

Might I add she does most clothes shopping in Primark and all my presents as a child were Primark jarmies, year after year Grin

Aldo
Aldi!

penny13610 · 06/09/2015 19:36

No self service machines, bloody wonderful.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/09/2015 19:41

I wish I could see ferraris at aldi. ds has an eye spy car book and I have spent an hour yesterday and an hour today wandering round the posh area of town looking for bloody cars killing time while we wait for dd at rehearsals and my feet bloody hurt

WorktoLive · 06/09/2015 19:42

I saw a Maserati at Aldi last week Grin

Rhine · 06/09/2015 19:45

Aldi are brilliant, our local one is always packed. I don't think I've ever been in there and it's not been busy actually, I thought that the days when people looked down their noses at Aldi and Lidl were long gone?

penny13610 · 06/09/2015 19:46

So did I Work Hmm

randomsabreuse · 06/09/2015 19:49

Some things at Aldi are better than Tesco. I shop there as it's 5 minutes walk rather than a drive and most of the stuff is nicer. Especially the dauphinoise potatoes and the chocolate brioches!

WoodleyPixie · 06/09/2015 19:49

Lady at the Bracknell Aldi, regularly gets out of her range rover with her fortnum and masons reusable bags.

Makes me giggle every time I see her.

I love aldi though even though we have a lidl two minutes from home, I don't find it as bargainous as aldi.

Topseyt · 06/09/2015 20:28

I love the new Aldi that has opened near us. I've been shopping there for about the last six weeks now and the price difference between there and Tesco (the only other realistic alternative round here) is massive. The quality remains good too.

I hardly ever go into Tesco now. It really has become far too expensive.

I also love the lack of self-service machines. I don't miss that shout of "unexpected item in the bagging area" at all.

The only thing I very slightly miss about Tesco is the scan and pack system that is in both of our local stores. Not enough to make me go back there on a regular basis though.

Aldi all the way for now. There isn't a convenient Lidl, or I would give that a try too.

Topseyt · 06/09/2015 20:30

Oh, and I do see a number of very posh cars parked outside Aldi. Top of the range Range Rovers etc.

Topseyt · 06/09/2015 20:31

..... and my daughter pointed out an Aston Martin a couple of weeks ago in the Aldi car park.

LidlSoph · 06/09/2015 21:17

I can third seeing lots of posh cars! I myself drive a 2007 Ford Fiesta ;) I'm cool you know Grin

I am currently on holiday in the Med. There are loads of fancy little artisan shops selling honey, chutneys, posh choc etc. All we keep on saying is "hmm it's not as good as Aldi though is it". Blush

SixtyFootDoll · 06/09/2015 21:23

I nipped into lidl to pick up lunch. Focaccia trooped with goats cheese and tomato for 69p and a pack of Serrano ham for 99p.
Pretty posh I reckon.

I have no time for faux snobs.
Lidl far nicer than trashy tesco.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 06/09/2015 21:30

Lidl dont have twin trollies near here!!
Really missing a huge market.

LidlSoph · 06/09/2015 22:09

I've tried those Focaccia things in their fresh bakery, possibly the nicest bit of pastry I've ever tasted.

Sallyhassle, give the store an email! Their customer service is fab and I'm sure they'd take that into consideration.

I wish we had Aldi.....

"Especially the dauphinoise potatoes and the chocolate brioches!"

There is a hashtag waiting to happen here, I am convinced of it.

JaceLancs · 06/09/2015 22:44

I'm going against the grain here as I can't ever seem to find all that I want at either aldi or lidl
Sometimes it doesn't seem that cheap (morrisons saver range often beats on price) range is quite limited and I find the shelf life poor for fruit and veg
I shop anywhere where I can get a bargain
Sometimes local markets, or farm shops, I'm not a fan of tesco or Asda, always max out on the reduced counter
I buy cupboard stuff at bargain or pound shops (when cheaper)
For 3 of us (DS 22, DD 23 and myself) try to stick to under £40 a week

JaceLancs · 06/09/2015 22:46

Forgot to say that includes 2 cats all cleaning products and feeding DP 2/3 times a week!

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 06/09/2015 22:54

Aldi & Lidyl are fantastic. I am a lapsed vegetarian and so only buy freerange / outdoor reared meat to ease my conscience. I can get a BIG freerange chicken (fresh, with a long shelf life) for under a fiver (can get two dinners out of that) as well as outdoor reared pork and a leg of lamb (fresh, British lamb, not NZ) for just a bit more, six pound-ish (again, two dinners from that). Their fruit and veg is lovely, and so so cheap too. Also, they sell goats cheese and pandana for a couple of quid. Oh, and one of them sells frozen lobster tails in a twin pack (can't remember which) for about a fiver. Bloody amazing! Love them both.

Should also mention all Waitrose pork is outdoor reared, even the basic range (bacon, sausages as well as joints, chops) and surprisingly cheap actually.

imwithspud · 06/09/2015 22:54

Nope, nothing wrong with shopping at Aldi at all. A family member has recently started shopping there and is amazed at the price difference in comparison to Tesco.

I also like Sainsbury's, have been doing online shops there recently but mainly because we had vouchers for free delivery and £10 off so it's worked out roughly the same or cheaper than an Aldi shop.

BrandNewAndImproved · 06/09/2015 23:02

I like aldi but fresh fruit like nectarines are mouldy in a couple of days.

I work by one and do a couple of £10/15 shops a week there.

Nikitasol · 06/09/2015 23:12

My two year says 'Aldi' out loud to strangers. We go in there A LOT! I don't mind really, but I was thinking I could also train him to say Waitrose too depending on who I'm with at the time!

Flashbangandgone · 06/09/2015 23:30

Many people (maybe we all do) need to feel they're superior to others... For the op's aunt, shopping at tesco (not exactly Waitrose) over those who shop at Aldi allows her to feel superior, albeit rather pathetically so.
