to ask when they go from a cot to a bed?

DS (1) is in a 60x120 cot. He is already 80cm and only just turned 1. he seems to get stuck sideways and not a lot of room head to toe.

So when do they go into a bed?

Our dd went from cot to cot bed (as in we took the sides off) at around 2. She was cosleeping until then in the cot bumped up against our bed.

At 2 we lowered it to the lowest setting, took the sides off and put her in her own room. She had a bed guard for a while but was fine.

Now she's almost 3 and in a big girls single bed because she's so bloody tall and won't part with the mountain of stuffed animals that take up half the bed

IME it varies greatly. Generally, the only "rules" I am aware of is that you should move them at the point they can climb out or when they get too long.

Personally, I would also recommend moving dc1 out of the cot several months before you need it for dc2.

With us, ds1 was 2 precisely and ds2 2.5. I wouldn't worry too much about the "getting stuck" - he'll learn not to do that or how to unstick himself pretty quickly .

mine were in beds at 20 months and 19 months.

dd1 was moved from an ikea cot to a cot bed at a yr as the cot was just too small.

never had a problem with the transfer either. Both loved the bed and a duvet

He has gone straight into the bottom bunk of bunkbeds and he'll get top bunk when DC2 is old enough for bed (still only a wee baby at the mo so we're a while off)

Mine were all about 18 months as they all hated their cot. Just went straight to a big bed with one side against the wall and were instantly more content at bedtime. I used the bed for naps during the day to get them used to it.

Ds was 12 months and dd was 18 months. They both could climb out at those ages so we put them in a bed.

My nephew is 2.5 and still in his.

DS is very nearly 3. He still sleeps in an average sized cot. Never once has he tried to climb out and sleeps soundly every night in there. We are not looking to buy a bed for at least another 6 months.

If they are still comfortable and safe then no need to change.

I think DS was almost 2, he was almost throwing himself out of his cot.
He had a cot bed, so we had one side against the wall & a bed guard on the other side.
DD is 16 months and not far off getting her leg cocked over the edge

i was in the 'as long as possible as they are caged contained in the cot so its safer. none of them came out of their cots before they were 2.5, and ds was in his til he was 3.5 as he loved it and cried when i tried to buy him a bed

My ds is still in a cotbed and he's 2 and a half. As he had never tried to climb out we have just left the sides on. We are on holidays at the minute and he slept in a proper bed (double) beside his sister the other night and didn't fall out so think we might try taking the sides off when we get home although I'm in no hurry.

When they work out how to leapfrog over the bars and you find them fast asleep spreadeagle on the floor in the morning. Exact timing depends on individuals skills in escaping from their growbag for easy leg-over-bars action.

DS1 was in a bed not long after his first birthday and it was great because he was the kind of kid who just liked his story, kiss, cuddle and sleep.

DS2 is 22 months and still in the cot. We need the bars! He likes to hold them and bounce, then roll about the bed, and I honestly believe it would be a nightmare to give him the freedom of a bed just yet. In fact, he's in there right now singing and bouncing quite happily.

I think you just do what suits you and your family best.

DS started climbing out of his at about 18 months. Got him a bed then.

When they start trying to climb out of the cot, or in DS's case, break it!

DS was 11 & 1/2 months, he started walking at 10months, a month and a half later he was a scarily proficient climber and was out and over the top head first, we then decided we better get him a bed. Funnily enough it then took him until he was four and in a foreign country to fall out of bed.
DNephew stayed in his cot til he was nearly 3 as he didn't want to leave it and it was big enough for him.
Different kids will need different approaches

Thanks for all your advice. As mentioned DS is long but as Ihateigglepiggle mentioned, my DS also hangs on and bounces up and down so maybe not worth giving him the freedom just yet. He is into everything and perhaps not the best idea for a bed yet.

My ds is still in his Ikea cot at 2.5 he has never tried to climb out yet so I think it will be another few months at least.

Mine went from a crib as babies to a cot bed, they never had a cot. Our cot bed has a drop side though which makes life easier.

We took the sides off DS's bed when he was 2. Had a few nights where he fell out but none since. Bought him a big bed just before he turned 3 as we needed the cot bed for dc.2

We're getting dd a bed for her birthday/Christmas present. She'll be 2 in December. She's escaped once, but that was pure good luck of kicking the cot bar that wasn't hooked on properly

Ds1 was just 1. We got him ikea toddler bed so it was low, put a gate on his room. It helped we did it in winter si it was nice and dark so he was reluctant to get out of bed

Ds got a big boy bed for his 3rd birthday (toddler bed at that!)
He was happy in his little ikea cot and his room was pretty small.

He fitted in the toddler bed until he got a cabin bed for his 9th birthday.

He is probably quite unusual!

Depends on size/weight/behaviour of the child, other baby needing the cot,
How many times you want to put them back in bed...

We kept the cot built and told ds if he didn't sleep in his big bed without messing, he would have to go back in the çot.

I can't be doing with all this drink/wee/another story/noise/light all through the night!

There's no rule, just do whatever works for you. I have a friend who never had a cot, coslept to 18 months then stuck a double mattress on the floor in the kids room so she could still feed him to sleep and then make her escape and he wouldn't have far to fall out of bed. If you do mattress on floor it's a good idea to buy a set of replacement bed slats to roll out underneath it so the air still circulates.

My eldest went into her big girl bed at 2 and still doesn't get out of it once we've put her to bed now she's five, she sits in bed and calls out if something's wrong. I'm keeping my youngest in a cot as long as possible because I think she's going to be a nightmare when she can get out of bed herself.

Ds 1 was 2. He moved into a big boy bed the week after his birthday (ds2 needed the cot).
Ds 2 was 14 months. He kept waking himself up by getting himself stuck sideways.

Maybe move to a cot bed as they're bigger - mine is about 140 by 70cm I think.

We took the bars off and converted it to toddler bed just before DS turned 2 as he's a climber and it wasn't safe any more. He loved moving to his bed and stayed in it when he was asleep, although we did have to put a gate on his room to stop him escaping during bedtime routine.

Mine both did at about 18 months - I prefer it as they can get out of bed and play in their room in the morning instead of calling out to me first thing. Neither managed to climb out of their cots.
