to ask when they go from a cot to a bed?

DS (1) is in a 60x120 cot. He is already 80cm and only just turned 1. he seems to get stuck sideways and not a lot of room head to toe.

So when do they go into a bed?

DD went straight into a single bed at 14 months.
DS1 was 2. We moved house a week after his birthday and he refused to get in the cot in the new house.
DS2 was about 22 months. He climbed out once at 10 months but never did it again.
DS3 was 2.9. He started climbing out.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 02/09/2015 10:05

Dd was nearly three, she could climb in herself but never tried to get out (although I'm sure she could do it but she never did) in the end we took the sides down and moved her to a new single bed all in the space of 4months because I became pregnant and as she was so attached to her cot we wanted her to have as long as possible to forget about it before giving it to the new baby.

Roomba · 02/09/2015 10:18

DS1 went into a bed at around 18m. He was tall, was trying to climb out of the cot, but at least would stay put in bed all night until we went through to him in the morning.

DS2 was 3.1! But he isn't as tall, didn't climb, and (the crucial bit) didn't really spend much time in his cot either without screaming to come in my bed.

MardyBra · 02/09/2015 10:20

Why the hell is this in Aibu?

cjt110 · 02/09/2015 10:38

Good suggestion Hero Thanks Smile I wonder if we can take off the side of his cot as he gets a bit bigger. He seems too much of a baby to be in a bed tho!

mardy because thats where I posted it

DD2 is almost 3 1/2 and is still in a cot (just a normal 120cm x 60cm one, not a cot bed or anything bigger).

She's very petite, and likes to sleep curled up like a little cat up the top end of the cot (where the pillow would be if she had one). She's never tried to climb out and is perfectly happy. We do have a bed for her, we recently bought a high sleeper bed for DS so she's having his old one. But it's not built yet.

Also, for as long as she sleeps in a cot we can all stay in one room in a Premier Inn (we have three children)! On their website it implies that 'children' in beds are classed as age 2 and above, but if she sleeps in a cot at home she needs a cot in a hotel.

DisappointedOne · 02/09/2015 10:48

DD vaulted out of her (vintage) cot in her grobag in the dark at 17 months. She went into her bed the following week. It's quite high and has a truckle bed underneath, which we pulled out just in case she fell out.

suzyrut · 02/09/2015 10:58

DD2 was in a the same sized cot to your ds and I moved her out at 14 months because she kept bashing her head and arms on the bars (she is a wriggly sleeper). We bought a toddler sized bed (one of the ikea metal ones which have higher side bits iyswim). She didn't have a problem rolling out and has slept a lot better with extra manoeuvring space, though she can and still does go for a bit of a night time wander occasionally.

cjt110 · 02/09/2015 11:16

Suzy I'll give that a google. He is a wriggly sleeper too although he doesnt seem to be phased by it. Wonder if the basic wooden ikea ones 9a bit like this one) which have a bedguard on one side would be a good idea - although I'd be worried he might try and clamber on it and hurt himself.

My Ds came out of his cot at 9 months as he started climbing up and leaping out,
after the second time we put a mattress on the floor for him and bought him a bed that weekend,
he didn't start to walk until he was 12 months but his climbing skills were scary.

cjt110 · 02/09/2015 11:49

Ohhhh decisions decisions. No idea when to move him. As I said he's long and wriggly but it doesnt seem to bother him. He stands up and bounces up and down as if it were a trampoline but no signs of him climbing out (yet). It's about his shoulder height atm. He's cruising but not walking yet.

Definitely when they can climb out. They seem to think it's a game Angry

Lj8893 · 02/09/2015 11:51

Dd went into a toddler bed with a bed guard at 20 months. No problems whatsoever, although it will be a while till we take the guard off!

Cockbollocks · 02/09/2015 12:00

DD was 18 months, she had started to pile up anything she could find in order to climb out. We changed her cotbed into a bed.

She then refused to sleep in the bed because it wasn't "a real bed" like her brothers. We then had to buy a proper single bed - she looked like a teeny tiny dot in it!!!

goblinhat · 02/09/2015 12:11

No rules.

My babies never used a cot, slept in our bed until they were 3 or 4 years old.

MummyPig24 · 02/09/2015 13:30

Dc1 was about 2.9. He really didn't want to move out of his cot and it was a nightmare.

Dc2 was 21 months, she kept getting stuck and hitting the cot sides and slept a lot better in a bed.

Dc3 is 18 months and is staying caged for the foreseeable future!

CityDweller · 02/09/2015 14:45

DD (2.5) loooooves her cot bed in a serious way. It's like her little nest - cosy duvet and pillow plus about a billion stuffed animals and books and winde-up toys and whatever else she takes into bed with her She often refuses to get out of it when she wakes up after a nap/ in the morning. Unfortunate, as DC2 is coming along in about a month and it would be easier/ cheaper to have moved DD into a bed and have the cot bed ready for DC2 instead of having to buy another one...

suzyrut · 02/09/2015 15:16

Hi OP. It was this oneish (I think they've changed the side bits slightly):
www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S29123958/. Quite girly but they do wooden alternatives and bed guards.

MrsFrankRicard · 02/09/2015 17:06

At the later end of the scale - just turned 3, it was a cot bed and plenty big enough, he slept like a dream in it and we were reluctant to rock the boat.

TerrifiedMothertobe · 02/09/2015 22:19

As with most of thing depends on child.

Ds1 was out of cot and into a cot bed by 20 months and then into full size single bed at 24 months. Has slept in a kingside (stupid I know) since he was 3.

Ds2 however will remain caged in his cot until I have to move him. He's a climber and a bad settler at night (although sleeps in) so I don't care how long he stays In a Cot.... Or sleeping bags! I want sleep. (Ds1 is a chronic early riser, every second counts! )

dimdommilpot · 02/09/2015 22:52

DD1 went from cot to bed after she chucked herself over the bars in a paddy and broke her elbow... she was almost 3. DD2 is 16month and im not sure when we will take her sides off.

elQuintoConyo · 02/09/2015 23:20

Ditto goblinhat

DS went into a full-sized single bed about 3 weeks ago, he is 3.8yo. We co-slept before. He took to it like a dream . We had built his room up to be his special place, put some of his Picassos paintings up, bigged it up etc, but hadn't mentioned, "oh, and you're sleeping in here from now on, mate". He is a strong character and we thought we were going to have no end of problems... wee monkey, never ceases to surprise me.

anklebitersmum · 03/09/2015 00:52

All four of mine were in a single bed by just over twlve months old, because, like yours, they were hanging out of the sides of their cots.

They were more than capable of climbing in and out of a single bed safely and we put a stairgate on the outside of the bedroom door so that there weren't any escapees post bedtime Wink

We used a bedguard to stop them rolling out accidently for the first few months and by 18months or so had removed that too. We did the big cuddle, hide outside the door and gentle return to keep them in bed at bedtime and by day 2 they were in & snoring within minutes.

No dramas and none of the tantrums a lot of friends had when they moved them post 18 months old.

var123 · 03/09/2015 03:45

We had a cot and a cot-bed. The cot-bed was longer and wider than the cot and the sides were removable. The children moved out of the cot when they were at risk of climbing over the rail and falling - so at about 18 months.

Then DS1 moved into a single bed when DS2 needed the cot bed. Ds2 stayed in the cot bed, at first with the sides on and then, later, with the sides removed, until he was almost 5.

We spent good money on lots of things that were useless (moses basket, baby bjorn carrier , etc) but that cot bed was incredibly good value for money in the end.
