To think my 19 year old saving money is odd

My ds saves a large amount of money each month. He earns around around 1000 pounds per months and saves about 200 pounds per month and gives me 200 for keep. All of my friends children at his age seem to out enjoying themselves and spending most of the money they earn.

Be thankful.

I have a saver and a spender. The saver has caused me far least angst.

Sounds like a sensible lad, I am sure he can still enjoy himself with £600 in his pocket every month. Is he saving for something special? First car, house, round the world trip. My kids have saved for all those at some point or another and still managed to enjoy themselves.

Well he still has £600 disposable income then doesn't he? Which is £575 a month more than me.

Yabu-it's quite normal for young people to save & he should be encouraged & applauded for it. (although what is he spending the balance on?-he should be saving more imho)

Uh, seriously? If I had a teenager who was regularly saving money I'd be over the moon. I wanted to save when I was 19 but as I was being paid about £2.50 per hour it was nearly impossible.

Well done to him. It will do him well in the years to come. I'm surprised he's only saving £200! Maybe he's using he rest to enjoy himself

My kids have always saved. that's probably due to them all living at home and paying no digs I have a lot of admiration for a 19 year old being able to save and pay digs given today's bloody awful wages they're normally paid. He sounds a very financially are young man.

You have a lovely son who is mature beyond his years. Yabu to worry. If even im blessed with just one child i wish my child will be like your ds at his age. Well done for being a good parents. (Personally if i didnt need his rent money id give that to him in lump sum..having put money in cash isa...for him when he moves out and buys house or flat)

I think he sounds very wise. I hope my children grow up with his attitude to money, ie not wasting it on nights out like i did.

I was a saver too. I paid 100 rent pm to my parents and saved almost all my income in order to save for a house deposit. I allowed myself 100 per month to fritter away on clothes and socialising

You should advise him to start a pension too.

When I left school I was earning £35 a week on a training scheme. Out of that I gave my dad money and saved the rest. When I got married I had a fair bit saved and my dh had nothing. Over the years my savings have been waisted baling him out. I hope that my ds take after me and not their father.

Even with his salary that he keeps he spends on other people. He just doesn't seem to ever treat himself.

Sounds good! Like Hellion I was a saver and therefore own most of my home outright in my now mid twentie , I would hope that my children will also be savers has judging by pp it seems less hassle!

Sounds great to me. I am always surprised that people expect their children to be like them.
