To think my 19 year old saving money is odd

My ds saves a large amount of money each month. He earns around around 1000 pounds per months and saves about 200 pounds per month and gives me 200 for keep. All of my friends children at his age seem to out enjoying themselves and spending most of the money they earn.

Why is this odd? He still has a LOT of disposable income left. I started saving when I started working at 18. By 21 I had put down a 10% deposit on a house. Best thing I ever did, and hoping to be mortgage free by 40.

cowssheephens · 15/08/2015 22:21

Good on him I say.

At 16 I worked about 60 hrs a week. Saved nearly every penny, whilst still living at home. At 18 bought a house and paid off the morgage within 11 years. Maybe I didn't travel, nice holidays etc but can enjoy now with the DCs

rainbowunicorn · 15/08/2015 22:23

What a very strange question from the OP why on earth would anyone think that saving money is odd Confused

Aeroflotgirl · 15/08/2015 22:25

Good for him, he sounds very sensible. My dh paid off the mortgage off his £75k home by the time he was 30 by saving.

tvlover1234 · 15/08/2015 22:25

It's not strange. I'm 20 and my boyfriend is 19. We've just bought our first house together. You should be proud that they are managing their finances.

Bifflepants · 15/08/2015 22:26

My 18 year old is managing to save money from her student loan! She has been out once in 8 months. It's so weird and I do worry a bit, but she seems perfectly happy.

budgiegirl · 15/08/2015 22:26

Don't knock it, OP, most parents would give their eye teeth to have a teenager who saves. He still sea to have enough to go out and enjoy himself too.

Whathaveilost · 15/08/2015 22:31

DS doesn't earn anywhere near that amount but save half of his wage and spends half. What he doesn't spend one week he will save.
He has a long term savings plan and a shortened and also has stated a pension last year. He is 18. Most of his spends go on his car though!

BestZebbie · 15/08/2015 22:35

If he is spending £600 a month he is spending most of his money - and way more than most 19 year olds will be able to - so I don't think you need to worry that he is a miser... (assuming that there aren't other large bills in that such as paying his own uni fees etc)
If anything, he should probably be saving a much higher percentage of his income while you are subsidising his accommodation costs.

FreeCoffee · 15/08/2015 22:40

It's good he is saving but he is hardly going short if he has £600 a month to spend.

I suppose it depends on what other expenses he has such as travel costs.

All my DC are savers. I don't think it's unusual.

laffymeal · 15/08/2015 23:04

I was like that which is how I could afford a 3 bedroomed home in Edinburgh aged 24.

Cabrinha · 15/08/2015 23:18

Why is it odd?
Loads if people save.
He's an adult FFS!
I saved at 19. It wasn't something for people to coo "oh isn't she sensible" over. It was because I was a grown woman capable of managing my money.

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 15/08/2015 23:29

You'd rather he didn't save? Get into debt?

I saved, I now own a house because of it. YABU.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/08/2015 23:43

I was a saver at 19 then blew the lot on an unsavoury boyfriend, cannabis and partying at 20

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2015 23:48

Dd has always saved her money she isnt stingy but she is very good with budgeting she is paying off her car early because she has put money aside,
would you rather your son pissed his money up a wall? I think its great they are able to save and budget

TheHormonalHooker · 15/08/2015 23:52

I've got an 18 yo and 20yo who are savers.

DS1 is in the Army. Before he joined up he had a weekend job in a shop, but saved most of his wages. Through the first 6 months of army training he saved almost all of his wages. He bought an 07 plate 3 Series BMW outright in January. He is continuing to save.

DS2 has had a NMW weekend job for a couple of years, he's done extra hours in the holidays etc. He saved up and bought himself a car last Summer. He's got about £2k saved for uni. He's really frugal. If someone asks him to do something and it's expensive he'll say "do you know how many hours I have to work to earn that much money?" Grin

I'm glad they save and are careful. Hopefully they'll stay that way.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 15/08/2015 23:57

Meh. At 16 I used to itemise my out goings and income meticulously and save a tiny bit each week. It's a great habit and if he's going out and has friends then it's all good. Making hay while the sun shines. If he moves out then he'll need that money.

redshoeblueshoe · 16/08/2015 00:09

OP its great he saves. Do you spend £150 a week on yourself ? That seems a lot to me.

PennyPants · 16/08/2015 00:17

I was like that. Bought a house at 24. He is beginning to set himself for the future. Not an odd thing at all.

BlankSpaceBaby7 · 16/08/2015 00:22

Good on him!
