To paint my DS toe nails blue?

DS is 6
he has asked if I can paint his toe nails blue - I have blue nail polish so could do this
However he wears sandals in the summer - am I setting him up to be laughed at? It would only be during the holiday time and completely removed before school started. Or should I do it and then wipe it off after a day or so?

This is mumsnet, he is a boy, therefore should have pink nail varnish. Pink sparkly even better.

sometimes as parents we need to are children that something is ridiculous for the sake of their wellbeing

It's temporary, it can easily be wiped off. Same as wash out hair dye, temporary tattoos etc - no reason why he shouldn't be allowed. Would you let a 6 yr old girl paint her toenails in the holidays?

No one has ever laughed at my DCs painted nails, or under pants worn over trousers super-hero style.

He did get get some smiles though.

Do you actually have blue nail varnish? I wouldn't buy any, I'd offer what ever colour I had.

I'd do it. If he changes his mind it's very easy to remove. Is rather different from dyeing hair where reversing it is rather more difficult.

My DS painted his own toenails pink and his finger nails dark blue. I care not one bit what other people think.

No one will notice and if they do. Well, do you really care?

My DS used to have his painted up until about age five as he had an older sister.

Goths have painted finger nails, is it a big deal?

It only has meaning if you place meaning on it!
If it makes you feel any better my DS loved orange and yellow so blue is getting off lightly! It is not the same as colouring his hair.

My son (he's 5) has green toenails pretty much all the time and has done since he was about three. He says they're his dinosaur claws. No one has ever so much as commented on it, to my knowledge. He's quite quirky though and people are used to him being unconventional!

I doubt a bit of nail varnish will adversely effect his wellbeing. Lots of rocker type boys paint their nails.

It's compulsory I would say. On Mumsnet. Just don't do it to a girl, in case it makes them into a girl, or something.

Go for it ! But please use a Base coat. I've learnt the hard way- was in a rush to go out so quickly painted my toes with a dark navy blue without a vase coat. 2 weeks later and 2 different types of nail polish remover and I still have a bluish tint to my nails!

Ds asked for his nails to be painted last summer (aged 5). I've suggested painting them this summer (he's biting nails & I thought it may help breal habit) but he doesn't want to because "other children will tease him".
If dc wants to, why not? I don't think it's same as dyeing hair (other than a v temp spray in/comb out one) as dyes usually contain some pretty harsh ingredients & can damage natural hair.

My 6 year old DS has blue painted toe nails and loves them! His big sister is always painting his nails and he has never been teased.

As I painted DSs thumb nails bright red I have no issue with it. I bought myself some George at asda gellies varnish which looks like jelly and smells like it too. DD wanted to try it so I did her nails, and DS wanted to join in. I would have done all his nails but eczema to a few of his fingers stopped me. He loves his jelly thumbs.

My 6yo has had blue toenails for much of the last two months.

He also took it upon himself to have his fingernails painted bright glittery blue at the school fair.

He doesn't give a flying one what other kids say. I admire that about him :)

I wouldn't have an issue with it, and wouldn't expect other people to either.

I have a 15 yr old cousin who's VERY quirky in his tastes (think tweeds, top hat and cane) but he'd drop-dead gorgeous, so he gets away with it.

Boy or girl I'm surprised at so many people who paint their child's nails!

I wasn't allowed to do it, or wear make up, until a lot older than 5 or 6!

Are little girls wearing make up that young too?

My three year old son attended a wedding with sparkly silver nail polish on finger and toenails this weekend. He spent most of the time on the bouncy castle (wedding was in a field) with a bunch of slightly feral eight to eleven year old boys who don't appear to have batted an eyelid.

My ds, nearly 5, is always asking me to do this (in whatever colour I have available). I always oblige. Though I always have the same inward dilemma as you op! No harm ever comes to him, I figured if he was unhappy with comments from others then he wouldn't ask. He genuinely carries on along his own happy go lucky path being scrummily happy.
