Chicken drumsticks - AIBU

BBQ today (sun currently shining) and forgot to get the chicken drumsticks out of the freezer last night. DH says you can't cook chicken pieces from frozen. I say thats ridiculous and that if you can cook chicken nuggets or preformed chicken from frozen, surely you can cook chicken drumsticks from frozen? We aren't rowing about it and this isn't some huge debate but maybe I'm wrong?

What's the consensus? Do I need to nip to Sainsbury's to buy fresh ones? If it helps I was going to cook them in the oven first and finish them straight away on the BBQ.

Definitely need fresh, it's a recipe for food poisoning to barbecue frozen chicken. The stuff you can cook from frozen is already part cooked I believe.

No, you can't cook chicken drum sticks from frozen. Fresh chicken is different from reconstituted chicken and if you don't want to give your guests food poisoning, I'd nip to the supermarket.

I wouldn't cook from frozen. If it is frozen too much chance of it not cooking through properly.

Your DH is correct - it's a recipe for food poisoning. And definitely don't defrost them in the microwave!

What time is your bbq? If this evening, they will be defrosted by then anyway. Otherwise, defrost in microwave, cook in oven or microwave and finish on bbq.

Why would you not defrost them in the microwave anon?! That's exactly what the defrost setting on a microwave is for!

I am not an expert but I hAve one of those thermometers that you can stick in meat and see the temp in the middle. I always cook meat until it's way over 70degs.

I think you'll have to cook it on low for a long time until done. Can you not defrost in a microwave?

I also cook all my sausages and chicken first in the oven and crisp up on the bbq, it avoids black burnt outside and under cooked in the middle. I'm petrified of giving anyone food poisoning and also hate burnt food.

Don't put frozen ones directly on the bbq but if they are out now they should mostly defrost by later. Then finish off defrosting in microwave. Then cook in oven then bbq.

Defrost them in the microwave, I do it all the time and it's never caused any problems.

Defrost in microwave, I always do this as I forget to get enough chicken.

They are fine done this way and you've got time.

Just get some fresh ones. Food poisoning is not a risk you want to take, trust me. Chicken nuggets etc are usually made with cooked meat so it is just a matter of heating, not cooking.

DON'T cook from frozen !! They need to be thoroughly defrosted first. Why don't you use the defrost function on your microwave?

I won't use microwave to defrost meat because it's so uneven, you end up with some bits cooked and some still frozen and you don't catch it in the 3 second optimal window of opportunity and turn it every 12 seconds, whilst whispering secret ancient Celtic words

Defrost them in the microwave.

Roast them in the oven.

Finish on the BBQ.

I put chicken in a bowl of water to defrost.
Can't cook whole pieces from frozen, they will not cook in the centre.

Well there you go, I'm glad I checked. Fresh ones it is. I don't have a microwave and the BBQ is at 1, there are 40 drumsticks so it would take an age splitting it all down to defrost anyway. Oh well, we will have to have another BBQ in the week...and I'll remember to get them out of the freezer this time.

I forget that other people have a microwave with a defrost function. Sorry! Constantly having to stop DP "defrosting" meat by just generally microwaving it

I know it's too late for today but next time you can seal them in a bag and defrost in room temp water. Change the water every hour or so and drumsticks should be defrosted in a couple of hours. As long as they're fully defrosted before they go in the oven they'll be fine.

I regularly cook chicken drumsticks from frozen (weekly in fact) and have never got food poisoning. Just make sure they are cooked through (they obviously take a bit longer from frozen!)

Why is it a recipe for food poisoning?

You can get bbq flavour drumsticks from Lidl which are meant to be cooked from frozen so what's the difference?

Yeah, we occasionally by KFC-style drumsticks as a treat and they can be cooked from frozen. What's the difference?
