To still cook this chicken ?

Morning

Well I had a small chicken in tray out to defrost last night. Its one of those boneless one's that takes 50 minutes so not a huge whole chicken.

Anyway looks like one of my cats in the night pulled it down and bit through top of the covering ,, none has been eaten and its in fridge now, defrosted.

It will be ok to thoroughly wash in cold water , cook and eat won't it ? Hope so as its all I have in for Sunday Roast , Sigh

Oh so not to drip feed , None of the chicken itself was on the floor though floor is clean but it is intact in its foil tray,

Yes but next time put in the microwave so your cat can't get it, if you dont have a microwave then your oven

I know of a well respected countryside hotel where the resident labs managed to get hold of one of Sunday joints and drag it around the garden. It was washed off and cooked - nobody complained (tbf - only the chef and hotel manager knew...).

I think you'll be fine. The cooking will kill any germs. FWIW - it's likely to be covered in all sorts of germs and bacteria anyway as slaughter of living creatures isn't exactly a clean process.

Sorry-knee jerk reaction. But I wouldn't eat something that had been left out all night and a cat had chewed through the packaging. Especially considering the hot weather.

Never wash chicken, it spreads germs everywhere. If the cat has just bitten the packaging, and not got to the chicken, it should be fine, you'l kill any germs cooling it.

teacher .. I got it out late last night due to the weather as took the heat into account . If my camera on phone was working I would upload it . It is a small tear/bite on the covering not the chicken.

I wouldn't eat chicken that has been left out all night considering how hot it has been. Levels of possible bacteria would be too high for even cooking to eliminate them all. Possible cat germs wouldn't really bother me though. And you should never wash chicken. Bin it.

Yea that;s what I thought pourmeanotherglass . Only other option is to get two fillets out that are wrapped up in freezer, stick them in microwave to defrost (naturally as no defrost option on my microwave) and have them instead but no idea if they will feed 3 of us

Why should chicken not be washed ? Genuine question . We often have had chicken over the years and my Mum always washed them under cold tap.

It was frozen when left out. OP stated it was left out to defrost. It's not likely to be a breeding ground for bacteria as it will have spent most of the night in a deep chilled state.

As for not washing chicken - that advice is a result of lack of understanding basic kitchen hygiene - washing chicken under running water, splashing water in surrounding areas, perhaps smearing chicken on taps and then not cleaning up properly before preparing other food - not because washing will harm the chicken.

I think it will be fine. The cooking will kill any germs if there were any in the first place. I wouldn't wash it with cold water though, that really does spread bacteria.

I'd cook and eat it.

It spreads the bacteria everywhere, there have been many (sometimes heated) threads on this very subject.

Never wash chicken or rinse mince.

Bit Hmm at the advice to keep a slowly defrosting bird in the microwave - doesn't that contaminate the microwave rather?

Cleaning a microwave has to be one of the worst jobs ever. You could just cover it with something or defrost it in the fridge.
