To still cook this chicken ?

Morning

Well I had a small chicken in tray out to defrost last night. Its one of those boneless one's that takes 50 minutes so not a huge whole chicken.

Anyway looks like one of my cats in the night pulled it down and bit through top of the covering ,, none has been eaten and its in fridge now, defrosted.

It will be ok to thoroughly wash in cold water , cook and eat won't it ? Hope so as its all I have in for Sunday Roast , Sigh

Washing chicken splashes food poisoning bacteria everywhere, increasing risk of transfer onto something that goes in your mouth. Washing doesn't come close to cleaning the chicken of bacteria so is completely pointless especially as adequate cooking will kill the germs anyway.

If cat chicken doesn't smell bad it will be fine to eat.

Charley50 · 05/07/2015 09:10

Rinse mince?! Never heard of that one! Do people do that?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 05/07/2015 09:15

I'd eat itGrin

RachelRagged · 05/07/2015 09:15

Ah I see, thank you LionRichie.

Yea it smells just fine ,, not even sure if cat got to the meat itself.

sophie I think the microwave advice was just a cat proof place to defrost not actually turning microwave on...

RachelRagged · 05/07/2015 17:55

Correct Crosbybeach.

Well I cooked it (bit longer than it said), ate it and feel fine . However NEXT time meat will be put in microwave to thaw out .

Chuck away the chicken and eat the cat. Two birds, one stone.

WhetherOrNot · 05/07/2015 18:15

What lethal infection do you think your cat has that can kill you through biting a chicken........but can't kill you through nuzzling and licking you?

stairbears · 05/07/2015 19:03

You're meant to defrost things in the fridge, aren't you? The outside of the chicken will defrost faster Than the inside, in room temp. After 2 hours it'll be full of bacteria...

Tuskerfull · 05/07/2015 19:06

I ignored food hygiene rules earlier in the week and was up all night on the loo, vomiting into the bath (which thankfully is beside the loo, or the cleanup would have been a lot nastier). My stomach says don't risk it!

ASettlerOfCatan · 05/07/2015 19:17

Personally I never defrost chicken outside of a fridge. It's the worst meat for food poisoning issues.

TheCatsMother99 · 05/07/2015 19:49

As someone who has had salmonella poisoning (from a very well known chicken restaurant), I wouldn't risk it. Nor would I wash chicken or defrost it anywhere other than in the fridge.

Salmonella poisoning isn't fun and apparently if you've ever caught it you're more likely to be affected again Confused

alrayyan · 05/07/2015 20:03

Is the cat ok? hopefully not got salmonella. The disgusted crew would have enjoyed my house earlier. My other half actually grabbed his cooked chicken breast out the the cats mouth and ate it. Shock

SophieJenkins · 05/07/2015 20:09

No I understand that Crosby. I meant, if it is defrosting in there it will leak contaminated fluid all over the microwave so when you next use the microwave, it will be contaminated with raw chicken fluid/bacteria.

Nice! Glad you are Ok OP.

Goshthatsspicy · 05/07/2015 20:14

The cat wouldn't get salmonella Confused they eat all kinds of crap.
I hope you won't wash your chicken anymore op

alrayyan · 05/07/2015 21:25

gosh, clever and patronising on sooo many levels.

SophieJenkins · 05/07/2015 21:34

Who are you talking about?

WanderWomble · 05/07/2015 22:21

Put it on a plate/shallow bowl in the microwave so any fluid is contained.

Happfeet2911 · 05/07/2015 22:46

Don't wash it just roast it, the temperature will kill anything lurking! Besides we all need a bit of bacteria!!

TheHumanSatsuma · 05/07/2015 23:01

Cook it!

WhatsTheT · 05/07/2015 23:14

You can wash a chicken, just make sure you fill a tub of water then place chicken in. The advice is due to people running taps over chicken then wondering why they have the shits (chicken water splashing all over things).
But what's the point? washing it won't kill any germs, cooking it probably will though.

Cat nibbling on a bit of packaging on the top wouldn't bother me, you are cooking it anyway, god knows where all this meat is before it gets to us.

The only thing that would bother me is leaving chicken out at room temp all night. I'll admit, I do it in the day every now and again but usually to quick-defrost some wings, but not large pieces. If anything out of the whole situation that's what will harm you.
