To think this is beyond negligence?

I know we all make mistakes but come on, how can you leave a baby unattended in the sea for even a minute? Don't know where this family are from but I hope somebody finds them and has a stern word?

There had to be more to the story. that just wouldn't have happened in the way reported.

It's a Daily Mail story - only the 10% that makes it sensational will have been told.

I saw this story too and was really cross about it. Inflatables are pool toys and should not be in the sea.

A 10 month old should not be in the sea on an inflatable for any reason short of abandoning some other vessel.

It's not just in the mail, it's all over the place including a video of the baby being rescued.

If the parents hadn't forgotten they had a 10 month old child then what? They just put their baby in a floaty, popped her in the sea then walked away?

It's madness and doesn't make any sense.

It's a dm article, of course there is more to it!

For a start they are trying to make it sound like the family let the child get 1km away from land before they did anything. That's just not true. She was rescued 1 km away but as I think most people know, currently and tides can rapidly sweep people out to sea, which is one of the dangers of the seaside.

Now, if they'd have written a sensible article about how quickly these situations get out of control, and the dangers of inflatables, that would have been great.

But true to form they preferred to make it into a negligent mother story without the facts to back it up.

It might be the daily mail but there are clear pictures of this baby being left unattended drifting far away and having to be rescued by the coast guards.

It is very strange.

Strange to stick your baby on one of those things in the sea. And strange tlo forget they were there.

There's got to be more to this, surely?

Just bad journalism I suspect. Story picked-up, through a non-English language paper, they purchased the pictures and made-up some copy to go with the photos.

Fills column inches, parents are "foreign" so not likely to object, and readers happy with a human interest story that can leave them smug that they are better parents.

All sorts of likely scenarios could have lead to this. Mother in water with 2 children, 1 DC urgently needs her attention, drops grasp of other child momentarily, strong current drags baby away. Unable to pursue safely with other child. We all like to think this sort of thing couldn't possibly happen to us, but it does everyday, we all make a poor judgement sometimes.

What possible explanation could there be that wouldn't indicate negligence?
If a baby is in a floatation device in the sea, then there is no excuse to let go of them for a second.

Why is everyone so resistant to the idea that maybe the parents were negligent?

I once almost drowned as my mum let me go in the sea when there were warning signs up even though i couldn't swim. I was about five.

I've seen a toddler floating out away from the beach on a pool toy. I just managed to reach the string because I was far enough into the sea, but I only looked round because I thought I heard a small voice saying "help".

When I found her parents each thought she was with the other parent. This was in the UK and a British family.

I know we all think that no one would use a pool toy in the sea or leave a child unattended but unfortunately it does happen. Some people just don't think anything will go wrong, some shouldn't be left in charge of children. I don't know which it is in this case.

Thank god for those people who rescued her!

NEVER put your child in the sea until they can swim! And then only horizontal by the shore while there with them (currents).

If it's true that others (not parents) raised the alarm with the coast guard, that seems to indicate the parents were negligent. Tides can carry inflatables out very quickly, but people supervising would notice!

I wouldn't have a ten month old in the sea unless I knew I could supervise, and I would guess everyone on here woul feel the same

Yes people are that stupid, I don't see why it's so difficult to believe the parents were negligent. Parents are negligent every day...fact!

Paula, the important part of your post is the words "If it's true". I really wouldn't take it that anything in that story is true other than the bear fact that the baby drifted away in a current and was rescued.

My niece rescued a two year old in a dingy on Scarborough beach two years old when she was 13 ( she's a junior lifeguard) as she noticed what no other adult including the parents the dingy being pulled out to sea.

If happens fairy regularly.

I believe they were negligent.

it'd the forgotten bit that makes me a bit Hmm

they'd surely have had to go into the sea themselves to get the baby far enough in to be able to be swept away.

they'd have need cold and wet themselves and had to take shoes off etc.

how could you be cold and wet and bare foot and not know why

I've seen this story in many places not just the mail. Why people on here totally dismiss things because the mail is one news source running the story is just utterly bizzare. Don't like the mail? Find the story elsewhere then see if you think it's a load of crap

I was going to post this yesterday but forgot. I'm hoping they assumed the baby was being held by someone and didn't just paddle out of the water leaving her behind. Hmm

The embarrassment/worry is written all over that mums face.

The video has just been on BBC breakfast must be true it's the beeb It definitely happened and it was an inflatable crib. The parents forgot they put her in. She was 1 km our and rescued by a feckin boat. Unbelievable Shock
