To have said this to the girl?

I live in a ground floor flat and do the odd bit of shopping online. We both work shifts, as do the people in the other ground floor flat, and I have an 11 month old DD who naps twice during the day.

So this morning the buzzer went for a delivery (expected, but didn't know what time) as DH and DD were both asleep. I jumped up instantly, then it went again. And again, and again, then it was pressed and held and held. I had to scoop DD up, who was wide awake by this stage. When I got to the door there was a girl aged maybe 8 or 9 holding my parcel. A woman who I presume was her mum was in the van.

As she was young instead of saying what I was feeling (I was pretty pissed off) I smiled and said 'you only need to press the buzzer once, there's people sleeping'. I genuinely said it nicely. Then the woman yelled from the van 'well she didn't know that did she?' I said 'no and that's why I told her nicely'. The woman twisted her face and gave me a proper dirty look. The girl looked unperturbed. I'm pissed off. WIBU?

What time was it?

YANBU to feel annoyed but I wouldn't have said anything. She was very young. Not much point tell her after the event. Was the woman from a delivery company?

Not at all unreasonable and I would probably complain about the driver/mother to be honest. Very unprofessional. I understand she was probably in a lack of childcare situation but she still has to do her job and not be rude!

Just before 10am. I presume it was Yodel, they're self employed I think. Surely 8 is old enough to know how to ring a doorbell especially if you're out making deliveries?

I would complain to the delivery company. The woman should not be using her child to make deliveries.

This is the problem with child labour, kids are completely incompetent!

Actually YANBU - holding down a buzzer repeatedly is quite irritating and the adult was lucky you were polite. I'm not condoning coming out blustering or shouting but I have seen it happen and it could have been quite upsetting for the child. Could you call the parcel company with feedback?

YWNBU. Even reading that made me feel irritated. Hopefully you taught the girl something, even if the mother is beyond help.

I've sent my dd round to neighbours houses with parcels and always told her to only know once and come back.if no answer. 8 is perfectly old enough to understand

I don't see the problem. With the kid being out with the mother. I used to go in my dad's van all they time. It was fun.

Regardless of sleeping, nobody should be pressing the buzzer like that so YANBU to say something as her mother clearly wasn't teaching her basic etiquette.

Just before 10am is perfectly reasonable. Don't shop online if you are inconvenienced by home deliveries.

YANBU although plenty of people will tell you, you shouldn't have politely said that to a child. God knows why, it's like they're all precious snowflakes who must never be spoken to unless you're giddy with happiness.

Also, there's nothing wrong imo with a child helping their parent as long as they do it properly and she clearly didn't!

I'm not normally 'inconvenienced' by deliveries, most people tend to buzz and wait for a few seconds for a reply which would (a) be far less irritating and (b) not wake everyone up. I've had lots of deliveries with no issues. But thanks for the advice.

The mother might have had no real option but to take her dd out on deliveries. I'm sure there's a million other things that they would rather be doing on a Sunday morning. Why shit on them by reporting it? Mum was probably just trying to make things a bit more interesting for her dd.

Hopefully she'll take on board your feedback and not do it again. Maybe she thought it wasn't working?

Ledkr, delivery was not the issue. Continuous pressing of door bell is rude and annoying regardless of who does it. If they are doing that to every delivery, it's very inconsiderate. Mobility impedes some people, they should have some patience.

Don't worry silly, I have no intention of reporting. I've said my piece, it's done.

OP never said that she did. But, if you do deliveries, you need to be aware that some people do shift work or have been up late on Saturday nights and are entitled to sleep; babies may well be asleep; people may be ill; or they may simply be in the middle of something else and unable to get to the door immediately. Sure, the 8 year old may not have been aware of that, but her mother should have been.

Why on earth would you not complain? Leaving aside the issue of bringing her child and allowing said child to make deliveries, the driver was rude to you.

If she didn't want her daughter telling off she should do her own job. I would complain. Having items delivered is a service which you pay for. I have lots of things delivered and every driver is polite. I also help them out and always take in parcels for others.

Delivery drivers know that people work shifts/have young children/are sometimes sick. There was need to hold the bell down.
