To get a taste for Zinfandel?

Ok, so I've never really liked the taste of wine, but my taste buds are definately changing with age.
Whereas I would always choose sweet over savoury I now sometimes prefer crisps, cheese and crackers or a pie!
Someone gave DH me a bottle of Zinfandel Rose and I really like it, I've had 3 glasses this week which is very very rare for me, the family are looking at me like Confused and DD is convinced I've become alcoholic!
I know nothing about wine, but I know I like this taste, is it a good wine? or naff like the old Blue Nun Grin
What else might I like?

i like white zinfrandel, preferably the gallo one
but i have given up drinking wine as it gets me drunk quick and get a bad hangover

laracroft2001 · 29/05/2015 19:37

Ooh try a grenache rose. Thats my favourite. The fact that i can name a type of wine makes me feel old.

It used to just be 'lambrini'

It's on par with blue WKDs. Which are, incidentally, also delicious Wink

Some people says it's more of a juice than a wine which is fab - love to get pissed off a glass of juice. Anyway, YANBU, the only wine I like is Rose. common

It doesn't matter. If you like it, thats all that matters.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 29/05/2015 20:07

there is so much snobbery about wine, it can often be 'emperors new clothes' with everyone agreeing that 'chardonnay is fab' then next week 'ooh pinot grigio is it' or ' sauvignon is the best' try them all and decide yourself, our palettes are all different, some of us like dry wines some like sweet, some can't abide any wine at all so go with what you like, Wine enjoy!

Purplepoodle · 29/05/2015 20:10

People will snub it butits lovely. We used to buy it by the case as everyone in our group would drink it inc blokes

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 29/05/2015 20:13

Zinfandel is trash really but if you enjoy it, crack on. It's v popular, so you certainly aren't alone in your love of it.

IndridCold · 29/05/2015 20:27

Drink it because you like it, not because it is a 'good' wine.

In blind tastings recently a group of people were given the same wine, but in two different bottles - one 'cheap' and one expensive. Most people couldn't tell the difference Smile.

HopOnTheMonnerBus · 29/05/2015 20:31

I'm a Zinfandel or Grenache kind of gal too.

Tonight though I have a French white I won in a raffle. It's nice but I prefer a good cheapy pink wine.

RedDwarfPosse · 29/05/2015 20:34

I don't think it's up there with the sophisticated wines, (i once saw Frasier (from the tv show!) having a total meltdown because he went on a date with a woman who asked for white zinfandel in a restaurant and embarrassed him! So i take it from that its not classy! Lol...but I love Barefoot White Zinfandel from Sainsbury's. I'm normally a g&t / v&t / martini kinda gal... but this u could drink by the gallon. But I don't care whether it's a good wine or not, I can't stand snobbery but I can stand a lot of this wine!

Kundry · 29/05/2015 20:40

Zinfandel is on a par with Blue Nun for naffness the Frasier episode is hilarious but if you like it, stick to your guns

MrsMoggy · 29/05/2015 20:49

I love Zinfandel, got a glass of gallo white Zinfandel on the go at the minute. White Grenache Gallo is my favourite and blossom hill. Reasonably priced and easy drinking. I like sweet drinks though, I am ultra "common" as I still like a blue wkd or Smirnoff Ice. Drink what you like doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. All my friends drink Zinfandel as well

DosDuchas · 29/05/2015 20:53

i love rose but cant stand it

I like a nice dry French one. there is one on offer at Majestic atm, pied tanque that is lovely

DosDuchas · 29/05/2015 20:53

grenache is just sugar and calories...

DosDuchas · 29/05/2015 20:54

Blossom hill! snigger

YouTheCat · 29/05/2015 21:09

Ew

JustMarriedBecca · 29/05/2015 21:09

It's my guilty pleasure. The Barefoot Rose is particularly deliciously sweet. Female wine producer too so feminist fistpump

NoMilkNoSugar · 29/05/2015 21:13

Wine is like art, you like what you like, so stuff others options.

I am currently necking cava!

FlabulousChix · 29/05/2015 21:16

I'm 50 and always hated wine. The Zinfandel one you speak of is the only wine I can drink having found it a few weeks ago

LavenderRain · 29/05/2015 21:33

Seems I'm not a total loser then Grin this bottle is called Vicelo

Cheers Wine

Try m&s prosecco I discovered that recently after being a zindafel drinker. Also quite partial to a magners cider.

Zindafel isnt that cheap either now I think it's its nearly £8 bottle for e&g variety. People snub wines but you dont see the same with beer.
