Ovulated from left side the month our dd was conceived.

old wives tale says left for girl, right for boy but dr friends think that is rubbish.

who is right?

How did "old wives" know which ovary they ovulated from?

Annunziata · 16/05/2015 21:14

How on earth do you know which ovary you are using?!

Hmm
Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 16/05/2015 21:14

Yanbu to believe it if you wish but my last boy was from my left I know for certain as I had the right one removed!

Headagainstwall · 16/05/2015 21:15

sperm determines the sex of the baby. So... no.

ginmakesitallok · 16/05/2015 21:16

It's bollocks. Sex is determined by which sperm fertilises the egg, not the egg which is fertilised.

Gunpowder · 16/05/2015 21:16

Monsters I can feel a lump on corresponding side.

I'm with your Doctor friends OP, and all the old wives tales/predictions have been wrong for both my DDs. I think there's something in nub theory though.

ThursdayLast · 16/05/2015 21:17

Total utter complete bollix.

I'm astounded by the tripe that gets spouted by rational adults as soon as a woman becomes pregnant.

Annunziata · 16/05/2015 21:20

But which ovary actually is left and which is right, because it would be different whether you were looking at you from the inside or from the outside?

TheMaw · 16/05/2015 21:20

Nope, DS was from the left ovary and implanted in the left. Load of old bollocks, I'm afraid.

NurseRoscoe · 16/05/2015 21:22

I don't believe any old wives tales!

It's just whatever sperm gets there first!

cantbelieveimonhere · 16/05/2015 21:24

Have always felt when I ovulate. Thought everyone did, but apparently not!! Only when discussing TTC with friends recently did it emerge this is unusual!!
Mid cycle have a day of pain (approx 6 hours with 1 hr of intense pain in the middle of that). 14 days later I get my period. Pain alternates from left to right each month.

Do any other MNetters experience this?

OP posts:
Monstersinthegarden · 16/05/2015 21:25

Interesting, Gun, never heard of that before!

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 16/05/2015 21:29

My SIL can tell which side she's ovulating from.

But I can see no possible mechanism by which it could affect the sex of the baby. All your eggs, whichever side they come from, contain an X chromosome. The sex is determined by the sperm and it's demonstrably not the case that they sort themselves into two batches and all the X sperm swim up the left Fallopian tube and all the Y sperm swim up the right Fallopian tube.

cantbelieveimonhere · 16/05/2015 21:29

Re which is left and right - anatomical position

Interesting... Have a daughter studying sociology at uni and they were presented with research done at her uni which strongly suggested that whichever parent was under most stress during conception dictated the sex of the child!... Ie dad under most stress = son ... Statistics did seem very convincing... Just saying

cantbelieveimonhere · 16/05/2015 21:34

Oooh, new theory! Time to google!

OP posts:
Charlotte3333 · 16/05/2015 21:40

I don't believe the theory since science tells us that the gender of a child is dictated by the sperm.

However, I do think you can know which side you ovulate from, because I can feel it. I thought I was going bonkers so asked the nurse at my yearly smear test, she says some women feel mild pain/discomfort on the side they ovulate from in the run up to a period. It sounds bonkers but it really is true.

Daimgirl · 16/05/2015 21:42

Pain during ovulation is called Mittelschmerz. Commonly recognised condition.

As far as we know at the moment the sperm dicates the sex, however there currently is some thought /research in to the 'covering' of the egg and how some eggs maybe more receptive to XX sperm or other way round.
But there is still so much we don't know.

cantbelieveimonhere · 16/05/2015 21:55

?the egg having a "preference" would give a reason why ovulation alternates from left to right each month?

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 21:57

The clue is in the name: old wives' tale - you know, like it fairy tale.

It's rubbish - women who have only one ovary are perfectly capable of having boys and girls.
The baby's sex is determined by dad's contribution anyway Grin

PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 21:58

And ovulation does not necessarily alternate between ovaries, does it?
Never heard any of this before Confused

cantbelieveimonhere · 16/05/2015 22:01

Pretty sure it does alternate usually (would be considered unusual for it not too)

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 22:02

Nope, not necessarily

PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 22:04

Or:

"Which ovary (left or right) the winner comes from appears to be largely random - the ovaries aren't so well coordinated as to alternate sides or anything. For instance, the right ovum might produce the ova for three months in a row before the left gets a chance, or vice versa. It's like tossing a coin."

from here

Vivacia · 16/05/2015 22:08

left for girl, right for boy

Can you just explain to us why you think this could be true?
