To not know how old I was when I got my first period?

I have a new GP and I was asked this at my first appointment. I remember what house I lived in at the time so could say it was sometime between the ages of 10 and 15, but beyond that I have no idea. GP was surprised. Is this something most women remember?

I know I had just turned 10 a couple of months previously, so yes, January 1976

GlitterTwinkleToes · 13/05/2015 23:42

Yes I remember the exact date of mine (it was bonfire night so easy to remember) and the fact I was so horrified that it had happened

HeartShapedBox · 13/05/2015 23:43

I remember mine, mind you the circs were pretty memorable so don't know if others remember theirs so clearly.

QueenB14 · 13/05/2015 23:44

I don't remember when in the year but I was 13 and had just nipped to the loo in school on the way to a Geography lesson

Sometimes I remember the weirdest stuff and sometimes I haven't a clue!

BackforGood · 13/05/2015 23:50

No - I mean, I could narrow it down to between 12 and 16, but I couldn't beyond that.
No-one has ever asked me this either though - why did they want to know ? [confusd]

TamzinGrey · 13/05/2015 23:57

I can remember the shock of it and having to pluck up courage to tell my mother (how sad was that). I know that I was the first among my friends, but I couldn't say exactly how old I was.

Akire · 13/05/2015 23:58

Yes definelty remember all the details, probable because from the first have always been a nightmare!

Fluffyears · 14/05/2015 00:00

2nd year I was 13. I remember a strange 'running' sensation as I walked home from school then when I went to loo I realised I had started.

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 14/05/2015 00:00

Is there a resson why your GP was asking this? I can't imagine why they'd want to know Confused

I was 10 when I started mine. I remember it was a shock because I was a short scrawny thing and had no other signs of puberty.

Fizzyplonk · 14/05/2015 00:06

You we're prob typical then.
Most girls in my school were early 13.
I was nearly 14 but still just 13 : )
I had been waiting as Mum and sis had been slightly earlier than typical at 11.

HopOnTheMonnerBus · 14/05/2015 00:25

August 8th 1993.

I only remember because it was my brother's birthday and we were heading out for a family meal. I was 13.

ByTheWishingWell · 14/05/2015 00:29

I have never been asked by a Dr, don't know why they would! But no idea really. Sometime between 10 and 15 sounds about right.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 14/05/2015 00:33

Strange Queen, mine started aged 13 in the middle of Geography lesson! I just remember having a horrible cramp and not knowing wtf had just happened.

CookPassBabtrigde · 14/05/2015 00:37

I remember because I was getting on for 16 and everyone else in my class had started (I went to an all girls school and it was common knowledge who had started for some reason)
When it happened i was at home and just remember thinking 'oh ffs!' I didnt want it to happen!
Word got out fairly quick at school it was like being initiated Grin
Never been asked about it by a gp though, why did they ask?

SycamoreMum · 14/05/2015 00:41

Never been asked by a GP, but I do remember I started at 9 years old. Which wasn't shocking seeing as I'd got my first training bra for my 8th birthday. I remember being excited because I was the first in my year to get it. Now I want the bastard to go away (well not really I've apparently started peri menopause (?) and am now slightly scared it'll go sooner rather than later.)

Sigh.

SilverBirch2015 · 14/05/2015 00:45

I'm with you, can't remember with any certainty 13/14 probably. Mind you I have a terrible chronological memory, I had quite any early menopause and I'm not sure to within 4 years about that either and that was only 10 years or so ago!

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 14/05/2015 00:49

I was 13.5 and on holiday without my parents. I walked to the village shop and bought a massive pack of Simplicity pads with all the money that I had for sweets :( I was dead excited about telling my mum but when she came to pick me up she was in a foul mood and shouted at me for something, so I didn't want to tell her, and ended up keeping it a secret for over 6 months until she found some knickers with blood on them in my room.

goodasitgets · 14/05/2015 01:54

I only remember because I can recall which school I was at which narrows it down a fair bit. Would have been 9, but then a long gap before they started properly at 10

TellingTheBees · 14/05/2015 02:55

I was 12 or 13. I think it was 12 but I can't be sure. My memory is rubbish.

Talismania · 14/05/2015 03:04

So it's weird the GP asked? Interesting. I had assumed it was a general intake question but now I wonder why! (Haven't been asked before but also not seen a new GP for a long time)

I remember - the first day of year 8 at school, so September 2001. I was twelve.

lambsie · 14/05/2015 05:43

December 1981, age11, just before a pe lesson, got me out of having to have a shower afterwards.

flora717 · 14/05/2015 05:45

I remember so much about the circumstances, but not about how old I was! (I was at secondary, I'd worn bras for 3 - 4 years I think, so 12-13).

Idocrazythings · 14/05/2015 05:56

I remember because I was 14 and one of the last to get it.

I'd guess the gp wanted to know as it can give clues to hormonal issues. Eg. polycystic ovaries; etc. could just be a general question if they are doing a thorough health history
