To think people watch some really weird stuff

My husband has been watching this weird YouTube channel which is a guy playing mortal combat for 10 hours a day! 10 HOURS A DAY!

He has people pay a £3 subscription a month to watch him play this IMO child's game everyday!

He even has a feature where people can donate to his further game purchases, donations to his lifestyle and the option to buy him takeaways so he can continue playing!

WTF, that's crazy!

I'm thinking I might just set up a feed to my website and stream me working (I'm an artist). I wonder if people would actually pay to watch me work? And donate to my lifestyle and buy me takeaways?

Aibu to think 1. People watch any old shit 2. I should talk to my web developer about making a live stream for me. Wink

You can always try.Grin

How inventive.

fortunately · 09/05/2015 19:08

That's fucking weird.

My toddler watches people making stuff out of plasticine to annoying plinky plonk music....

However the real oddballs imo are the adults who set up massive tableaux of kids toys and act out scenes from Peppa, or Sofia The First, or mashups of everything. Hours moving these stupid toys around accompanied by an irritating commentary: "ooh who's that at the door Mummy Pig?" "It's Sofia come for a princess sleepover!"

Nutters.

Lesausage · 09/05/2015 19:09

Lmao! Yes yes I know! My dd watches this annoying voiced woman urrghhhhhh.

You've obviously not seen Mortal Combat if you think it's a child's game, some of the deaths are gore porn.

HappySpills · 09/05/2015 19:13
  1. It's Mortal Kombat
  2. It's not a child's game
  3. "Nutter" is a horrible word.
Lesausage · 09/05/2015 19:13

Is it really? I've never seen it. I have never been into computer games, my DH has a ps4 and plays games when the kids and I are in bed but I've never sat down and watched them.

I wasn't too pleased when DH got grand theft auto but he's an adult and can do as he pleases I suppose.

Just wouldn't expect 30+ Old men to subscribe to this channel (DH is watching it now while I work) it's crazy.

YouTheCat · 09/05/2015 19:15

Well go for it then.

You might want to be a little less patronising about gaming though. Just because it's not your thing, doesn't mean other adults shouldn't enjoy it. Although, Mortal Combat, is a bit crap imo, it's most certainly not for kids.

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 09/05/2015 19:15

I would love to watch you work. I love hairdressing tutorial videos on you tube (I am not a hairdresser).
I am going to search you tube for people doing art. I loved paint with Nancy and the frizzy, beardy bloke.

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 09/05/2015 19:16

I watch lots of Minecraft videos with the kids. We're big fans of the Yogscast in our house.

HappySpills · 09/05/2015 19:17

People probably would watch videos of you working if you made it interesting enough; the creative process can be fascinating if it's edited right, maybe sped up in places, with some entertaining or informative commentary. This guy your DH watches must be doing something right as there are a lot of wannabe streamers out there.

Lesausage · 09/05/2015 19:17

Don't mean to sound patronising to gamers (my mum plays ps avidly and she's 58) I suppose it just baffles me why people pay to "watch" it on YouTube, why not play it yourself?

I get you can use it to review games but again there are plenty of reviews websites etc but to actually pay to watch someone else play seems weird to me.

OP posts:
fortunately · 09/05/2015 19:18

Exactly! Do it yourself rather than watch someone else doing it!

What's wrong with the word nutters?

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 09/05/2015 19:22

It is no different than watching a cooking programme or that sewing be thing. The people doing the video have to either entertaining or informative (ideally both).

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 09/05/2015 19:22

YANBU.

DS1 used to love watching videos made by trainspotters at Clapham Junction. Yawn!

DS2 loves a weird 'educational' video where a cartoon princess has to point to different colours. She sometimes gets it WRONG which is apparently hilarious if you are 2.

We all quite like watching videos of kittens trying to jump off stuff.

HappySpills · 09/05/2015 19:22

Nutter is just a bit of a nasty insult, to me. Worse than nutty or nuts. I don't know why, I just don't like it, I've had it shouted at me in the street, so when I see people use it, I tell them I don't like it, then it's up to the if they want to keep using it or not. For some people I'm sure it has no such bad connotations.

fortunately · 09/05/2015 19:32

I've just watched a live feed of some two day old kittens for a few minutes.

They were being washed and then one miaowed.

Now THAT was worth watching Smile

HappySpills · 09/05/2015 19:32

And no link?! Wink

Lesausage · 09/05/2015 19:35

Precisely fortunately! I mean you can't be a kitten being washed and meowing!

I love watching fails, it's the ones on scooters that get me.

gamingmum · 09/05/2015 19:37

Join sites like patreon if you are good enough people will pay for you to do your art it's all about offering something people want, so if a guy can make money playing games he loves then good on him!

nocoolnamesleft · 09/05/2015 20:55

Kitten link please.

abigamarone · 09/05/2015 22:05

There's kittens on www.tinykittens.com they're older than two days though.

NurseRoscoe · 09/05/2015 22:15

Wow! My DH thinks my obsession with holby city, GPs behind closed doors (anything medical/nursing related) is weird, as apparently I get enough of it at work. But that's normal compared to some of these! At least I know other people who watch them too! Never heard of a youtube thing like that before but then again I only really use youtube for music, DIY videos when I actually need them or for the kids to watch peppa pig

JCDenton · 10/05/2015 00:54

I suppose it just baffles me why people pay to "watch" it on YouTube, why not play it yourself?

It's like football, people love to see a game they enjoy played well. I generally enjoy playing games rather than watching them but I do like a Youtuber who does XCOM, a strategy game because he's entertaining and informative and it is fun to see the game in more skilled hands than mine.

I also like to read accounts of what people have done in the Paradox grand strategy games which are very complex games where you can rule over anywhere over a period of 869-1950. It's fun to see people attempt things like heal the Great Schism, pursue an appeasement policy against Germany in 1945 or end Japan's isolationism a century early.

So live and let live, really. We're all posting on an internet forum so none of us can throw too many stones.

Also regarding Mortal Kombat, fighting games really aren't my thing but they're very very complex and there skill ceiling is sky high so I can see why a skilled player would get a lot of views.

'Child's Game'? Come on, is it 1995?

MrsNextDoor · 10/05/2015 01:52

You want weird YouTube videos?

Take a look at the work of Alan Tutorial. He's basically satirized the phenomenon of YouTube Tutorials....and something more than that as he does it. His stuff is odd, odd, odd...yet mesmerizing.

fattymcfatfat · 10/05/2015 02:03

haha! loved mortal kombat when I was younger. bit ridiculous now though, saw it for Xbox and it Has Freddie Krueger in... not really sure how he fits into it but hey ho. gruesome deaths for a game though
and yy to yogscast. me and DS watch all the time. Grin
