AIBU to think it is too cold for mandatory summer school uniform

It was 5 degrees this morning and DD was freezing in her summer dress, cardigan and long socks pulled up. Boys were in shorts. Wearing summer uniform became mandatory from this morning.

AIBU to think that small children (DD is 4) should not have to be cold at school? Or am I a big southern softie and do I need to toughen her up?

I don't know. My kids are in summer uniform by choice. They are just 4 and almost 11. It was warmer than 5 degrees here this morning though. Its been warm enough for well over a week, Imo and neither child has said their are cold.

I have never heard of a school having mandatory summer uniform.

stoopstofolly · 27/04/2015 15:55

It's too cold! DD (9) checked the forecast for today and went in wearing winter skirt, tights, cardigan and fleece....... No mandatory summer uniform though!

Yeesss · 27/04/2015 15:56

Note was sent home in book bags in Friday saying that the headmaster requires summer uniform to be worn from today. Private school, if that is relevant.

I think it's a private school thing.

And I do agree it's ridiculous to have to wear summer uniform when it is freezing (or winter uniform when it's baking).

MangoJuggler · 27/04/2015 15:59

Brrrrrrrrrr

Does the uniform allow for a warm vest?

ouryve · 27/04/2015 15:59

Absolutely, YANBU. There was frost here, this morning, and we're forecast sleet, later this week. I wore my winter coat and boots for the school walk, today.

Morelikeguidelines · 27/04/2015 16:00

Yanbu.

We have this at a state school.

It's freezing some mornings and today dd was shivering in thin winter dress with tights, thin cardigan (must be specific shade of blue) and coat.

Boys have to wear shorts so don't even have option of tights.

Morelikeguidelines · 27/04/2015 16:01

Sorry - thin summer dress!

Yeesss · 27/04/2015 16:01

Stupidly I never thought to put her in a vest. Will keep her warm on top but won't stop the chilly legs. I'd hate to wear a skirt without tights at the moment.

We had an inch of snow yesterday which was still lying this morning so no to summer uniform. Mind you, I was helping on a trip and we ate our packed lunches outside...

TedAndLola · 27/04/2015 16:04

I saw two schoolgirls on a train platform earlier in skirts down to mid-thigh and bare legs, not even tights. They must have been freezing! I don't agree with making girls wear skirts / dresses as uniform anyway - trousers should always be an option.

Icimoi · 27/04/2015 16:05

Headteacher obviously didn't look at the forecast. Can you suggest to him that girls should be allowed to wear tights for the moment?

MirandaWest · 27/04/2015 16:05

DS wears shorts by choice all year round. Slightly odd child but he seems happy.

SingingHinnies · 27/04/2015 16:06

We can wear either uniform, try and get her some tights, we have red cardies so i put red tights on her and a vest underneath with her coat, not much different to winter uniform really

Taz1212 · 27/04/2015 16:08

We're in the middle of a hailstorm here (Scotland) so no, YANBU! Grin

Morelikeguidelines · 27/04/2015 16:09

Girls not allowed trousers at our school either.

Is ridiculous. God knows why we send her there (do know really as it is good school in all other respects. Just has mad uniform rules - coats in specific colours only at a state school!)

storytopper · 27/04/2015 16:10

Snowing here - central Scotland. YANBU!

Can't she wear tights under her dress? Ballet tights with her socks over the top might not even be noticed, if it's not allowed.
Or knee length cycling shorts or cropped leggings hidden under her dress or something?

TheMagnificientFour · 27/04/2015 16:14

YANBU.
What you wear should reflect the weather. As we know, it is still a time in the year when it will vary considerably so stating that 'Children now have to wear the summer school uniform' is just stupid.

Have you tried to have a chat with the HT or teacher?

Having said that, I know a school where the uniform was still socks and shorts all year around, incl in the winter. I also thought they were completely crazy and still living in the 1900s

youarekiddingme · 27/04/2015 16:17

A girl down my road goes to local indi school. Saw her in summer uniform this morning and ankle socks with a thin cardie. No coat! Thought she looked lovely but a little cold.
When it was really hot here they were still. Winter uniform, tights and coat Hmm

base9 · 27/04/2015 16:19

I have noticed that at private schools round our way too, while the state school kids are still on long trousers and hooded sweatshirts against the cold wind.
Is freezing from a certain date onwards a special rite of passage for people wealthy enough for private school? Does it kill off the ones not considered hardy enough for private education?

Yes - I went to a school like that in the 70s. We used to wear our crimpilene elasticated waist trousers and whip them off at school. A substantial vest was essential.

VirginiaTonic · 27/04/2015 16:25

Just wear a long winter coat over it.

Namelesswonder · 27/04/2015 16:35

Currently snowing in Edinburgh!
