AIBU to think it is too cold for mandatory summer school uniform

It was 5 degrees this morning and DD was freezing in her summer dress, cardigan and long socks pulled up. Boys were in shorts. Wearing summer uniform became mandatory from this morning.

AIBU to think that small children (DD is 4) should not have to be cold at school? Or am I a big southern softie and do I need to toughen her up?

Cheap it is not! Around £500 per child per year!

No mandatory summer uniform here, in fact few children here wear those school dresses, (in NE Scotland)

We've actually had snow here the past couple of days, so any child wearing thin summer clothes would be frozen!

Summer dress for girl I look after is over £30...

£30 for a kids summer dress - how ridiculous. I used to pay a fiver for my daughters, from Asda or Tescos. I really don't see the point of expensive school uniforms.

It's bespoke fabric from a specific shop only...

NE Scotland here too, DN chose to wear summer dress with long socks today, even though weather has been flitting between bright sunshine and snow/hail. She just likes the summer uniform much better and runs around whenever she's outside so doesn't feel the cold. Don't think it should be mandatory though, not all kids are the same as DN!

Summer dresses seem to get worn by some children all year round at our school but in winter they may wear thick tights and a vest. I actually don't think many of the supermarket 'winter' trousers and skirts are much warmer anyway. The secondary girls seem to just wear tights in winter and have nearly done away with their skirts altogether!
