Short people problems!

Why oh why do almost every clothes shop put short length jeans on the top shelf/hangers? Where's the sense in that?! Confused

What other short people problems really annoy you?

Hirples Petite ranges are normally to 5' 3" but as I am that height and some of the stuff comes up short on me, I have no idea what height they really design them for!

The worst offender is a dress I got from M&S last year. Really nice tailored number with some fluting round the bottom of the skirt. It finishes 4" above my knees and is almost indecent.

Its also worth checking the online size guides on any short length trousers as they all work on a different leg length. M&S used to be a shocking offender where Per Una was longer than the standard collection.

Actually I've just seen that M&S have introduced an Extra Short length which is 26". Short is 29", Standard 31" and Long 22".

Being served in a bar 30 minutes after your mates moved on assuming that you'd got the bus home because the bar staff were ignoring you behind the bar taps, and it was too crowded to move. And DH wonders why I hate going to the bar. They're usually neck height.

maroonedwithfour · 14/04/2015 17:28

My kitchen cupboards are too high -i use the toddler stool petite clothes are often too long.Hmm

Almostfifty · 14/04/2015 18:25

I don't think there is a single thing I haven't agreed on in this thread.

Not that anyone would dare think to rest their pint, or themselves on me. They would get my look.

dontcallmelen · 14/04/2015 18:45

Ooh forgot to mention ASOS now do size 2 heels, got a lovely mint green leather pair last week (30.00).

lemonyone · 14/04/2015 18:49

This is a weird one:
But I HATED going 'premium class' on a recent flight. We got about a foot more legroom (tall DH very happy) but with no footrests. For me, having my little legs swinging free for 7 hours was really uncomfortable. I usually can tuck them into the seat pocket in front of me to give support. I would rather have been back in economy.

I guess that is a bit of a champagne-style moan, isn't it?

Reena31 · 14/04/2015 18:51

I have that same problem, but I use a risotto spoon (wooden spoon with a hole in the middle) now I open and clothes all the kitchen windows! :)

lemonyone · 14/04/2015 18:52

Hirples - I'm with you on the clothing thing!

Someone who is 5'4'' is NOT petite (in my rather moany opinion). They are average height.
So petite clothes are still 4'' long and it chaps my arse.

Frostycake · 14/04/2015 18:59

I am always asked to reach for stuff on top shelves by smaller people even though Im only five foot six and a half - I look tall apparently. I do have massively long arms though so its not a problem.

westcoastnortherneragain · 14/04/2015 19:01

I too use my potato masher to reach things! I also find my spaghetti scoop handy to grab things too.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 14/04/2015 19:14

4ft11 and I used to climb supermarket shelves until The Incident In Sainsburys. Nowadays I go looking for a member of staff to inconvenience instead.

As for the aren't you short /cute comments, I have a whole range of answers for those, which leave people in no doubt that I'm not cute at all!

brookby · 14/04/2015 19:14

Not being able to lie down in the bath! I'm surprised this hadn't been mentioned yet Grin

lemonyone · 14/04/2015 19:18

Brookby - I deliberately bought a 'slipper bath' for our new bathroom. It looks mini and deep and I don't slide down it.
DH looks ridiculous in it, like a baby in a bucket. But luckily he likes showers so we're all happy.

HirplesWithHaggis · 14/04/2015 19:21

What, without ending up under water you mean, brookby? Grin

starfishmummy · 14/04/2015 19:21

Short and fat so the assumption is that I want black polyester trousers. So I don't want garish ones but non-polyester would be nice

Raahh · 14/04/2015 19:22

I once fell head first into a chest freezer, trying to get something from the bottom. Blush

And yes! YES! To 5ft 4 not being petite.
There was a time, not so long ago, that standard leg length was 29"- not bloody petite. And the word 'petite' itself annoys me, it implies all hort people are small all over. Well, I'm not - I'm short with 34ff boobs.

Next used to do a petite leg that was 25.5 inches. It was perfect.

And I often get dead legs and feet from not being able to reach the floor.

I'm 4ft 8- I'm not going to grow any time soon, I'm 43Grin.
I HATE clothes shopping (probably good I can't afford to!)

ShakeyPushDown · 14/04/2015 19:25

Small shoes on the top shelf. Grr.

Mirrors in pubs where I can see the top of my hair if I'm lucky.

Plumbers who install the shower head so high it's unreachable to adjust.

I got a slipper bath too. :-) Not that I use it much, I'm busy in the shower poking it with my toothbrush to adjust the water.

Overhead cabinets in the kitchen - I can reach the bottom shelf only.

High heels that are the same height in size 3 as they are in size 7. So the angle is much more acute for us. Can't wear them.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 14/04/2015 19:27

Omg I can't believe I forgot about the bath issue. In our previous house we had the bathroom refitted when we first moved in and I purposefully chose a bath that fitter me (ie I could just about lie down in it if my toes were stretched out towards the other end). When we moved last year I had forgotten about normal sized baths until I went to lie down for a relaxing soak and nearly got half the bath water up my nose when my feet couldn't reach the end and my head went under. Not had a bath since (16months)!

TiredButFine · 14/04/2015 19:39

My tall boss put our printer on a high up cupboard so now I can't read the screen or quite reach the printing. Someone bought me a little foot stool (like the one I use in my kitchen at home) however a tall man in the office thought it was funny, stood on it and destroyed it.

dillydottydally · 14/04/2015 19:45

I hate never being able to get boots that fit. My calf gets fat too low down so it's really hard to find any that I can do up without cutting the circulation off.

Mostly though I like being short, at least there is a huge selection of men taller than me, I don't know any grownup men shorter than me. I also can wear whatever size heels I like without towering over anyone.

mummylin2495 · 14/04/2015 19:55

Another short person here who uses the potato masher to close my kitchen window, I just cannot reach over the sink to close it. I also have to ask people to reach things off shelves in shops for me. And to reach the top shelves of my kitchen cupboards I have to stand on a stool

Jetgir1 · 14/04/2015 20:03

I'm 5'3" and I consider myself the tall end of "short" yet I still cannot:
Get trousers that fit (29" leg is too long for me. No clue how they expect people under 5' to fit in them)
Reach my kitchen windows (another potato masher advocate)
Reach anything from: the top shelf of my fridge freezer, my top shelves, top shelf of all stores ever.
I also struggle with dangly feet on chairs, deep trolleys etc.
Why is the world not designed around us? I'm fairly sure 5'5" is about average height for women so why at 5'3" do I STILL feel like a midget? I feel for my shorter sisters.

SecretNutellaFix · 14/04/2015 20:09

I'm not classed as "short" at 5'5".
However, I have 27 1/2 inch inside leg. My torso is longer than my DH, who is 6'.

He finds it funny to stride off into the distance with me yelling after him "Slow down, Little legs!"

Out0fCheeseError · 14/04/2015 20:35

I simply cannot open the doors of those damn trains that only have the handle on the outside, so you have to reach through the window. I missed my stop once because it was late and quiet and I couldn't get off the train SadAngry

Blazing88 · 14/04/2015 20:37

Ordering in Subway - eyelevel is level with the block bit of the counter. Do you tiptoe to peer over or dip to peer under!? Grin

On a personal level..I've never been able to wipe back to front Blush My arms are just not long enough. Never have been! So i wipe front to back very very very precisely! TMI! (never had any problems!
