To think fizzy drinks in cake mix is wrong on every level possible

I'm on a Facebook group for slow cooker recipes and people keep posting recipes for cake with fizzy drinks mixed in Envy AIBU to think this is disgustingly unhealthy ?? especially with most of them using packet mix cake which has more sugar in than a cake mix from scratch adding cans of coca cola on top of that and feeding it to your DC is asking for trouble surely Shock i know cakes aren't exactly healthy in the first place but that's no reason to make them about 1000x more unhealthy with about the equivalent of 50 spoons of sugar in it ?? plus i can only imagine it tastes like warm flat fizzy pop that's been left out in the sun ? Please tell me im not alone on this one Confused btw i myself use betty crocker mixes every few months or so so im not prejudiced to the actual cake mixes which are quite delicious Wink

Well, don't make them then! Not trying to be disingenuous, but really, no one is holding you at knifepoint with a can of cola are they (or are they?)

We made a cherry cola cake. It was OK.

Fizzy drinks in cake mixes? I've never heard of that. Yabvu

momtothree · 07/04/2015 23:24

First i suggest u try one!!!!! Once is enough .... i made one from scratch so the only sugar was from the lemonade - i may aswel have given them a bag of sugar to eat.....lovely

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/04/2015 23:25

I made a cola cake that was OK. What about beer batter? Same concept. And if you treat cake as a very occasional food, who cares if it's not healthy? I wouldn't use packet mixes though, the pop is instead of lots of sugar in the batter.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/04/2015 23:25

I'm sure it was all meant as a way if making them egg free so good for allergy no?

as with anything else. choose to make or not make one. what's the issue

Fizzy drinks in cake mixes? I've never heard of that.Yanbu

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/04/2015 23:26

Nigella has one. It's not very good! Grin

crimsonh · 07/04/2015 23:26

adding coke to cakes or casseroles - I wonder if anyone actually looked at what is possibly happening to all those ingredients in that drink under high temperature

if the answer is - no - then I would not touch it

TheWhiteRoad · 07/04/2015 23:26

YANBU to think they sound seriously unhealthy. YABU to get your kickers in a twist about it. Don't like it? Don't make it. And consider leaving the FB group if it bothers you that much.

PurpleBananaPie · 07/04/2015 23:26

I made one with Diet Coke, it was lush. Don't usually make cakes of any description but saw this recipe on FB so have it a try. Lovely.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 07/04/2015 23:27

I love chocolate coca cola cake. It's delicious and not too sweet. It doesn't use a whole can though.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 07/04/2015 23:28

I've used a ginger beer in ginger cake once. It adds to the flavour and requisite stickiness of a good ginger sponge. Not sure about cola and lemonade though?
Also why slow cook a cake? What's the benefit?

FizzyGood · 07/04/2015 23:28

At least they've stopped talking about fudge Wink

seaoflove · 07/04/2015 23:28

Have you seen the slow cooker bread they all rave about? It looks absolutely shite Grin

SwirlyThingAlert · 07/04/2015 23:28

Sounds rank to me. This coming from someone who is a member of Facebook slow cooker groups, and luffs my slow cooker!
Not seen any of those recipes yet. May have to bleee a little if I do.
Oh and I've never seen the point in Betty Crocker type cake mixes either. Surely that's just your flour in an overpriced bag?! Confused

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 07/04/2015 23:29

This is the recipe. Honestly it's so good.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 07/04/2015 23:30

Whoops. I missed the slow cooker bit.

myusernameisusername · 07/04/2015 23:38

They were talking about fudge this morning when i checked my news feed Grin lots of huns on that page too Wink and its a slow cooking page so everything i mean everything has to be alow cooked im just waiting for someone to post that they are slow cooking the stains out of their husbands underwear or something Grin wouldn't surprise me in the slightest

squoosh · 07/04/2015 23:38

I'm on that Facebook group too. I won't lie, if offered a slice of cake/coke mix I'd try it. Not at all tempted to make it though.

At least is looks more palatable than that awful Fakeaway stuff.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 07/04/2015 23:41

Well those cakes get lots of likes in the group. I haven't made a cake using slower cooker yet as I too lazy for that.

Btw its a fab group with few bun fights thrown in for good measure, Just don't mention the slower cooker bags Wink

myusernameisusername · 07/04/2015 23:42

slow cooked bread is great if you want a cylindrical loaf of bread the size of your slow cooker i speak from experience Grin it was also as hard as a brick Sad the oven is the devil on this page any mention of it and its all choruses of "use your slow cooker hun its cheaper than way" Hmm don't even mention microwaves either Wink

OP posts:
ouryve · 07/04/2015 23:44

YANBU. Cake without fizzy drinks mixed in is so much healthier Hmm

myusernameisusername · 07/04/2015 23:44

Slow cooker bags ? "your Killing the planet hun" "£2 for 4 bags what a rip off" Grin was a very entertaining post that one

DH puts 7-UP in his (American) pancakes. They are tasty (and fluffy).

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 08/04/2015 02:08

(Hello to all of you slow cookers lovers from that group!).

I cannot get my head around the ready-mix and the Coke/lemonade. Nor, if I am honest, quite how many times questions can be asked about it. I filter those posts mentally (or my brain would explode) ...
