To think you need potato with sausage casserole?

Mash or cut up.

DH disagrees. He thinks we should just make it with sausages, dumplings and a side of veg.

I got my own way

It's nice with pasta. Dumplings sound good though. I don't think you would need potatoes as well but they wouldn't hurt (jealous as am on enforced low carb diet due to gestational diabetes)

FlyingGoose · 06/04/2015 16:07

I like it served in a giant Yorkshire pudding, no potato but yea to dumplings!

MustBeLoopy390 · 06/04/2015 16:07

Personally I like mash AND dumplings, I am however a self confessed greedy bugger lmao x

Trills · 06/04/2015 16:09

I would want potatoes.

Bread would do.

You'd need a LOT of dumplings to make up for it.

Sallystyle · 06/04/2015 16:11

I'm greedy too!

He said he was going to cook sausage casserole. He was running behind so I said I would start it. Was not happy to see no potatoes!

I soon had to fix that.

Mind you, a big yorkshire sounds nice too.

Sausage Casserole requires potato of some kind. Mash or Roast or Boiled. something to soak up the sauce Smile

I am clearly weird - I serve sausage and lentil casserole with rice!

Cantbelievethisishappening · 06/04/2015 16:18

I'm doing a veggie sausage casserole tonight. I usually make mini roast potatoes and add a couple of yorkshires..... a firm favourite in this house Smile

wowfudge · 06/04/2015 16:18

I often put beans of some sort in with sausage casserole - haricot or cannellini beans are lovely.

fatlazymummy · 06/04/2015 16:19

I'd probably have bread. I can't be arsed with potatoes nowadays, either cooking or eating them.

maliaki · 06/04/2015 16:20

I use lentils and cannelloni beans too! Sometimes sweet potato or have a side of mash.

Crinkle77 · 06/04/2015 16:21

Depends what type of sausage casserole you are making. My sis makes a lovely sausage and bean casserole (no potatoes). All different types of beans with celery, carrots, paprika and syrup to give it sweetness. Yum, yum. She does have bread to dip in it so there's your carbs.

JemimaPuddlePop · 06/04/2015 16:24

Yabu if you put them in the casserole.

I put sausages, tinned tomatoes, a packet of sausage casserole mix , red peppers, mushrooms and baby corn in mine.

Dh insists that only mash on the side will do, I prefer rice and peas or green beans.

Bakeoffcake · 06/04/2015 16:29

If I make a sausage casserole with dumplings I don't do potatoes as well - that would be too carby for my liking.

MaryWestmacott · 06/04/2015 16:32

No, dumplings are sufficient carbs, so you don't need them. However, really good mash has nothing to do with need. Noone ever needs mash. It's just comfort food. It's ok to want stuff too, one of the upsides to being a grown up, you get to have mash whenever you fancy it.

Elledouble · 06/04/2015 16:32

I usually serve it with polenta. I might go off and post on the wanky kale chips thread now. Blush

CobbOnn · 06/04/2015 16:33

Never use potatoes. Not a fan. Used to use dumplings, now I use pearl barley with lots of root veg and a side of green beans. My absolute favourite winter dinner.

DustingOffTheDynastySuit · 06/04/2015 16:34

Elle taht sounds delicious! hides Oven Chips behind artisan quiche

Sallystyle · 06/04/2015 16:35

Here's another thing. He makes the dumplings with suet!

My suet free ones are much better. They are fluffy and contain less calories.

I think I should just ban him from cooking it and leave it to me in future.

He has it al wrong!

OP posts:
Trills · 06/04/2015 16:39

Suet dumplings are PROPER dumplings

Sallystyle · 06/04/2015 16:41

No they aren't.

Proper dumplings are made with flour, water and butter.

Oh I've always made my dumplings with suet.

You learn something new everyday.

cardibach · 06/04/2015 17:00

No to potatoes in the casserole. Serve it with mash if you like, but I often use rice.

SanityClause · 06/04/2015 17:05

I don't have mine with potatoes. I put white beans, like butter beans or canellini beans in it. I wouldn't serve it with anything, as there's loads of vegetables in mine, already.

Polenta sounds nice, though.
