How have I used £26 of mobile data while I was asleep? Anyone?

This is bizarre.

I forgot to turn my wifi back on on Friday when I got off the train (train wifi variable so at times best to turn off and use 3G to send messages)

My Vodafone app is updated to 8pm last night and I had used just under half my data allowance then, which is about right.

Overnight I have had a host of texts from Vodafone, approximately 20-30 minutes apart, to say I am close to my data allowance, I have gone over and spent £6.50 etc right up to £26 being spent at around 5.30 this morning.

I don't think I have automatic updates or anything on, so what on earth has happened? It's not a great disaster but it's a bit irritating!

I have had the same text this morning from voda. Odd!

SideOrderofChips · 05/04/2015 13:34

LIZS · 05/04/2015 13:35

Do you have any apps open like news , sport or weather?

MammaTJ · 05/04/2015 13:36

Sometimes smartphones constantly update themselves with email, facebook, app updates unless you turn it off.
£26 is a lot though!

GlitterTwinkleToes · 05/04/2015 13:38

Have you enabled your phone to roam whilst phone is inactive? Lots of apps do background roaming which bump data usaged up very quickly.

Don't do Facebook. Probably some apps open but no more than normal and I never exceed my data allowance. I've checked and auto updates are turned off. It's that same text mamma, but several of them and telling me I've spent £26.

The last thing I looked at was a link to a video DH sent me, it was still open but finished playing on a safari tab, video is 1.5 minutes long, it couldn't be something to do with that could it?

How do I check that glitter?

It's something specific last night in Thr middle of the night. Otherwise I would have exceeded my limit over Friday night, but I was well within the limit as of 8pm Saturday.

I forgot I was on mobile not wifI the other day and I ended up spending 20 pound watching a film that was 40 minutes!!! If you ring vodaphone and explain they might wipe it if you have been a customer for a long time!

RJnomore · 05/04/2015 13:41

Auto updates are and always have been turned off. I double checked.

I have all push notifications switched off on my phone (so only know i have email/facebook notifications etc if i actually check my email/facebook) and do not allow any background nonsense on any apps other than whatsapp (as it defeats the object of having it if no one can use it to contact me). Yet if i don't turn my data off at night then my phone is on the internet at least hourly if not more frequently. I don't need my phone to do this, if i am not awake it does not need to be. I find it really irritating as it uses up my data and my battery.

So every night i turn of data and wifi. That's outwitted the electronic git!

RJnomore · 05/04/2015 13:43

Data roaming is turned off if that's it, glitter? Am going through all my settings now.

GlitterTwinkleToes · 05/04/2015 13:48

Yes that sounds right to me. I would phone Vodaphone up as well, £26 is a lot to spend on internet if the phone was inactive. Did you hubby send you the video online or through a text?

RJnomore · 05/04/2015 13:52

He sent me the link in a text.

At 4.16 I was sent a text saying I had used my data allowance and at 5.36 I had spent £26.

I am looking at dd2 now - suspiciously.

It's possibly slightly delayed, I think my date usage updates after a few hours, so you may have used it all up on the train but there's a delay in notifying you? Not 100% sure though.

GlitterTwinkleToes · 05/04/2015 13:55

Link to video was on the internet? It could be possible but very unlikely IMO. 1hr 20min and a £26 charge, id be looking to change phone supplier, that's extortionate Shock

GlitterTwinkleToes · 05/04/2015 13:58

Id definitely be ringing vodaphone. £6.50 for 250mb, how have you supposed to have used 1gb (6.50x4 to get 26) in less than an hour and a half?

I was going to say exactly the same as Hovercraft about YouTube videos auto playing now.
