How have I used £26 of mobile data while I was asleep? Anyone?

This is bizarre.

I forgot to turn my wifi back on on Friday when I got off the train (train wifi variable so at times best to turn off and use 3G to send messages)

My Vodafone app is updated to 8pm last night and I had used just under half my data allowance then, which is about right.

Overnight I have had a host of texts from Vodafone, approximately 20-30 minutes apart, to say I am close to my data allowance, I have gone over and spent £6.50 etc right up to £26 being spent at around 5.30 this morning.

I don't think I have automatic updates or anything on, so what on earth has happened? It's not a great disaster but it's a bit irritating!

I haven't used it on the train. Th myvodafone app is accurate and shows that at 8pm last night, more than 24 hours after I got off the train, I had more than half my data llowance left.

Dd2 is being very shifty. I suspect she's been up using it to watch th nw series of my little pony during Thr night. I cannot find it in my Internet history though.

Thr video I had wasn't on YouTube - not sure quite what it is on actually - Vimeo perhaps?

I'm annoyed because I never exceed my data limit, even during Thr three month test drive with a new contract when I used 3G constantly and not wifi at all, I came in under the amount in my package.

If it was th video, someone must have closed it at 5.30 or I'd still have been using data until I got up and stopped it?

I had this, turns out I had an app on my phone that was constantly running and using all my data. Vodafone wouldn't wipe my charge as they sent a reminder that I was near my limit and when downloading apps it is my responsibility to read the small print.
Check your apps, if it helps the app I had was dice with buddies but it is these sort of games that constantly use your data.

GlitterTwinkleToes · 05/04/2015 14:14

That's really strange Hmm Could you ring Vodaphone to put a block on your phone to stop this happening again? And query how you've spent so much in such a short time (can they access the phone internet history?)

ouryve · 05/04/2015 14:20

OS update?

scissy · 05/04/2015 14:26

Are you on Android? I had an OTA update to the next OS version come through yesterday. That's separate to app settings I think so you'd have to turn it off somewhere else (if you can).

RJnomore · 05/04/2015 14:41

Nope, it's an iPhone. I'm really clueless - will need to go talk to vodafone.

Double click the home button on your phone, it will show you all the last pages visited & recent activity.

bloodyteenagers · 05/04/2015 15:27

To check your browser history. Open up safari on the phone, click the book at the bottom of the page - there u can see history, bookmarks and shared links. Doesn't show times, just Saturday, morning and evening type thing.

I always have my mobile data switched off unless I am out and about and need to access the internet. I just use Wi-Fi at home. Do most people leave their data switched on all the time?

reallybadidea · 05/04/2015 15:36

Yes, I leave mine switched on and use WiFi when at home. I've never had a problem doing this tbh.

confused79 · 05/04/2015 15:39

Do you have auto sync on? You know where it backs up everything, mine does it when I'm charging my phone which is usually at night.

Mandatorymongoose · 05/04/2015 17:07

Not much use now but if you go into your settings and look for mobile data / cellular data you can check how much is being used and by what apps. It never auto resets though so unless you've ever reset it it will show you the statistics for as long as you've used your phone.
If you remember to periodically reset the statistics though it would show up what suddenly used up a lot of data.

Theoretician · 05/04/2015 17:28

In Android it will tell you how much mobile and (separately) wifi data you've used in each one month period, and which apps used the data. Does iPhone not offer similar info?

SistersOfPercy · 05/04/2015 17:32

have you checked with Voda that it's not an error? I had something similar with EE a few months back, it was only when my BF had the same text we checked and EE admitted the texts had gone out to some users in error.

The cynic in me would think it was a marvellous way of getting people to pay for data they don't actually need.

Bunbaker · 05/04/2015 18:04

On my Android phone there is an option in settings - data usage - software update - restrict background data (disable background data on mobile network only. Wi-Fi will be used if available).

If you tick this box it means that your phone will only update on Wi-Fi networks, not on mobile data. One of my friends has an iPhone and had trouble with it updating on mobile data all the time. As she was on PAYG she was getting through £££ of data.

sockmatcher · 05/04/2015 18:19

Watching with interest. Do you really think it could be Dd2?

RebootYourEngine · 05/04/2015 20:06

I dont have the answer but why do people keep their data switched on? Isnt this why people get huge bills.

I have my data and my wifi turned off most of the time. Saves battery and money.

Fourarmsv2 · 05/04/2015 20:45

Thanks to this thread I've hopefully just worked out why my phone battery keeps draining. Crossy road! Kids play it and leave it open. Makes my phone heat up?!? Seems to use a lot of data, no idea how long this is measured over?

"I dont have the answer but why do people keep their data switched on? Isnt this why people get huge bills."

I don't get it either.
