To buy clothes to 'slim into'?

I saw some gorgeous trousers in the sale and knew that if only I owned those trousers all of my life would fall into place. But they were one size too small. I got them anyway and now I plan to lose weight.

The thing is, this has never worked for me before. There are lots of nice thin clothes in the world and I am still not thin. AIBU in thinking buying clothes too small ever works?

Yanbu. It's never worked for me.

Charitybelle · 24/03/2015 07:45

Even if you lose the weight, how do you know the trousers will fit nicely/be flattering on you? Shape and proportions matter a lot with trousers.

FuckingLiability · 24/03/2015 07:45

I never do this normally because it's pretty much guaranteed that you won't slim into them. Instead, they will hang in your wardrobe, staring accusingly at you whenever you open the door and you will end up giving them to a charity shop in two years' time, BNWT.

However.

I am in the process of losing weight (lost 2st, another 2st to go) and I bought two gorgeous dresses in January, so I decided to break my rule and keep them even when I realised they were too tight.

silverbangles66 · 24/03/2015 07:53

Well done you, Fucking

base9 · 24/03/2015 07:53

Not with trousers, no. I find that they need to fit just right and I can never tell exactly how losing half a stone will affect the fit.

FuckingLiability · 24/03/2015 08:02

Thanks silver! Bloody hard work though.

AddToBasket · 24/03/2015 08:03

But this time will be different...

Congratulations on how much you've lost, FL. How much more to go until the dresses fit?

I agree that slimming into clothes can be unsuccessful. I tend to feel rather discouraged if I 'fail' to slim into a garment, so buy when my clothes start to loosen up.

Keep going OP. Thanks

I got a dress to slim into 2 years ago with the aim of wearing it 12 months later. Within 6 months it was on eBay because I had lost a lot more weight than planned and it was too big.

If can work as a technique but only if you are in the right place to lose weight in the first place.

goodnessgraciousgouda · 24/03/2015 08:20

I think it's an awful plan of attack!!

Could you not just look online to try and find the trousers in your own size?

GertyD · 24/03/2015 08:21

I have a whole wardrobe that is 21 lbs out of reach. But I am losing weight and will do it. in 12 weeks too.

I can. I can. I can.

You need another incentive though, the trousers should be the reward but not the sole incentive. I am going away with my younger, slimmer and prettier sister, and am sick of looking like her frumpy mum Grin

alphabettyspaghetty · 24/03/2015 08:24

I bought some summer tops in the sale that were 2 sizes less than what I was. I'm now about 6 lb away from being able to wear them. Losing nearly 3 stone. got another 8 to go!

AnotherGirlsParadise · 24/03/2015 08:28

I had this with my wedding dress - it's an off the peg Monsoon number I got from eBay. It was either buy one I'd slim into, or get one that's a bit too big (only slightly though). I went with the bigger one, as I could get it altered, and knowing you have to try and slim into something can be really demoralising. I've never had much success with it either!

I understand not wanting to buy clothes in your actual size when you're actively losing weight though - it just seems like a waste of money when they'll probably be too big for you in a matter of weeks.

I have clothes in my wardrobe across at least three sizes.

I'm hoping that the trousers will spur me on. Lovely neat cut wool strides.

I have 2 pairs of trews and a dress waiting for me to fit into them. Must.Stop.Doing.This.

I hope you manage it OP.

formerbabe · 24/03/2015 09:26

I have 15 pairs of jeans I have never worn because they are too small...I haven't given up hope though....one day.....

TeaAfficionado · 24/03/2015 09:27

I have just bought a coat in the sales which definitely does not fit (I am 36 weeks pregnant but I'm not 100% sure it would have fitted pre-bump although it alleges to be my size). But it is so soft and lovely that I will spurn all chocolate after the baby's arrival so I can wear it (this will not happen as evidenced by my previous attempts to motivate weight loss with clothes...).

In short, I feel your pain. Maybe this time we will be victorious!

Offler · 24/03/2015 09:38

I'm not buying clothes I can slim into at the moment, I just want to slim enough to fit into all the slim clothes I already have!!

I've lost 2 stones since January 12th so far and have another 10lb to get to target. (I may splurge on some new clothes for my up and coming 40th in 6 weeks time...)

DoJo · 24/03/2015 09:43

I bought some jeans online before Christmas that turned out to be too small by accident. I kept them and resolved not to buy any others (a bit risky as the ones that it me had started to develop holes!) and now they not only fit but actually have wiggle room in them. Not sure I'll buy the next size down just yet, but it was a good incentive when I realised that, even though I couldn't really see the difference, it was definitely there!

I have three pairs of Next relaxed skinny jeans in a size too small. They changed the fabric and fit so I bought these in a panic from the clearance site because I wouldn't be able to get the 'right' ones any more.

DayLillie · 24/03/2015 10:39

YABU. Buy something that makes you feel good. Then you are more likely to lose the weight. Then buy something else that makes you feel good.

If you buy it and keep it in the wardrobe, it will become boring/out of season/date and there will be other nicer things in the shops. Smile

AddToBasket · 24/03/2015 10:44

15 pairs of jeans Shock! Are they all the same size themselves?

DoJo, that is great about the wiggle room. Fitting with wiggle room is my ambition.

I bought summer trousers in the M&S sale two summers ago in a size too small. The didn't fit last summer but fit now, except it's too cold to wear them. I hope they will be too big by summer!

RandomNPC · 24/03/2015 11:09

I've kept a pair of jeans shorts I could get into when I was 20. They are horrible, but I wil fit into them again one day
