To buy clothes to 'slim into'?

I saw some gorgeous trousers in the sale and knew that if only I owned those trousers all of my life would fall into place. But they were one size too small. I got them anyway and now I plan to lose weight.

The thing is, this has never worked for me before. There are lots of nice thin clothes in the world and I am still not thin. AIBU in thinking buying clothes too small ever works?

I am doing Race4Life in July so started running and calorie counting in January and the other day saw some skinny jeans in the next sale reduced to £12. I bought them thinking it'll be another month before I get into them and tried them on to see how far I had to go, and they fit. So on that basis I would say if you really intend to lose weight YANBU.

If you aren't YABU

financialwizard · 24/03/2015 11:15

Should say they were my benchmark jeans, now I am going to have to buy a size smaller. The size smaller is where I want to be by Christmas.

cathyandclaire · 24/03/2015 11:20

I find buying something too small that I love is a huge incentive to get in shape...but only if i have a specific event that I plan to wear it to. I need to set a deadline, so plan where and when you want to wear your lovely trousers so you know what to aim for.

TheAssassinsGuild · 24/03/2015 11:23

I'm sorry but YABU Sad. Unless you were already successfully losing weight, finding whatever it is you were doing for weight loss manageable and pretty stress free, and it was reasonable to expect that you would soon fit into the too small clothes.

EponasWildDaughter · 24/03/2015 11:31

I've been losing/gaining the same stupid one or two stone for so many years that i'm even bored with myself over it. The highs and lows of weight loss gain are ridiculous. I sympathise OP.

I have two whole black sacks of clothes which are too small or revealing for me at my current weight. Winter and summer stuff. I should hurl it all out as it's presence at the back of the wardrobe depresses me. But i know how much i spent on it all and it's good stuff!

I've been hovering around my current, heavier weight for about 3 years now and have been 'determined to get into my slim clothes again' for the whole of it Hmm

I've had a baby in the middle of those 3 years, and haven't changed shape or lost or gained much actual weight at all, which at my age is pretty good. But if only i'd been that magic 20lb lighter at the outset it would have been even better ...

Slimfast'ing at the mo. 7 days in. This time it WILL work.

FuzzyHeaded · 24/03/2015 11:31

Not feeling well so I can't figure out whether YANBU or YABU is the correct response grammatically speaking! Blush But having clothes that don't fit hanging around certainly doesn't work for me.

I have a handful of (gorgeous, amazing sale bargains) dresses and skirts which I bought when I first started university. In the intervening years I have, as my DH puts it, become more 'womanly' and in my heart of hearts I know I will never fit into them again - when I work out loads my bum doesn't slim down, it goes muscly and bulks up! I also love food so whilst I eat sensibly I would find it very hard to go on an all-out diet for the sake of slimming down.

Every time I look at these items of clothing at the bottom of my wardrobe I feel grumpy and annoyed with my body. So why the heck do I keep them?!

Years ago I bought a trendy pair of jeans, not to slim into, but in the naive delusion that they would actually fit. They obviously didn't, and I came out of my denial about how fat I'd got.

I kept those jeans, vowing that one day I'd get into them. They sneered at me every fecking time I opened the wardrobe door.

Eventually though, that day came- success!
Couldn't wear them..hideously unfashionable.

alteredbeast · 24/03/2015 12:49

I bought my wedding dress a size too small ten years ago and slimmed into it!

Now that was risky!

Starlightbright1 · 24/03/2015 13:01

I got fed up with my jeans not fitting so bought 1 pair. I can say that I have now lost weight so my one pair of jeans are getting loose.

I also have plenty clothes that have fit and now don't...Losing weight though doesn't always come off where you want but good luck

irretating · 24/03/2015 13:14

I think this can work if you already have weightloss as a goal. I found that a next size down item of clothing worked for me. I had some old jeans that I wore pre-baby and it was nice going from, not being able to get them over my arse, to over my arse but not doing up, to doing up but muffin top, to no muffin top - hurrah!.

Wigglykitten · 24/03/2015 13:15

I've lost 3 stone and have another 2 to go. When I started my diet I bought a beautiful summer dress in the sales (not expensive but lovely), and I WILL be wearing it this summer. I've also got a suitcase of smaller clothes from 12 years ago under my spare bed, I think they will all be hideously out of date when the time comes, but I'm just looking forward to trying them all on and having them fit.

irretating · 24/03/2015 13:15

Losing weight though doesn't always come off where you want but good luck

ain't that the truth!

nennyrainbow · 24/03/2015 20:57

Slightly on a tangent, but I bought baby clothes, specifically baby girls' clothes, when I wasn't even pregnant, just because they were gorgeous and going cheap! Had to hide them away or everyone would think I was crazy.Blush
A few years later, I did get my baby girl, and yes, she did wear them. So I'd say go for it / YANBU.

rollonthesummer · 24/03/2015 21:01

and knew that if only I owned those trousers all of my life would fall into place.

I know that feeling!! Good luck with the slimming process! :)

dun1urkin · 24/03/2015 22:52

I bought some too small trousers, put them away in the spare wardrobe and sort of forgot about them. When I got them out thinking 'they'll fit now" they were too big Hmm What a muppet. They were lovely as well... just not as small as I thoughtGrin

JaceLancs · 25/03/2015 01:22

I have clothes in many sizes due to yo yo dieting for most of my adult life
Recently lost 4 stone but aiming for another 4
I hang a nearly could fit into pair of jeans on my bedroom door and try them on once a week when I weigh myself
Works for me
Some weeks I squeeze myself into them and daren't breathe but just strengthens my resolve

victoryinthekitchen · 25/03/2015 06:26

YANBU. I have jeans that I can fasten but I can't bend, move or breathe in, does that count as fitting? :D I also have a lovely Brora dress that is a size too small and I can't bend, move or breathe in it, but one day I will ....

I just brought a coat in the sale. It's lovely and I tried it on in my current size several weeks ago but couldn't justify the cost. I dreamt about this coat though - perfect style, perfect colour, perfect everything.

Then they had a sale with 70% off but didn't have it in my size. So I've brought a size down.

I have successfully slimmed into clothes before. I've also ended up getting rid of clothes that never fitted and I went off ...

I will wear this cost though ... I will!

ohtheholidays · 25/03/2015 08:25

It didn't work for me in the past. But a couple of weeks ago I bought a beautiful dress that is 3 sizes(well more like 2 and a half now)to small. It's for the summer and I will wear it this year(said through gritted teeth)in the summer holidays.

But this time I am getting there,I am loosing weight.Good Luck OP,hope you loose what you want and look great in the trousers.
