Niamhisnotarealname · 17/03/2015 20:45

Or is it just me?

Iv just been invited to an online 'trunk show' and I cannot believe that people buy such ugly jewelry and accessories for such high prices!

Needless to say, I wont be buying anything.

You can get nicer stuff for a third of the price in New Look IMO

Niamhisnotarealname · 17/03/2015 20:53

I know, this is what I thought! Everyone at work is raving about it for some reason :/

If you don't like the design, fine, but S&D really lasts. If you like a gold finish, it really does last. I've bought gold finished stuff from New Look and the like and its lasted 2 wears and given me a rash. So regarding design, if you don't like it, don't buy it, but if you want costume jewellery that lasts, it is really nice. The Birdie necklace is lush and so is the Havanna (if I have the name right) and both convert in terms of length and decorative elements.

TattyDevine · 17/03/2015 20:55

Not everyone likes the "statement necklace" look by the way, which is fine, but it somehow suits my sense of style. If you want a lovely delicate single stone or charm pendant or something, try Etsy for something unique.

TattyDevine · 17/03/2015 20:57

Oh, and people who like gold tone but a proper real looking gold that lasts, search on Etsy for something called "gold filled". Its also known as "rolled gold" but the findings and chain is quite affordable in the US and there are some really talented designers and makers who make lovely stuff using gold filled findings and chain. This stuff will potentially last you a lifetime and looks and acts like 9ct. Less of a problem for lovers of silver - much easier to find affordable lasting stuff in a silver tone or even sterling silver.

Niamhisnotarealname · 17/03/2015 20:58

Are you a 'stylist' tattydevine?

OP posts:
TattyDevine · 17/03/2015 21:01

No, I'm obviously the founder of Etsy though Wink

BabyGanoush · 17/03/2015 21:01

I don't rate Stella and Dot at all

Bit like kid's jewellery

fatnan76 · 17/03/2015 21:08

I've always wondered if this:

www.tattydevine.com/

is the reason Tatty know what she's talking about!

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 17/03/2015 21:11

Of course it is!

Missdread · 17/03/2015 21:13

Oh I know! I got invited to a party and shoved a tenner in my back pocket for a pair of earrings. When I got there a) the stuff was gawdy and b) rather worryingly there were no prices in the catalogue. The cheapest thing there was about £50!!!! I had to make my excuses about how money was tight and leave!!! Blush Blush Blush Blush Blush

TattyDevine · 17/03/2015 21:13

Oh yeah, great stuff, please buy the whole website Grin

SistersOfPercy · 17/03/2015 21:16

Are you the the real tatty!? Wow, honoured. I have always loved and adored your work and have always wanted a name necklace Grin

TattyDevine · 17/03/2015 21:17

More jewellery ranting/frothing

If you like rose gold, but can't afford 9ct, look for "rose gold vermeil" on NotOnTheHighStreet or Etsy (a lot of etsy comes from the US so be patient for delivery, usually within 10 days and only gets a customs charge about 25% of the time).

It will be solid sterling silver dipped in rose gold, many many times the thickness of gold "plate" or electroplate, and will last well and be polished up again and again. Fraction of the cost of 9ct.

I'm a gold lover but you can't always buy the real thing, if you want to chop and change, but it is really disappointing to buy something from the high street only to wear it once or twice. (This of course depends on whether it touches your skin - so earrings etc are a no go for me). A long pendant type piece tends to last longer as it is worn over your clothes.

TattyDevine · 17/03/2015 21:18

Oh I was joking Sisters darling sorry, no, I'm not the real Tatty at all. Sorry! I love all things jewellery though Grin

Sorry I wasn't really trying to make out I was the real Tatty (whoever that is - I think its a duo actually?)

expatinscotland · 17/03/2015 21:20

YANBU

Jjcrackers · 17/03/2015 21:23

Totally. Got conned into buying a necklace at a trunk show. £85 and it looks like it comes from Claire's accessories.

Was too embarrassed to send it back.

Gah

Niamhisnotarealname · 17/03/2015 21:26

I actually really like some of that tattydevine stuff! Thanks for the name drop, I would never have known otherwise :)

I've namechanged for this post as I dont want to out myself but I couldn't resist commenting on how irritating I find this company.

I'm a member of a large local email group for locals (mostly parents) to swap advice, recommend services and to sell things. Unfortunately our local Stella and Dot 'personal stylist' sends out unwanted marketing crap all the time. It's really intrusive and as its part of an email group it's not possible to opt out.

Its rude to spam everybody like that. I'd refuse to buy any of their overpriced products on principle.

They might think it's good free advertising but they should understand that it actively puts people off buying from them.

Caravanoflove · 17/03/2015 22:04

I live in a village that is dripping with money and is saturated with stella and dot stylists. I too think it's overpriced plastic and you can get similar in primary but the yummies seem to love it!

improbablesaint · 17/03/2015 22:05

i love it
lasts really long too . I get SO many comps abotu my renegade bracelet

You dont have to buy it

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 17/03/2015 22:07

"Stella and dot stylists"

Are these the new Avon and Tupperware ladies?

improbablesaint · 17/03/2015 22:09

oh i just buy online or on ebay
i dont do ' parties' of anything unless booze

StrawberryTallCake · 17/03/2015 22:14

Tatty Is much better, I have a name necklace and it is hopefully almost past being post sex and the city - name necklace cliche acceptable for most but then I don't care so much because I love it.

Clarinet9 · 17/03/2015 22:19

it is the old cupcake bunting thing isn't it?
I am alway astounded at the money people will pay (whilst secretly wanting to effortlessly run and profit from a very similar thing Grin)
