Posting here for traffic. Picked my dd (7) up from school yesterday , generally unwell , fever and complaining of mild sore throat and headache. Ate toast etc fine and wanted to play etc. Dosed up with call and brighter.
This am fever still, headache slightly worse with inconsistent pain at back of neck and to begin with photophobia but this decreased and now ok. Slight rash on upper thighs .....bright ish , eating toast
Am I bring a drama queen to be worried about meningitis? ?? DH thinks wait til GP opens at 8.30 and take her there as nearest hospital an hour away .......

Call NHS direct or whatever it's called now?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 11/03/2015 05:35

Id go A&E. Maybe call nhs direct first?

SpottedTent · 11/03/2015 05:37

Maybe try ringing 111 first? They'll ask you to do the glass test over the rash so might be worth doing that first. Hope your DD is better soon Flowers

clairecasta · 11/03/2015 05:37

check NHS symptom checker first

timeforabrewnow · 11/03/2015 05:37

What's her temperature? Is the temp responding to calpol?

Alfiedoggy · 11/03/2015 05:41

Rash really difficult to say if blanches as quite faint anyway. Fever not responsive to calpol. The only thing stopping me is I thought a child with meningitis would be really poorly ?? But I've never had her complain of headache before

Call nhs24

AuntieDee · 11/03/2015 05:46

A&E now - I know they say to look for a rash but a rash is the last symptom to appear and if it has got that far you're talking potential amputations. I really don't want to scare you but meningitis isn't something you should be 'wait and see'ing about.

BTW I'm the sort who normally discourages people from going to A&E

momwhereismy · 11/03/2015 05:46

Go now.

Alfiedoggy · 11/03/2015 05:47

Ok I'm calling 111 get advice if they're useless 999 or drive her myself ? Xx

Call an ambulance. You said your nearest hospital is an hour away. You may need medical attention more urgently than that.

clairecasta · 11/03/2015 05:50

You can call 111 but they'll probably send you an ambulance about 5 mins into the call anyway.

AuntieDee · 11/03/2015 05:51

Alfiedoggy

I hope we are overreacting and your daughter is OK. You're doing the right thing x

OP posts:
gamerwidow · 11/03/2015 06:38

Has she got very cold hands and feet? This would be warning sign before the rash developed. Hope she is ok.

Oodbrain · 11/03/2015 06:43

How is she today?

clairecasta · 11/03/2015 06:47

If anything changes and you aren't happy, call 111 again. Good luck @ GP's.

Alfiedoggy · 11/03/2015 06:48

base9 · 11/03/2015 06:51

Good. Go to a&e. That is best.

MrsFrankieHeck · 11/03/2015 06:52

I would take her to the GP, hope she's feeling better soon.

lougle · 11/03/2015 06:55

I agree with 111 from your description. The non blanching rash in meningitis is actually bleeding beneath the skin. If you're struggling to tell if it's blanching because it's so pale anyway then it's most likely a blanching rash.

Pain in the neck can be present in lots of viral illnesses. What you need to be aware of us whether there is neck stiffness. Can she bend her neck to put her chin in her chest?

If you're really worried you could go to the surgery just before opening time so that you're seen straight away.

pushmepullyou · 11/03/2015 06:56

Good luck to luck Smile. I have has meningitis and I definitely wouldn't expect her to be chatting and eating toast if that is what it was. The head and neck pain were agonising - couldn't touch my chin to my chest, temp of 41 etc. Try not to worry too much Smile

Boomf · 11/03/2015 07:04

I'd probably take the advice you've been given tbh. Sounds like a virus to me
