Posting here for traffic. Picked my dd (7) up from school yesterday , generally unwell , fever and complaining of mild sore throat and headache. Ate toast etc fine and wanted to play etc. Dosed up with call and brighter.
This am fever still, headache slightly worse with inconsistent pain at back of neck and to begin with photophobia but this decreased and now ok. Slight rash on upper thighs .....bright ish , eating toast
Am I bring a drama queen to be worried about meningitis? ?? DH thinks wait til GP opens at 8.30 and take her there as nearest hospital an hour away .......

Please don't call an ambulance! Some of the responses in mumsnet are irresponsible for a supposedly intelligent site.

FishWithABicycle · 11/03/2015 07:21

I think you're right to go to a&e - a mum's gut feeling is more likely to be accurate than than the computer of a call centre worker. Even if it turns out to be nothing serious that doesn't make it wrong to get her seen asap when you're this worried

Sleepytea · 11/03/2015 07:21

I hope she's ok. There's a lot of scarlet fever going round at the moment - could it be that?

Missymum6 · 11/03/2015 07:24

Just caught your post good luck hope all is well. Hopefully it's just this horrible virus thats going around and nothing worse xx xx

DishwasherDogs · 11/03/2015 07:24

She's brightish and eating toast - have people not read that bit?
Seriously, no need for A&E or an ambulance (and seriously, are there people out there who would ring an ambulance when their child is bright and eating toast? The mind boggles)
Sounds like 111 have made the right call. Hope your dd is feeling better soon.

GermaineHobnob · 11/03/2015 07:24

YY I wondered about Scarlet fever. You can get rashes from just a virus too though so hopefully it is that. Hope she's ok OP.

WipsGlitter · 11/03/2015 07:27

EmmaJacksonHarley · 11/03/2015 07:32

LittleBearPad · 11/03/2015 08:07

Glad you spoke to 111. Can she move her neck? If so it isn't likely to be meningitis.

I also agree with dishwasherdogs.

PurpleDaisies · 11/03/2015 08:19

As a bit of reassurance, the 111 hotline errs on the side of sending everyone to a and e just to be on the safe side so if they're telling you to go to the gp then that's the best place for you. From the symptoms you've described that sounds absolutely appropriate. True neck stiffness associated with meningitis is completely different from a bit of neck pain that's gone away but I can see why you're worried. Probably just a virus but seeing the gp is probably a good idea.

Get well soon to your daughter.

I had a very similar situation with my 10 month DS last week - temp hit 39.8 with a sparse but very definite non-blanching rash. He was very chirpy, eating etc but took him to GP just in case.

GP sent us urgently to A&E who (after a 12 hour wait) did absolutely nothing. The three different docs / registrars who saw him all said that someone will be very very sick with meningitis. Not chirpy. Or eating toast. It did put my mind somewhat as I'm obsessive about the DC and meningitis since my DM had it.

LittleFluffyMoo · 11/03/2015 22:26

I work for the NHS and would always err on the side of caution regarding possible meningitis.

Trust your instincts - if they are obviously more sleepy or floppy than normal, you know your child better than anyone. No-one is going to think any less of you in A & E for taking your child there to get it checked out, whether it turns out to be something or not. That is, after all, our job.

The non-blanching rash usually happens quite late in meningitis, so don't rely on that as an indicator. However, I would say that a good indicator against is sitting up and happily eating toast!

custardismyhamster · 11/03/2015 22:37

I'm sure on occasions like this a&e would rather send home a non seriously ill child than deal with one really really sick as wasn't brought in quick enough
