Two syllables, hard consonant sound in the middle?

Dr0pThePirate · 09/03/2015 15:45

Of course it is!

How have you been hearing it pronounced?

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 15:47

The 'lil boy', 'lil girl' brigade are growing. They are even on here now.

Is it supposed to be cute? It looks utterly illiterate and twee to boot.

Disclaimer: I am knackered and grumpy (but I'm pretty sure it would be annoying me hugely even if I weren't)

PS I'm in the grumpy knackered club myself

BeeRayKay · 09/03/2015 15:56

Blegh. Hate it.

Along with:

R Gawjus lil man
Lil Man
Sexy baby

BetweenDogandWolf · 09/03/2015 15:56

Yes.
Another word is 'and' not 'an'. And 'have' not 'av'.

Hmm, that is most irksome.

I remember back in the 90's that daft man, Chris Evans, tried to get everyone to say "little" as "ikle" or something like that. It's never really gone away.

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 15:58

Yeah what's that 'an' thing? It saves one letter and who can't spell 'and'!? Hmm

Gawjus I'm almost immune to now. Tragically Sad Shock

ItsMeShh · 09/03/2015 15:59

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 15:59

My lito lady.
My lito man.

ItsMeShh · 09/03/2015 16:04

Why, why, why 'an' instead of 'and' ?

It's ONE LETTER, and it's probably one of the first words you learnt to spell FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!

StrawberryCheese · 09/03/2015 16:04

Lito???

I'm lucky to have mainly scottish people on my FB. It's full of wee bairns not lil men Grin

Dr0pThePirate · 09/03/2015 16:06

Ok this one really annoys me but it sounds very anti-American so I'm not totally comfortable banging on about it but I swear to god it's true.

Ok, here it is…I like Americans by the way…sometimes Americans (usually young), when writing, can't tell the difference between than and then Shock Blush. They're used interchangeably.

[I swear I've seen this don't hate me emoticon]

Shouldn't that be Li'l ?

HemanOrSheRa · 09/03/2015 16:10

My sister in law uses 'wiv' or 'wid' and 'de' in texts and on FB. Drives me insane.

My neighbour sent me a friend request which I foolishly accepted. I now get a constant stream of posts about her cute lil baby girls. They are 4 and 6. She uses 'hun' alot too. 'You Ok Hun? PM me Hun X'. Grrrrr.

ItsMeShh · 09/03/2015 16:10

I'm pretty sure that's not just the Americans Dr0pThePirate you may be off the hook.

Also not knowing the difference between women and woman, e.g. 'this women just bagsied a table in Starbuck's'

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 16:13

I haven't seen 'lito' either. This thread is giving me more things to potentially get grumpy about Hmm

I do like wee bairns, though Smile

SmashleyHop · 09/03/2015 16:17

Nope... No defending that.

Suzannewithaplan · 09/03/2015 16:18

isnt it just dialect?
speaking in a way which aligns you with a certain social group.

The fact that you shudder and cringe when you read it surely just tells you that these are not people with whom you can comfortably align yourself?
