Two syllables, hard consonant sound in the middle?

Ooh Smashley come back I've always wanted to ask an American about this one,

We Brits say 'I couldn't care less' when expressing I don't give a shit.

Americans tend to say 'I could care less' in the same context

What's the logic behind that one (I'm not meaning to be rude just curious how it sounds in your head as it were)

NotMyUserName · 09/03/2015 16:23

StrawberryCheese I'm also Scottish and the lito lady, lito man and litto princess were all written by other Scottish people.

I always use "weans" on FB, it's what I say in real life.

MehsMum · 09/03/2015 16:23

Gawjus? Gawjus!

What fresh hell.... I have NEVER come across that before.

SmashleyHop · 09/03/2015 16:24

I say I couldn't care less- I'm with the Brits on this one. I could care less seems awkward.

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 16:26

But suzanne, the 'lil' thing is now on MN, in otherwise sensible literate posts.

It's taken on a life of its own.

OP posts:
Suzannewithaplan · 09/03/2015 16:31

Arsenic, just give it a bit of time and 'lil' will be akin to 'gawjus' and 'r u ok hun'
those not of that ilk will no longer use it for fear of being taken as the type who express themselves in that fashion

SoupDragon · 09/03/2015 16:33

'lil boy'

I'm sure this has never happened.

It's 'ill man surely...?

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 16:33

Promise?

OP posts:
KellyElly · 09/03/2015 16:33

Better than 'Lickle', that makes my teeth itch!

SoupDragon · 09/03/2015 16:34

'Lil. Not ill you stupid bloody autocorrect.

Suzannewithaplan · 09/03/2015 16:34

I've wondered about 'I could care less'
is it perhaps along the lines of 'I could care less but not much less'
or is there some sarcasm?

Suzannewithaplan · 09/03/2015 16:37

I think it also depends on the accent.
If said (read) in a 'Gail Tuesday, page free moddle' accent it is unpleasant

but perhaps less so in a Penelope Pittstop lil ole me American accent?

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 16:37

Yes, Suzanne I think US southerners can pull it off, but how many do we have here? There aren't many on my FB.

Nevermind. Maybe everyone will read this and start writing proper.

OP posts:
PseudoBadger · 09/03/2015 16:42

If I ask a particular friend a question via text and she's happy with it, she will reply with 'K'. Arrrggh.

Adarajames · 09/03/2015 16:43

'Lickle' makes me irrationally violent and I have to restrain myself from screaming obscenities at the speaker and smashing their face in whisky repeatedly yelling ITS LITTLE!!!!!!! Angry

And breath...

Writerwannabe83 · 09/03/2015 16:43

Where I live some women say the word 'bockle' instead of bottle when referring to a baby's bottle.

"Is it time for his bockle? Does he want a bockle of milk?"

It makes me want to scream!!!!!

Adarajames · 09/03/2015 16:44

Whilst not whisky!! Sometimes autocorrect also makes me want to scream!

Shockers · 09/03/2015 16:45

I wrote l'il on Facebooksomething this morning.

Shouldn't that be Li'l ?

Shockers is too busy self flagellating with a thorny branch to comment.

Arsenic · 09/03/2015 16:45

I thought whisky sounded a bit generous Grin

M00nUnit · 09/03/2015 17:07

I'm seeing "then" used instead of "than" (e.g. "I'm better then all of you") more and more recently, but British people as well as Americans. Also saw it done by an Australian the other day. So annoying!

NormHonal · 09/03/2015 17:10

YANBU.

I'm seeing a lot of "Lil" too and it makes me vomit in my mouth a little

ilovesooty · 09/03/2015 17:11

I've seen lil on here. It's bad enough on Facebook.

I hate "little man" anyway, even typed in full.

QOD · 09/03/2015 17:12

"I'm so proud of are Lil men. There so good for they're teachers"
