To really dislike the term 'tolerant' and its modern usage.

Usually used these days to describe Muslims or sometimes other religions, or rather the rest of societies view of them.

Some religious/cultural practises/views I will never tolerate, FGM, bombing abortion clinics, forced marriage, treating daughters very differently to sons. I will not hold my tongue on these things.

Other stuff, dressing differently, not eating pork, fasting for Ramadan, not having an abortion yourself. Why would I not agree with it or feel it's something I don't like but put up with, I'm completely indifferent to any of that stuff. I don't need to be tolerant of these things because there's nothing to tolerate.

IMO it makes it sound as though some sections of society are doing something we disapprove of, or should disapprove of, and aren't the rest of us great for allowing them this freedom.

it just means that you accept the existence of these things, it doesn't mean you approve of or agree with them.

Putting up with something you don't like.

By modern usage I mean always attached to Muslims.

It is the difference between tolerance and acceptance.
You tolerate a bad smell, you don't accept it.
That is why I don't like 'we need to tolerate gay people' etc.
I don't want tolerance, I want acceptance.

As for all those horrible practices you listed, of course they are not religious practices, where in the bible does it say you should harass abortion clinics? In fact abortion is not even referred to in the bible.

Likewise FGM, forced marriage, treating daughters very differently to sons are cultural practices, in some cases going against the teachings of the religion of the people involved.

Are you saying we should not merely "tolerate" people with different views to us because to tolerate can imply you don't like them really but put up with it because you have to or are you saying you shouldn't have to tolerate anything you don't like/agree with/believe and they should all piss off elsewhere?

Example, covering the hair, why would anyone dislike or disagree with somebody doing this, it's not something we have to tolerate, because there is nothing in that to tolerate. imo

Politicians are always (slight exaggeration) going on about what a tolerant nation we are in relation to Muslims.

I think OP is speaking about religious and cultural extremism in general, I haven't heard of any Islamic extremists bombing abortion clinics, the cases I can think of which relate to this kind of terrorism have been Christian extremists. Of course there should be no tolerance of FGM, bombing abortion clinics, forced marriage, or treating daughters less favourably than sons, I don't think many people are arguing that there should be though.

I'm with OP on this one...to 'tolerate' seems to currently mean 'to put up with in spite of the fact that I dislike it'. I think the OP is trying to say that 'tolerate' is not the right word, because she will never tolerate the stuff she disagrees with (FGM etc) and doesn't have to tolerate the stuff she doesn't have an opinion on. How can you tolerate halal if you don't have a problem with it, for example?

I would argue that the word does us a disservice. It looks like we disagree with something, when we don't. Or looks like we won't take a stand over something we believe is wrong.

It's just not the right word when applied to religion. I don't tolerate other religions, I accept them. I enjoy them. I enjoy learning about them. That does not make me tolerant.

Actually as a nation we have been very tolerant of FGM. I heard a radio programme about it saying that the UK is regarded by some as a 'safe place to cut'.

I disagree that our nation is tolerant of FGM.

FGM has been banned in the UK since 1985, it continues to be widely practised, with not a single successful prosecution to date. How would you describe our country's attitude to it?

One must have evidence to bring a successful prosecution.

The communities who practice FGM in the UK do not give those who carry it out.

Lack of prosecutions is due to lack of evidence, not because the nation tolerates it.

The word tolerate is not usually used to describe Muslims at all. I tend to hear the word most in relation to children's behaviour.

But no one is expecting you to tolerate bombings, or FGM, or forced marriage. Most people, including Muslims, are against those things.
