AIBU to think 'like' buttons on MN might be a good idea?

I sometimes really like a post and want to show appreciation without adding to the thread just to say "I agree with Bigboobies/Ineedwine"

I agree I often want to agree (!) but wouldn't it just make the thread a bit lazy? Now, if you want to agree you actually have to say so and might well add an interesting (or otherwise!) comment too.

I think if you can't find a few seconds to say you agree with someone, you're probably not that bothered either way.

No - never. Just leads to long threads with lots of 'likes' on them & cuts down on witty discussion/bunfights.

nope - you'd then get the passive aggressive "like" - like on facebook where someone disagrees and loads of people pile in and "like" the disagreeing post without explaining themselves or thinking of the original poster who now feels a bit shit because everyone disagrees but no one explains why...

I think it would be a good idea. I've recently made my acquaintance with the Gluezilla saga. Four threads, 146 pages, and a lot of posts were agreements or '"you go girl!" type comments. I Ctrl+F'd the OPs name (TidyDancer) so I could fasttrack to any updates and sometimes the thread would go on for a couple of pages without any input from OP. On thread 4 TidyDancer didn't make an appearance until the seventh or eighth page.

I think you'd just end up with people 'liking' instead of contributing and it would make mn really dull.

And you'd have endless bunfights and snarling about posters getting lots of likes because of arselicking and popularity and bitterness if some people got lots of likes but you didn't and it'd just be awful.

Not every place on the internet has to be the same, with the tickers and the likes and the quoting.

Sometimes less is more.

No I think it would be a bad idea. There would be threads all about who was the most liked poster. I was on a craft site that had like and not like buttons. And people came on incensed. What's not to like about my post. And then there'd be a row. No. A bad idea.

OP, do you know how to highlight the OPs posts? That way when you scroll through a long thread (and you can also make it so all posts are shown on one page so no constant page changing) the OPs posts are a different colour and it makes following the narrative much easier?

No. The highlight OP function means you can whizz through a thread if you want to. Liking a post is lazy and doesn't add to this discussion.

Nope it would be a popularity contest.. at least now when our post isn't acknowledged we know most others aren't too unless the poster is specifically mentioned.
