To not take DD to the GP/A&E until Monday

So DD (15) has a had a bog standard cold, so had Friday off school, much to her horror as she has three internal assessments due next week.

But now she has an awful cough that she cannot rid of and every time she tries to speak she starts dry coughing, this has happened before with most colds and the cough lingers for weeks, if not months, so the GP have always just put her on something similar to an asthma inhaler (she has sports induced asthma).

The problem is the inhaler we received last time has run out of puffs, so I will have to take her to A&E but I live abroad where we have to pay for healthcare and it costs $50 to go to A&E but I can't really afford it at the moment and the GP would only be about $20 on the Monday. If I can't get her in on the Monday, I will take her to A&E.

I feel bad though she's going to spend the whole weekend in bed with a mountain of homework to do. AIBU?

I think I'd have to be very very poor before I'd consider not seeking medical treatment for my children when they needed it. Sorry.

glampinggaloshes · 20/02/2015 22:23

Tell me you're kidding. Your daughter can't breathe. She's not getting enough oxygen. You're either stupid, negligent or winding us up. ffs get off your mean little backside now and take her to a and e. It's a priority.

Boomf · 20/02/2015 22:24

You are going to get flamed to fuck

Take her to the doctor FGS

Boomf · 20/02/2015 22:25

If she really can't speak without dry coughing and she relies on an inhaler then you are beyond unreasonable

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 20/02/2015 22:25

Try a pharmacy. It's child neglect not to get medical help for your child when they need it. Are there no cheaper options? Walk in centre? Out of hours GP?

glampinggaloshes · 20/02/2015 22:25

And never let her run out of inhalers again. This has happened before you say. You have no excuse.

CheeseandGherkins · 20/02/2015 22:25

Asthma can kill. Take her to the drs! Why let her suffer?

Notrevealingmyidentity · 20/02/2015 22:25

Surely it will cost you more long term if she gets worse though ?

Totality22 · 20/02/2015 22:26

We're talking about a difference of $30?

Jeez.... get your poor child to hospital woman.

Sirzy · 20/02/2015 22:26

She is showing asthma symptoms. Asthma kills.

If you think it's worth risking her life for $30 then that's your choice

Jaffacakesareyummy · 20/02/2015 22:27

Hmm YABVU

glampinggaloshes · 20/02/2015 22:27

I can't follow this thread. I have had a daughter in hospital with pneumonia before Xmas. She couldn't breathe either. It started with a cough. She was on oxygen for days. You are appalling

noddyholder · 20/02/2015 22:29

Just take her fgs and cut back somewhere else

nocoolnamesleft · 20/02/2015 22:29

Please, please, don't leave this. Some of this winter's viral bugs are hitting asthmatics hard. Even people who normally have pretty mild asthma. The longer you leave starting treatment, the more likely it is she will get worse. I'm assuming that if she ended up needing admission it would be even more expensive... I am a very strong believer in having an inhaler (preferably with spacer, and I'm assuming salbutamol or similar) handy in the house, so that it can be started at the first sign of trouble, as that so often avoids things getting worse (or at least helps keep the kid safe in the meantime).

And I really really hate trying to stabilise asthmatic kids who should have started treatment sooner....

glampinggaloshes · 20/02/2015 22:30

You realise dry coughing is not breathing do you. It's failure to get oxygen in asthmatics. It's crashing of SATS. Your heart beats out of control to compensate. Sort it out now for fucks sake!!!

LifeHuh · 20/02/2015 22:30

Yabu, . I don't think it's reasonable to make your DD spend a whole weekend unable to breathe properly regardless of the homework issue ( though that makes sorting it even more necessary)
Presumably if your DD has exercise induced asthma she needs her inhaler regularly for this? I think a visit to A&E this time is the price you pay for losing track of how many doses were left, annoying but these things do happen.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/02/2015 22:34

Are you serious. beg borrow steal sell your dirty underwear on e bay but fgs get her to a Dr. asthma kills.

and fuck ten homework seriously? ?? She can't breathe and your talking homework. call school on Monday.

good grief

HearTheThunderRoar · 20/02/2015 22:35

Knew I was going get flamed. Seriously do you think I want to let her suffer? Sadly I have had a lot of unexpected bills this month and I'm a single parent.

There's no cheaper option I'm afraid :(

glenthebattleostrich · 20/02/2015 22:35

Tell you what op. Have someone sit on your chest and press down so you can't breath properly then wonder if you are being unreasonable.

YABVVU

ragged · 20/02/2015 22:36

How bad is her cough right now? Can she sleep, is she wheezing when she breathes?

glenthebattleostrich · 20/02/2015 22:38

Excuse, excuse blah blah.

You need to be able to breathe, its tough shit if you've had some extra bills.

FFS eat pasta and baked beans for the rest of the month just get the poor kid her meds.

GoadyGeisha · 20/02/2015 22:38

You are going to get flamed to fuck LOL! (accurate though)

Take her to A&E and get her sorted out.

Penguinsaresmall · 20/02/2015 22:38

Are you serious? Fuck the 'unexpected bills', this is your dds life!

HearTheThunderRoar · 20/02/2015 22:38

Okay thank you for your advice, I did not realise dry coughing is struggling to breath. I will take her in tonight (midday Saturday here) so we won't have to wait in A&E for 2-3 hours.

glampinggaloshes · 20/02/2015 22:38

So am I a single parent. Dont give me that bullshit cos I'm not listening. Get off the pc and sort it out. It's not a cough you know.
