9 year old son hair clip

I'm either way by the way.
9 year old son discovered kirby grip to control fringe. He's growing his hair long. Looks gorgeous. Wants to wear it to school.
15 yo ds and my dp say no way.
Wwyd? It doesn't bother me in the slightest , but I've worked in classes of that age kids.....

Where I live (Australia) all the boys have long hair and it's over at least one eye, if not both.

Be very careful, he might catch the gay. It's well known that hair absorbs it ridiculously quickly

Have no idea what the issue is here. If he wants to wear a hair grip, let him. His choice. He can always take it out if he dislikes any reaction he gets at school.

My son has long hair, but it's all one length now so he just ties it back.

I don't think he bothered with hair grips as he just used to wear a style that didn't need them. There's no reason why your son shouldn't though, if his fringe is in the way, and he can take any comments he might get.

Long hair on boys is so common, there may well be no mention made of the hair grips.

I don't think the issue is 'catching the gay'

It is the mean reaction from less tolerant children that he might get at school.

Taking it out when at school is always an option, but then the damage is done. Bullies have already seen him wearing the clip.

In spite of this, I'd let him wear it. He sounds like a confident enough lad to not care about the reactions.

I knew I'd be misunderstood! I have no issue with the clip, it looks fab and serves a purpose! I have issue with mean kids calling him names when he's already a very shy quiet boy with a very small social group.
Fwiw as if i have to justify myself, gay brother and friends, total feminist. Just worried about my son!

At 9 he is old enough to understand his dad and brothers concerns. If he is confident enough not to care what his peers think then good on him!

It's up to him.

My son is wearing a rainbow clip with a rose in the middle right now! I made it, he liked it so he's wearing it.

Just ignore DH and ds and let ds9 wear it with pride!

I think you should explain to DS that kirby grips are normally used by girls, but if he wants to wear one anyway then he can. Just infer that his classmates may wonder why he is wearing one.

If he is secure in his friendships then it may surprise you how accepting other children can be. I personally think it's great that he's so open to trying what others would consider "girlish" accessories to try to control his hair and that today's ridiculously outdated concept of "male" and "female" hasn't gripped him yet.

DS1 is small, quiet, very pretty looking, has longish hair etc. DH was very anti him playing a girl (again) in the school play because of similar issues. Children can be cruel. I'd probably try to steer him away from the idea.

If he is adamant however then as others have said it might start a trend!

Sorry operaha my post was just meant to be lighthearted. I understand from your OP that you don't have a problem with it.

I guess I'm just thinking that as people we do need to strike out on our own a little, and do what we want to do because we like it or enjoy it, not just because we are following the expected route as a sheep. Embrace our individuality and everything. Although I have no experience with 9 year old children, so maybe it's too young to set their own standards/opinions?

I would also add that DS1 is 9 and in my experience some of the less well behaved boys at school are very quick to shout out "you're completely gay" (and far worse).

I would be the same. My DS struggle a little socially and can't always handle himself - he is very sensitive.

If you feel he equipped and strong enough to bounce back from any name calling support him.

Given how I ve said my DS I wouldnt let mine, I think school can be hard enough.

Have you talked to him about how other might see this? - without condemming his choice. Chat about how he would deal with any sort of reations to the clip - kind of helping him make an informed choice?

Find him some photos of David Beckham and other footballers wearing hair bands, etc, so if anyone challenges him he can say 'well it was alright for Beckham so it's good enough for me!'

I've let him. He could not understand a reason not to and said if anyone is mean he'll take it out but his fringe annoys him and he doesn't like gel.
I'm so nervous but i hope no-one says anything .

Alternatively, he'll get teased, take it off and that will be that.

Kids don't need kirby grips to shout gay, my 10 year old was made by me to use them as his fringe was getting in the way of him working and he would not get it cut.
Lasted 3 days not because of insults but because the things kept coming out so he has long hair and a manageable fringe.

The guy who cuts my hair has one of those Proudlock off of Made in Chelsea type buns on top of his head. I really like it! Fuck it if he's got the confidence to do it let him crack on. Who cares.
