AIBU?

my Nachos are not junk food

So yesterday I was talking to another mum, was saying what we were having for dinner and explained all the ingredients in my nachos and she replied "wow, you hit the junk food hard on a saturday night, I couldn't do that"

I thought my nachos were relatively healthy.

They contain:

Corn tortillas (just made of corn, salt and sunflower oil - no nasties and the corn counts as 1 of 5 a day) a great source of carbs
Fresh guacamole (avacadoes , lemon juice, coriander, garlic) 3 of your 5
Fresh salsa (tomatoes, onion and vinegar) 2 of 5 a day
Full fat sour creme and cheese, only a small amount but a great source of vitamin d, calcium and protein.

That's not junk right?

Doesn't sound like junk to me, sounds delicious. I love nachos.

Probably the cheese and sour cream that is making it sound like junk, a small amount is fine though.

It's not processed (assuming you make the tortilla chips yourself?)...but it's not healthy, and you definitely don't get 3 of your 5 a day from guacamole!

Having said that, what's life without a few treats? As long as you're all a healthy weight it sounds perfect for Saturday night.

Psst - corn is NOT 1 of your 5 a day. It is not a veg once it is dried/processed, it is a starch, a carb. It shouldn't really be counted as a veg even when fresh/wet either, it is like potatoes, sorry.

But yes, she was BU, my nachos are relatively healthy too Smile

I loooove nachos!

Nomama · 30/11/2014 09:32

And I'd say you'd get 1ish of your 5 a day from that as a meal. You'd probably get about one handful of avocado/tomato/onion per person.

Sounds lovely and she was very rude! My 'nachos' consist of tortilla crisps covered in grated cheese and melted in the microwave for 30 seconds, not a vegetable in sight (not even an avocado...)

I'm not a foody & couldn't care less if you do have a junk food meal. I guess your friend never has take-away pizza.

You make your own tortilla chips from corn tortillas? That's impressive. Doesn't the frying take ages and use a million paper towels?

Unless organic, the sunflower oil has trace solvents in it, but hard to avoid.

Don't think the corn (maize) counts as serving of F or Veg, though, and you've to consume A LOT each of coriander or lemon juice to make them count as a serving of F / Veg, too.

Bit junk but just because there's a vegetable ingredient does not mean that you are consuming a portion.

If it's homemade then yep, absolutely not junk.

Although I don't see how you would get 3 of 5 from guacamole Confused

It isn't junk, it's a "family night" type buffet meal, which is fine, when made yourself.

I'm from Native American background, we traditionally used Corn to make breads, Tortillas etc. it's much more healthy than wheat.

Corn isn't the equivalent to Potatoes. If your eating actual food, cooked from fresh ingredients, mostly, you don't have to stress about what you are putting in your body.

It depends on what your diet is like generally. When you come from a different culture, you instantly notice how much the average diet depends on Cereals, Bread and diary, as well as consuming Choc bars, Crisps etc.

Corn doesn't count towards your 5 a day, and how does the guacamole count as 3 of the 5? You need a lot of it to count as a portion.

Who care if it is healthy or not anyway? It's not like you eat nachos everyday.

I love nachos. We add veggie chilli (lots of kidney beans and mixed vegetables) and chopped red onions.

I'm guessing you mean corn tortilla chips? In which case, yes they are junk. They are basically crisps aren't they. We do nachos (with fresh guac, salsa, cream and cheese) occasionally but would totally acknowledge that they're not a health food. Loads of fat and salt.

That said, it was bloody rude of the other mum to criticise your choices like that!

Nachos, to most peoples standard (ie old El Paso kit and a shit load if cheese) would be junk food.
You've done pretty well to turn a treat meal into something healthier.

I simply must have nachos now! Thanks, OP! Grin

Who cares what this other mum thinks anyway!

The sensible people have said their bit...tortillas aren't 1 of your 5 and guacamole isn't 3 of your 5.

However, YABU. Simply for making nachos with no chilli on them.

Siennasun · 30/11/2014 09:53

Of course it's not junk. It's a balanced meal with complex carbs, fats, protein and veg (but nowhere near 6 portions!!).
People who are saying this isn't a healthy meal - seriously what is healthy??
Even if you'd said you were having chocolate and crisps for dinner your friend's comment would've still been smug. She sounds like a knob.

I agree with PP it was rude of her to say that to you. However I think your calculations on your 5 a day are a bit off.

Corn chips are basically crisps they absolutely do not count as one of your five a day. Unless you was each eating a full bowl full of guac and salsa each they won't really count either.

As someone else said that meal will probably contain 1 of your five a day at most.

But who cares? Not every meal needs to be healthy. I had a big fat kebab yesterday and a pizza earlier in the week. It doesn't really matter does it?

Mmm I bloody love nachos. Don't agree with your assessment of the number of portions of fruit and veg, however it's certainly not 'junk'. Really fancy some homemade guacamole now.

NeedABumChangeNotANameChange · 30/11/2014 09:56

I would say you maybe got one of your five a day. But even homemade tortillas are basically crisps.
