Home delivery to a 3rd floor flat with no lift

I'm starting to wonder whether I should be getting home deliveries or not. I live in a 3rd floor flat, I don't have a lift in my building. I normally get home deliveries from tescos every 2 weeks but today I had one and the delivery man was quite rude. I opened the door and I said hello and he said abruptly ''I will catch my breath first!'' he then slammed my bags down. I spoke to my mum about it and she said she wouldn't like to deliver here either. Every delivery driver makes a comment about the stairs so this isn't the first time. I understand its a lot of stairs but there getting paid to do it. What do you think aibu?

YANBU! It's their job. Just like posties have to manage stairs.

They shouldn't be commenting unless in a jokey way.

I used to do that and it was fine.

You could always give a tip if you're worried.

As long as you've mentioned it on the order (I think there's a question about access to property) then it is the company's decision to deliver to you and you would hope () they would consider the well being of their employees and only send fit ones where there are stairs...........I suspect tesco ABU not U....

Is it marked on your delivery details that you're 3rd floor with no lift (mine is marked ground/first). If so then they know and have no right to be unpleasant about it. A jokey comment possibly, because they're only human, I've had some sigh a bit when they've climbed my 1 flight of stairs, but not rudeness. I'd be tempted to ring and complain. The call centre people are very good.

We're in a second floor flat and the Tesco drivers always bring stuff up to our kitchen. You have to write it on the delivery instructions bit I think because I imagine not all drivers are able to carry heavy stuff up three flights of stairs several times over.

We've never had a problem and our drivers have always been polite and willing to bring stuff up for us. Not an enviable job but it is what they're being paid to do.

When we lived on the third floor we would get them to stop at the bottom and DH and I would run the groceries up.

We've got a lift that is pretty much hidden, so unless you know it's there you won't find it. I had plenty of deliveries brought up on the stairs to the third floor, the delivery people may make a joke about it but I've never had rude comments.

I live on the first floor and I expect Tesco to carry the stuff up to my kitchen. I've never had a problem. I have been my neighbours accepting delivery to the door at ground level but more fool them. I want my delivery in my kitchen.

Rude bugger. Third floor is hardly the 27th floor of a tower block.

I live on the third floor too, get stuff delivered all the time and have never had anyone complaining. I do tip the grocery guy as sometimes he has to park waaaaay down the street and then cart the stuff upstairs too. And does it with a smile.

No way am I going downstairs to collect things when I've paid for a delivery.

Yab a bit U...my last place was 2nd floor, I usually met them halfway and always gave a tip. Yes they are paid to deliver but when there are a lot of stairs it makes their job more difficult.

The whole point of deliveries is that some people, myself included, get them because we're not physically capable of walking round a shop or carrying the food home. I can usually carry it from hall to kitchen, and am happy to when i can, but the idea is they offer a service to deliver your shopping to your door, or kitchen if you wish. You can't be said to be being unreasonable for using, and paying for, a service when Tesco are happy to accept your order knowing the details of where you live. It's down to Tesco to give their employees the right training and equipment and ensuring the ones they send to you are physically capable of getting your shopping up the stairs.

That's my view anyway - if they refused to deliver to my 1st floor flat, without a lift, I'd be in trouble.

The thing is I have 3 children, one being a 6 month old baby who I don't like leaving upstairs alone. The whole point of me getting home delivery was because I couldn't manage the stairs plus a baby in a buggy anymore, I sort of seen it as there getting paid for it and it's not a regular thing as I only order every two weeks.

I'm actually surprised no one else has had comments made?! I once order a takeaway and the driver said I needed to give him a tip for brining it up the stairs! I don't normally have cash in my house and paid by card, he looked very annoyed and said I owed him next time but I just never ordered from them again.

He was damn rude. If he can't handle stairs he should not be in the job. His behavior was most unprofessional. I trust you are going to put in a complaint.

I agree with the other comments here - the shop has a duty to fulfill its obligations of customer service. If anyone is rude enough to complain, or even demand a tip, then shop elsewhere. Why do companies provide this service then complain because every house is not laid with rose petals and a white picket fence straight to the door!

You don't HAVE to tip anyone, this is not America, I just meant if you felt like you wanted to give something extra, it might be well received. When tesco home delivery was new I lived on the third floor too and never had a comment apart from a jokey one about keeping them fit.

When I lived on the top floor I'd get the odd comment from delivery drivers about how high up we were.

I'd say, 'yes I know that's why I get my shopping delivered.'

I'm second floor without a lift (top floor conversion.) I sometimes feel a bit bad about the Ocado delivery but they've never complained. I did feel very bad about the elderly Jehovah's witnesses I turned away the other day - they were knackered by the time they got to my door. I did say sorry for the stairs......

I have friends who live up a lane off a road. For tesco deliveries, the driver has to park as close as possible,load everything up lock up the van and hoik it a good 50 metres up a path.this is exactly why they have it delivered

Clicked on this thread thinking it was about home confinement. Had to giggle. Most delivery men would not entertain some of the situations in which I have found myself. Walking half a mile up a farm track in the snow in February; fending off cats trying to make off with afterbirth; a Yurt; a Traveller site...the list goes on but all lovely deliveries and lovely babies. Sorry for hijacking the thread

I think you're being a bit harsh OP. Yes its his job, but if you're on the 3rd floor that could be six flights of stairs ( or three long flights). Yes he's getting paid, but he's still a human being and working extra hard to get your shopping to you.

It probably came as a horrible surprise to him that you were on the 3rd floor with no lift. Nobody expects a thank you card but a bit of empathy wouldn't hurt!

I deliver all sorts of furniture and white goods to all sorts of property I might joke about stairs with a customer but at the end of the day for every nasty trip upstairs there is
Two easy jobs where I can virtually park at the front door

I've had a tesco delivery man who complained when I asked him to take my shopping into the kitchen. Apparently he had a bad back so refused and left my shopping at the front door. I also had a bad back, done while giving birth, which was why I'd booked the shopping to be delivered. I complained. If the company say they deliver shopping to your kitchen and I would like my shopping delivered to my kitchen, that's where they can put it. It's hard work, but going up stairs is part of the job. I'd expect a jokey comment after going up three flights of stairs with a families weekly shop but not a serious one.

Hmm I dunno I carry my double buggy up six flights of stairs also done it straight after a csection I just got on with it, so I wouldn't expect a man to find it such a difficult task especially whilst getting paid.
