AIBU?

Home delivery to a 3rd floor flat with no lift

I'm starting to wonder whether I should be getting home deliveries or not. I live in a 3rd floor flat, I don't have a lift in my building. I normally get home deliveries from tescos every 2 weeks but today I had one and the delivery man was quite rude. I opened the door and I said hello and he said abruptly ''I will catch my breath first!'' he then slammed my bags down. I spoke to my mum about it and she said she wouldn't like to deliver here either. Every delivery driver makes a comment about the stairs so this isn't the first time. I understand its a lot of stairs but there getting paid to do it. What do you think aibu?

Thought most supermarkets only guarantee to take your shopping up one flight of stairs?

Anyway, I can see it both sides. Shit for the delivery person but shit for you too OP.

We are on the 2nd floor but have a lift. Delivery people always look thrilled with the lift situation and at shally to wheel the slabs into the kitchen.

3 flights of stairs? Oh the poor wee lambs.

If they can't handle the physical requirements, it's time to get a new job.

It's a delivery service...why pay for a delivery service and do the pain in the arse bit yourself? I use Tesco delivery and they're usually lovely but I do occasionally get someone who's obviously had a bad day. I just brush it off normally. If they crossed the line into outright rude, I'd complain. And possibly give them an earful at the door.

I've found Tesco complain about parking and coming up one flight of stairs. Ocado never, ever do.

That's exactly it, there is no point in me getting a delivery if I'm expected to carry the bag up the stairs anyway.

Tesco delivered to our second floor flat with no lift and none of the delivery people ever complained. But we clearly stated it in the delivery notes... Sainsbos on the other hand, won't go more than one flight of stairs without a lift - never had them deliver again. OP I would complain (you'll probably get a voucher!)

I don't think you're allowed to tip tesco drivers. I did try a couple of years ago when we waded through 250m of waist deep snow to get my essentials to the door but he still said no. TBH have you considered smaller less frequent orders, I tend to place two orders a week, as I cba popping out for milk/ bread during the week. Means I rarely have more than 2 or 3 crates unless nappies/ wipes are on special. Also if you order your shopping without bags they're fairly obligated to bring them into the kitchen to unpack the crates.

I used to live on the fourth floor with no lifts, the delivery people never said anything. I didn't have a car so always got online shopping. I lived in London so it's hardly unexpected that lots of people live in flats.

I live on 4th floor with no stairs, I stopped using tesco after one driver refused to carry stuff up and was very rude, i get that its pain for them I know its hard work thats why I order it online, but that's what I pay for, I always mentioned it in the special delivery instructions so was not a surprise. I get all sorts of problems getting household good delivered. John lewis and argos are the only lot to have not complained. I complained to tesco after I had to carry up the last delivery and did get a refund of delivery cost and voucher as goodwill.

Oh thank goodness someone else has dealt with rude people was starting to think it was just me then! Getting more frequent shopping to spread it out is a good idea I never thought of that. In the 8 months I've been doing it I have never had the same delivery driver I've noticed, so it's not like it's the same person doing it all the time either.

Tip them if you like and be genuinely apologetic about the stairs as I'm sure you already are.
It's their job and they're being paid, so I wouldn't worry too much.

They should count their lucky stars! I'm on the 13th floor, ordered a 3 seater sofa, measured the lift and honestly thought it would fit. It didn't and the poor guys had to carry it up 13 flights of stairs! Felt very guilty, gave massive tip but it is part of their job and we were very clear at the time of ordering. Hazard of the job I suppose!

Not in the slightest, but she is BU for not having any sympathy for a man who has just lugged her stuff up several flights of stairs and was too knackered to smile and say "here's your shopping madame". If she complains about him too that would just be mean.

I'm on the third floor with no lift too and have never had a complaint from tescos food deliveries. Only complaint was from the tesco direct people, who were delivering a flat-packed double bed, and when they had finished lugging it up the stairs were not impressed that I wouldn't let them bring it in - all my furniture is beech and I had ordered a beech bed and the huge box they had lugged up the stairs clearly said Mahogony on it. After much huffing and puffing they agreed to take it back. I did make them both a cup of tea first though.

Where abouts are you OP. Dp works at a tesco online delivery warehouse and said that they have to take shopping to the third floor. They can refuse to take it above that with no lift he never has refused though.

No I don't have sympathy tbh, I've done it for long enough myself and as I said I've never had the same delivery guy so not like he's always doing it. I'm in London.

When I saw an ad for Asda delivery drivers and saw how low the pay is, I knew that the drivers don't do it as a much longed for career choice. I just think you should cut them a bit of slack that's all. They are ordinary people doing a physical job.

I stopped using Tesco delivery service because of how frequently the drivers were rude about having to come up the stairs.

Ocado on the other hand, unfailingly polite. I have even offered to help carry a few bags up (sometimes the downstairs door sticks and I can't just buzz them in as I usually do, so need to go down and open the door) and they always refuse and carry it up themselves.
