To still be unnerved by tv programmes from childhood? (Light hearted)

For years I have had a vague recollection of a chilling ghost story about a young girl transported back to Victorian times when she looks in a mirror. I have just remembered it was called "Come Back Lucy" & searched online for details... And I am freaked out all over again, despite being 43!

I love a good ghost story but I can't believe that was considered ok for me to watch. I must have only been 7 or 8 when it was shown.

Does anyone else recall it?

Also scared witless of what I think was The Singing Ringing Tree - the weird dwarf making thorn hedges spring up everywhere.

I am the same age as you OP and Come Back Lucy still freaks me, even with the terrible CGI in the opening titles. It was an excellent story but it is very creepy.

I'd forgotten about that! I have the book too. Charlotte Sometimes was another odd one...

Charlotte Sometimes; is that the one about the girl at a boarding school who transports into a war time child and nearly gets stuck in the past?

I also remember this creepy film with Tinker from LoveJoy and some kids and a shed and some sort of disaster (nuclear?). That scared me too. Or maybe I dreamt it!

The boy from space, which was on some kind of schools programme (words and pictures maybe?). Completely freaked me out for a long time. Dare not Google it..

Oh I remember watching that at school! Yes it was a bit freaky! The alien boy had this very bleached blond hair, right? And the girl, one of the human children who befriended him, was played by Sylvestra le Touzel who still pops up on TV all the time to this day (last time I saw her, she was playing an OFSTED inspector in Big School with Catherine Tate, Frances de la Tour and David Walliams.) Think so anyway.

I remember a show about a child who is very ill and stuck in bed and bored he draws pictures of a house and in one there's a little face at the window. The child ends up in the house and meets the other little child and the house is being surrounded/attacked by these shadowy creatures. Many years later I went to visit Avebury Circle and it was a misty day, and frankly the stones looked so much like these creatures I was actually terrified.

Why is it that in Britain, scaring the bejesus out of kids is considered a good thing? I love it when DC has to hide behind behind cushions watching Doctor Who!

Yes that was a good one. I remember it being a girl who draws the pictures and it's based on the book 'Marianne Dreams' by Catherine Storr. (Although the TV show might have had a different title maybe). The scary stones were proper creepy.

I remember the book, 'The Owl Service' about the girl that was ill in bed and liked to draw owls then one of them came to life. Or something like that.

I didn't like Captain Scarlett. I still don't.

I was going to say 'Children Of The Stones' but I was beaten to it..I know it's on youtube but I can't bring myself to even try watching it again

We watched The Boy From Space at school too. Frightened the life out of me! I still vividly remember the alien man who was possibly the creepiest looking thing ever. Still can't believe it was a made for schools type of programme.

We also had to watch one about a big old haunted house. Can't for the life I me think what that was called.

The Moomins scared the hell out of me. Probably still would.

Thanks for that Nadia! Going to go look it up now. I am fairly sure it was the boy in the drawing too. I don't remember how it ends! Will look it up. Weird how I've had a fear of stones ever since. I can tell you that the Blink episode in Doctor Who totally terrified the pants off me!

The music on Captain Scarlett was a bit scary -boom boom boom ba boo boo boom

The old Thomas the tank engine with the weird moving eyes used to worry me, now DS watches it, and I'm still a bit

The Enchanted Garden (?) where the dinosaur statues came to life? But the freaky FREAKY thing was these sort of large mannequin things coming to life and closing down on them. Horrendous.

The walls in the rubbish chute closing in on Star Wars still gives me the heebie jeebies.

And don't get me started on Dr Who. There were some aliens with translucent skulls so you could see their pulsing veins and to this day I still can't eat blue cheese or raspberry ripple ice cream as a result!!!

Ghost in the water - I can't remember what happened in it but remember watching it then me and my sister being required to sleep in a strange house at some kind of New Year's Eve party that my parents were at and we were both just terrified.

I loved Moondial! There were some creepy bits though.

The worst programme for me was The Changes. Weird noises started coming from machines and pylons. Technology is destroying people. The main character is a gir called Nicki.

I used to watch it when I came home from school, I was about 9. Truly scary!

Andy Pandy made me cry.....I hated the songs. All plinky plonky and in a minor key
And Andy Pandy himself reminds me now of Penny wise the Clown..

Through The Dragons Eye was truly terrifying, still puts the wind up me!
