Seriously, where are all my socks going?

It's getting so that I am losing at least one sock per wash load now. I think there MUST be a gremlin sitting behind my washing machine eating odd socks. It is so maddening

Washing machines turn socks into dust bunnies that they mysteriously inject under the bed while you are not looking. Occasionally just to mix things up odd socks turn into spiders instead.

Wishtoremainunknown · 18/11/2014 17:20

If you find out I will join you in going to retrieve all my lost socks. I think they ve formed a cult somewhere.

It's not a gremlin.

Adventerous socks get transported to Poly Island through a magic portal in the washing machines.

After travelling for months on end they return via another black hole under the bed, worn out and exhausted...just as you've given up hope of ever seeing it again and threw away his parter. The Adventerous sock wants to go back to the drawer and party with the other socks and amuse the underworld garments of his adventures..but instead, spends the rest of his days crumpled in the back corner of the drawers, trying to figure out a way to jump into the dark depths of the back of the unit, morning the loss of his life partner.

NakedFamilyFightClub · 18/11/2014 17:24

I caught my tumbledrier eating a tea towel the other day, it was half gone under the seal when I pulled the washing out. I'm tempted to get my tin opener out and see if it has a collection of socks too. I bet it does.

hackmum · 18/11/2014 17:26

Only one sock per load? I have a washing basket full of odd socks. Every week I hope that the pairs will mysteriously emerge, but they never do.

x2boys · 18/11/2014 17:30

I don't know but I have the same problem I buy everyone black socks and still can't find a matching pair ds1 more worryingly lost a school shoe last week I have looked everywhere I had to buy him a new pair and we don't live in a particularly big house just a three bed semi,,!

spamanderson · 18/11/2014 17:32

Have you noticed a black labrador lurking around your house? If so, that would be my dog, his particular favourite meal is a sock, not chewed, just delicately swallowed - picture lady and the tramp sucking down spaghetti - he's swallowed at least 50 of them that we know of. No vet visits as yet, luckily he appears to have iron guts.. I have av arrive bag full of lonely sucks I darent throw away JUST INCASE their partner magically appears somewhere or we spot it in a partly digested state in the garden

Loumish · 18/11/2014 17:37

I deliberately buy coloured, patterned socks and still can't find their partners.
Pretty sure I would have noticed the dog - at least you have an explanation

Have they eloped with mine?
I also have a big odd sock basket which I'm reluctant to bin incase missing sock appears, possibly a sock exchange is occurring as in my odd sock pile are loads of black ones which do not actually go together. Part of me wants to just pair them up anyway no one will know... Except I will know and it will annoy me and the other one might turn up!! I may be overthinking this some what...

HereBeHubbubs · 18/11/2014 17:47

They slip behind the metal drum.

Loumish · 18/11/2014 18:11

Is that in the wAshing machine or tumble dryer?
There must be a charity collecting odd socks?

Nocturne123 · 18/11/2014 18:15

I haven't had matching socks in years!! My daughter is now following in my footsteps ( my fault as she's 18months) . I am genuinely thinking of buying a whole new load of one colour socks

Purplefrogshoes · 18/11/2014 18:46

My black lab eats mine too but strangely he doesn't touch socks belonging to dh. I just wear odd ones

redexpat · 18/11/2014 19:40
  1. Are you a character in Blackadder III?
  1. A delicates bag will solve this situation.
3bunnies · 18/11/2014 19:46

They are all down the side of dd2's bed. Or at least that is where all of ours end up. For school all dc wear the same size, colour and make of socks so if one is lost another one takes it's place. For other socks I always buy multiple packs so if one is lost and one has a hole in it I still have a pair of socks left!

HairStylistToBoris · 18/11/2014 19:48

My DH has the opposite problem, I swear his socks multiply. Goodness knows how but there are always loads scattered round the house in the bizarrest of places.

x2boys · 18/11/2014 19:53

Now you see nocturne I had that cunning plan to just buy black socks but I have my dh ,myself an eight year old and a four year old alm with black.socks can I find two socks that are the same size for the same feet ?can.I hell!

GooseRoasties · 18/11/2014 19:53

I've got to the stage where everyone in the house has the same exact socks x50 but a diff colour so they can be given out evenly. I have navy my dp has white and ds has black

Wynona · 18/11/2014 20:02

Happiness is buying 20 pairs of identical black socks so it doesn't matter how many times the sock monster tries to nibble the socks, they always match up. Simple.

BadLad · 18/11/2014 22:05

Even that doesn't work for me. Immigrants always get in and spoil things. My stockdraw is in dire need of its own version of the UKIP.

BadLad · 18/11/2014 22:06

Sock drawer

gamerchick · 18/11/2014 22:08

They go behind the drum in driers.. There will be an escape hatch in a washer as well judging by all the crap that collects in the join under the sink.

TyneTeas · 18/11/2014 22:09

This is where they all go : )

Mine disappear. I keep the odd sock for years, and then, when I crack and use it for finger puppet/chuck it in the bin - bingo! the other one comes back. Grr. On a more helpful note - we have a hot water heater in a cupboard upstairs with an airing cupboard. When the service was due last year, frantically emptied it all ( always told off for no air flow!) I found 3 odd socks behind the back of the heater....
