Car insurance renewal insult

I don't think I'm being unreasonable and if I am I don 't care I am outraged.
I renewed my car insurance today because finally I managed to get a new car.I have used the same nodding dog company for years.Im now almost divorced so requested as an afterthought that my stbexh was removed as a named driver from my policy.They wanted to charge me an additional sixty odd quid for the pleasure.Not in admin but because as a single woman I am considered to be more risky than a married one!
Bloody cheek clearly as a married woman I'm less likely to have an accident than as a single one.How can this be justified.I have logged complaint etc but still feel disappointed in the company for having such outdated beliefs.

Insurance companies work on statistics. It's nothing personal. Statistically, people who are married have less accidents than those who are single. My car insurance premium increased when I got divorced. As did the premium of my ex husband.

Try putting someone you trust on your insurance, I was told having another driver decreases the premium.

I was a bit miffed that as a SAHM, I'm more of a risk than I was as a bank manager. Just statistics though, I wasn't offended. Just miffed.

I have my Dad on my insurance and it was £80 cheaper.

My Dad has my Mum on his insurance (she has a provisional licence) and it was £30 cheaper - seems mad really.

I'm considering adding my mum to my insurance in Jan to see if it comes down.

Bear in mind that because of that preposterous decision of the European Court of Human Justice they can no longer consider the actuarial differences between men and women as drivers - but they can consider the actuarial differences between married, single and divorced people. Yep, until recently DP hadn't driven since he passed his test aged 18, yet he's been on my insurance policy for years and years as it makes it cheaper for me. It's ridiculous I agree.

Another thing that annoys me is that car insurance is more expensive if you are unemployed than if you are using your car to commute to work in the rush hour every day.

I their defence, I separated from my ex two years ago, having had one accident in 14 years. I've had two this year alone . I don't know if there is something in it, perhaps it's because the pressure of him going ballistic if I did have a prang was enough to make me more careful, or perhaps because I'm too deliriously happy these days to care, but it could be that having another person responsible for the vehicle makes you take more care?

I'm with Directline, mine also would go up by about £30 removing my XH. I'm old, years of NCB, he had worse record... However, they said they have a policy of not increasing in those circumstances. I've been with them 10 years and have several times been impressed with things like that.

I could imagine that married men are statistically less likely to have accidents than single men. I doubt that the same is true of women but they perhaps aren't allowed to treat women any differently to men.

Exactly Whatever5. Women used to pay for less for car insurance and life insurance and men used to pay less for annuities - but the European Court of Justice held that that was a breach of one of the equal treatment directives. Prime Euro-bollocks!

Try Admiral, they were much cheaper for us than anyone else. We were with DirectLine & they must have decided they didn't want us as customers, their prices were so high.

It's always been like this, I had the same when I split with exDP 20 years ago. Definitely worth shopping around every year and not just renewing with the same company.

Would you not be better to keep him on just incase there was, say, an emergency and you needed him to drive the car.....

My insurance is cheaper with DH on it, and vice versa. Its just numbers.

Ours was cheaper with FIL on it. He was a extremely cautious driver and drove our car I think once. We left him on until the poor man died.

I worked on data modelling a (very) long time ago, and they quite often select a batch of accounts to test to destruction. So they raise the price an amount to try and establish the level at which they can raise premiums and still retain custom. They're aware that most will leave but losing 100+ accounts to establish how much you can get away with raising the prices on tens if not hundreds of thousands is good value.

You've been caught out a different way this time, but it's just an example of how impersonally companies work with data - there is no moral agenda you are totally just a number to them.

As said, insurance goes on statistics, and married people are shown to have less accidents hence single people pay higher premiums. You also gain from this though as women have less accidents than men hence lower premiums than men. You can't have it both ways. Were we to stop all this statistic stuff to stop offending drivers egos and go for an all out one rule for everyone stance, the premiums will only go one way.... and it won't be down!!

Dunkling, I thought the law changed on that though? Women have fewer accidents and so premiums used to be cheaper but now the law says we can't be charged less (or men more) for that reason alone. That's why Drive Like a Girl now have those gadgets that monitor your driving, so that men and women who drive "like women" can get the cheaper insurance.

It might be too late now, but instead of renewing with the old company, get a few more quotes.

The comparison sites like to harvest your contact details so they can sell you to spammers, and also guide you towards companies that pay them commission. Try contacting a few insurers or their websites direct. I am now with Liverpool Victoria because they were the best price among the Which Best Buys I tried.

Depending on their customer mix, companies may have good prices for one sort of customer or car, and not good for another.
